Review:
Those of you out there who dig eclectic retro jazz outfit, The Unity Sextet, will already be familiar with their keyboard whizz, Fat Thumbs Ronnie. Having recently made a big splash with his day job band, Ronnie now turns his er, fat thumbs, to his own debut solo effort. Once again recruiting producer Lack Of Afro, the Bristolian ivory tinkler has delivered an accomplished 11-track set that touches on breezy jazz ("A Tenuous Link"), 60s retro ("The Playhouse") and laid-back funk ("Building Bridges").

Review:
The Killer Funk label changes tack here, eschewing raw soul and heavy funk for two distinct afro-tinged cuts. As it happens, this isn't a totally new development - both of these tracks originally saw the light of day a few years back - but it's still a refreshing change. "Water Get No Enemy" from the amusingly named Fella Cutie (well, we chuckled) is, unsurprisingly, a Fela Kuti-ish chunk of bumpin' Afrobeat, as authentic as they come (it is, we think, actually a tight re-edit). On the flip, the Killer Funk latin Allstars join forces with Kan Dee Doh for a track that effortlessly blurs the boundaries between Afrobeat, Latin and good old US heavy funk - all spiraling horns, heavy grooves and Cuban percussion.

Born to Eritrean revolutionists, Fetsum embarked on a nomadic existence before settling in Italy where he forged his nascent musical roots. His subsequent exposure to an even bigger variety of international music has resulted in his recent debut album, "The Colour Of Love". This lead track from the LP is a jaunty number that combines his upbeat, melodic sensibilities with plenty of world music flavours.

Review:
Flatpocket are a duo from Cologne who are hoping that this here debut album (on the esteemed Melting Pot label) will help make those pockets that bit fatter. Boasting a mighty 19 tracks, Twit One and Lazy Jones explore a variety of influences all connected by some impressive hazy hip-hop beats. Highlights include the 60s soundtrackish "Flatpocket Theme", the swing-hop of "Nomoneynohoney", the jazzy, mellow Sunday vibes of "Sofortrente" and the retro bossa nova of "Redebedarf".

Review:
Two Sydney-based funk and disco heads, Jack Priest and Chris Soulos, make up Flatwound. who've play a blinder on this latest single from Timewarp. A true must-have for nu-disco and funky house fans, "Again" is a perfectly structured mix of driving funk guitars, softly softly house drums, filter vocals and an addictive flute 'n' synth line reminiscent of the great Roy Ayres. Valique's remix is just as arresting, crafting a huge build out of the parts, while Flatwound shine again on the beautifully dubby and Balearic slo-mo disco of "Kick Junior".
