Review: After breaking through with some powerful EPs on Night Slugs, Girl Unit is back to continue what he started. Interestingly, the grimey element in his earlier output has been replaced by a screamingly loud electro influence, positioned in the kind of snappy funk favoured by EDMX and his Breakin Records posse. From "Ensemble (Club Mix)" to "Plaza", the sharp edges of the synth work chafe against crisp drum machine workouts, leaving six cold crush bangers in their wake. It's something of a departure for Girl Unit, but he's absolutely nailed the target sound with tracks that will absolutely tear up the dance.

Review: The unwritten rule with any release from the Minimal Wave camp is that the illuminating nature of the music and the delightful way it's presented will almost always be matched by the story behind it - something that is undeniably true of their latest release, a collection of tracks from mid 80s UK synth act Hard Corps. Fronted by towering vocalist Regine Fetet, the band surfaced in 1984 with the two track single Dirty (the title track is included here) gained the studious attentions of John Peel (RIP) before signing with a major label and granted the chance to work with two 80s production titans in Martin Rushent and Daniel Miller. Hard Corps disbanded in 1989, having only released the one single Je Suis Passee amidst malcontent at their lack of support from Polydor. Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt collates six tracks from the Hard Corps canon, with the aforementioned "hits" accompanied by unheard archival material that will pique the fancy of any self regarding Minimal Wave fan.

Review: Depending on your predilection, the name Venetian Snares will either induce terror or delight. Aaron Funk's music has largely erred towards the aggressive and intense, but those fortunate enough to stumble upon his Last Step project have been privy to a broader tapestry of moods that eschew manic breakcore in favour of low-slung acidic grooves. This latest album, Sleep, is reportedly the result of Funk working on the fringes of his own consciousness at the time when all he really wants to do is have a kip. Stylistically, the Last Step approach is one of vintage brain dance; warm analogue synths give off mournful and intricate melodies, while lashings of expressive acid complement them. The beats are all decidedly vintage too, and largely in a laconic house remit, although to tag this as house music seems a bit of a stretch. Even in the depths of his most malevolent music, it's hard to deny the gift the man has for staggering complexities. Sleep is a shining exponent of that.

Review: Rising star of the sqweee scene Ostridge Forrester delivers his debut release for Finnish label Massy and this excellent four track EP. "Ssmokin" is based around off-kilter broken stabs with beats that audibly squirm within, whilst "Intoxicated Dancing" is as giddy as its name suggests, practically shimmering. "Funksta Blues" meanwhile is a delicious slice of 80s robofunk filled with gravelly claps and glittering metallic textures. Closer "Convertibles, Palmtrees and Ladieez" is a more sedate end, focusing on deep, square bass tones and ascending melodies that might be a little more aligned than the other tracks but no less full of bump. Awesome stuff.

Review: Despite a long and fruitful career, there's been little for fans of Justin Robertson to get excited about lately. It turns out that this is down to the time he's been spending in the studio, adding finishing touches to the debut EP from his new alias, Deadstock 33s. Stranger is an excellent EP, featuring tracks that mine many of Robertson's influences. There's the warped, acid-laden vintage techno pomp of "Stranger" - all analogue drums, weird noises and original Bugged Out strut - and "The Sound Face & Mind", a curious but rather brilliant fusion of '80s electro rhythms and cascading synths. For the most part the remixes are great, too, with Eskimo Twins 303-attack and Daniel Avery's deep electro standing out.
