Review:
Joey Negro's Z Records have a remarkable knack for knocking out vintage compilation after vintage compilation. Here though, they've really discovered a rare niche of unmined gold courtesy of Nuphonic's David Hill who acts as selector. As Hill explains "gospel music has often followed trends in secular music" and this album captures 24 attempts of gospel getting on the disco and boogie trains. Highlights include the hiNRG longing of "I Need You", the electro-soul of "Love Is The Message" and the piano & strings frenzy of "Awake O Zion".

Review:
Now what is not to like about a brass band rendering of Toto's evergreen schmaltz-fest "Africa"? Hackney Colliery Band have individually played with Jarvis Cocker, The Bollywood Brass Band and Porpoise Corpus but together they've got a knack for covering classics like MJ's "Human Nature" or ODB's "Got Your Money" so well that you'll start thinking all pop tunes would benefit from extra sousaphone after a while.

Review:
With their audacious and unlikely cover versions, bouncing energy and hipster-ish following, Hackney Colliery Band come across as the tongue-in-cheek clowns of the WahWah 45s roster - a post-modern musical joke that works. This may seem a little harsh, but it's not meant to be; musically, they rarely put a foot wrong. Here, they show their playful side once more by offering a rousing brass band medley of three Prodigy rave classics. It's as floor-friendly and exuberant as usual, dropping the tempo for "Out of Space" before raising the roof with those familiar "No Good" riffs. Flip for "Owl Sanctuary", a more earnest number that recalls the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at their best.

Review:
The alter ego of funk connoisseurs Aldo Vanucci and Dave Remix, Hardly Subtle drop their second EP of mash-ups and funk/hip hop/breaks treats - with a beefed-up and looped take on a stirring soul gem making up "When The Levels Break" and LL Cool J going up against Banbarra's timeless classic "Shack Up" on "Mama Said Funk You Out". Elsewhere, Pharaoh Monche goes toe-to-toe with Joe Cocker on the ace "Hands Up Woman" while Snoop gets a Zapp rerub on "Pop Lock".

Review:
A full-length album from modern soul singer Hawa, who first came on our radar after the effortlessly funky single "The Best Is Yet To Come" (done in collaboration with Mr President). Here, all manner of rootsy and organic funk styles are out in force: the Motown-ish swing of "I Was Born To Love" for example, the slow skank of the title tune and "Never Give Up", and the slo-mo fusion of "Trickery Shit" all demonstrate Hawa's dynamism, while the excellent Northern Soul swagger of "Coming Back" has "single" written all over it.

Review:
After a while away from the Timewarp label, Headson Groove returns with a bevy of sophisticated nu-disco winners. The funky '80s neon shimmy of "In a Funky Space", the brass-dominated "You Got To Believe" and the midtempo French electro stabs of "Move It" are all well worth checking out if hot new disco is your thing, while remixes from Basement Freaks and the Timewarp team add a more Balearic tinge.
