Review:
Joey Negro focuses entirely on the Brit Funk movement of the 1970s and 80s on his latest mix compilation. The twenty-three tracks provide an extensive history on the genre and contain a number of extremely rare and very sought after crate digging collectables. Avoiding the huge hits of the scene which appear on retrospectives the world over, Negro unleashes a host of the genre's underground club hits that remained only on the local scene, many of which were re-edited by Negro exclusively for this compilation. Do not miss this.

Rex Riddem and Mustafa Akbar - aka Nappy Riddem - drop this killer 10-track set entitled One World Sovereignty on Washington based funk 'n breaks label Fort Knox. As with the duo's previous outings on Fort Knox, there's an insouciant blend of breaks, funk, hip-hop and smooth soul on offer. There are highlights aplenty, including the sultry "Angle It", dubby b-boy riddim "Ease Up", reggae-influenced "DTA", the killer title track and funk-fuelled "Shango".

Review:
Nappy, or Diaper as he's not known in the US, has allowed AAA access to his album for a series of remix fix-ups due over the coming months. Will they stand up to the Bootsy-level of bodacious funkatude shown by Mr Riddem himself? It's looking promising; Fort Knox Five take the soul stirring sizzles of "Devil Needs A Bodyguard" and drive them so deep into P-funk town they eat their own A-Zs. Basement Freaks continues his purple party patch with a hip-swinging dancehall take on "Ease Up", while Omegaman gives "Shango" a shakedown, stripping it down to sultry simplicity. For even deeper vibes head straight to the rattling riddims of the Ancient Astronauts' remix of "Soundboy (Wake The Sound)" or J Boogie's deep dubby house take of "One World".

Review:
It's a refreshing change to hear a bootleg mash-up that eschews the familiar in favour of something a little different. That's certainly the case with "Trouble In The Streets", which sidesteps the familiar funk breaks staples - obvious rap acapellas, overused breaks, well-worn party records - in favour of a dextrous, loose-limbed combo of classic jazz-dance (the groove from St Germain's "Rose Rouge"), dancehall vocal stabs, subtle breaks and elastic bass. "Ya Playin", meanwhile, gives an authentically old skool rub to a familiar hip-hop staple, re-casting it as a boom-bap mix of head-nodding beats and lazy horns.

Review:
Hold on to your hats, rare funk fans, because we don't have one super-rare reissue here, we've got two! Anybody who was around in the late 80s or early 90s will remember the Jheri Curled Atlantic Starr behind such wedding DJ staples as "Always". Well, before the dry ice and slushy ballads, they were a tough funk ensemble called Newban. Now both their long lost 70s albums have been remastered for your listening pleasure. Highlights include the Curtis Mayfield-esque "Why Did You Desert Me", the brass-heavy "Mellow Days, Easy Nights", The Sesame Street vibes of "Greenburgh" and the Stevie Wonderisms of "Easin' Through".

Review:
The Night Train's new release on Acid Jazz marks nearly a quarter of a century since they first inked a deal with the iconic label. Punk is not normally a genre associated with the laid back vibes of Acid Jazz, but here we see the band tackle this classic anthem by Brit punks The Stranglers. Instead of growls and angry guitars, we get a sugary northern soul interpretation, with a stomping Motown beat and a brassy orchestration that makes us think of the easy listening sounds of the BBC's old in-house orchestra. In other words, prime party music!

Review:
Two banging beats from 2Dogs, with "Rumpshaker" earning its title courtesy of some heavy wobblin' bass and crafty drums, coupled with samples from the Junkyard Band's "Sardines" - all of which comes together to recall Shut Up and Dance or The Ragga Twins. Fingathing's Peter Parker digs out his MPC for "Deadly DIY", chopping up some fine Hammond-driven funk and turning in a fresh and funky beat.
