Almost 35 years since Floyd Lawson released his first record, on Motown no less, Record Kicks have corralled him back into the studio for these two new super-funky tunes, led by the rollicking good times of "Roof Top Sugar". Bearing all the hallmarks of an old-cat and not a new-jack, Lawson's delivery is casual and assured as he urges everyone to get on the rooftop, over a raw, Brainfreeze-esque drum break.

Funky moombahton klaxon! Lucano gets his hands on a delightful heel-kicking Cuban sample and proceeds to get his freak on with a tight percussive drum pattern, rainbows of silly bleeps and even a few horns and whistles. In a word: lively. The remixes are all rather smart, too. Saur goes for a full front Favela smasher, Ckrono & Slesh opt for a half step vibe, Milangeles goes for a proper slo-mo stomp and Arge Numa Crew take the energy levels to maximum. If you happen to be playing at any carnivals this summer this is a must!

Review:
It's been three years since Jamie Lidell's last full-length, Compass, and in that time he seems to have rediscovered his early passion for distorted electrofunk. Like the track that launched his career, Super_Collider's 1997 machine-funk masterpiece "Darn Cold Way O'Lovin", Jamie Lidell delivers a hard-edged contemporary take on P-Funk that allows his soaring soul vocals to take centre stage. There are audible nods to masters of the genre - Roger Troutman on the talkbox-endowed "Do Yourself A Favour", Prince on "I'm Selfish", George Clinton on the filthy synth-funk of "Why_Ya_Why" - and production that harks back to the days before his pop breakthrough, Multiply. It's not exactly a return to form - he's not released a duff album yet - but it's certainly a riotously enjoyable set.

Review:
Two members of excellent Latin funk band Los Charly's Orchestra, namely Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel, get it together on this upfront Northern Soul smash featuring the husky ones of Cathy Edgar. Built around raw beats, jazzy piano riffs and steadily-building brass, they nail the spirits of Lyn Collins, Vicki Anderson and the wider JB's family here perfectly for this summery soul stomper that comes with a handy instrumental and an epic six minute extended version.

Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel team up for this killer jam on Imagenes. "Funk Supreme" instantly evokes the memory of Herbia Hancock's finest work, with swirling organ stabs, layered percussion and a nice funk'd up bassline. The 'heavy breaks club mix' of the same track is the Juno favourite, with the speaker cone worrying drum break brought to the fore in wonderful fashion!

A producer who's consistently been able to combine the modern with the old, Lack of Afro tees up his forthcoming album This Time with this new single featuring singer/songwriter Wayne Gidden on vocals. In a slow, soulful Al Green-mould, "A Time For" is a beautifully mellow mix of Bill Withers, Gil Scott-Heron and 70s Sly Stone, while on the B-Side, "Numero Seenko" picks up the pace with a big-beat/Northern Soul stomper featuring nicely ebullient drums, Hammond organ and dubbed-out vocal samples.

Review:
The second single from Lack of Afro's latest album This Time sees singer Jake Morley provide a timeless vocal over a sequenced Latin-jazz beat, replete with vibraphones, epic piano lines and Santana-esque percussion on "Holding My Breath". The smooth party vibes roll right into the carnivalesque skank of instrumental b-side "Broken Samba" - a great excuse for LOA to show off his skilled guitar playing - while an instrumental version of album track "What The Hell" shows off his nu-funk production skills to the max.
