Review:
Olivia De Lanzac is one international hipster (Born in the Congo, raised in Greece, based in London, releases on New York's DFA). This new mini-album, "Uncut" on soul/funk/hip-hop label BBE is one stoned classic. "Sketches Of Blue" begins with found samples and an anxious 70s cop film vibe, with it's low and dirty bass, "Get Free" sounds more like the kind of music found in a 70s skin flick and, with it's funk drum and vocal samples and intense bass, "Uncut" almost sounds like late 80s hip-hop a la NWA. Elsewhere we find mega-stoned dub "Gasoline Rainbow", 60s jet set disco, "Maani", arty noise "Thaeneb" and the surprisingly upbeat pop-funk of "Pyrexia".

Review:
From the dedicated funk fans at Colemine Records, this split single from Californian rootsy funkers On The Spot Trio shines - thanks to the lashings of Hammond organ, raw funky drumming (a la Bernard Purdie or Jabo Starks) and vintage chanking guitars. Lead tune "Suction" comes in at a fast and furious tempo while the slower and more grooved-out "Critically Acclaimed Shit" reminds of Jimmy Smith in his prime.

Review:
Until recently an obscure footnote in the history of 70s Afrobeat, Benin's Orchestre Poly Rhythmo have undergone a spectacular revival of late (much like Senegal's Orchestra Baobab) culminating in this "new" album on Strut. Made up mostly of re-recordings of older songs, it's a fascinating and very funky record. Guitar-driven gems like "Tegbe" show off the poly-rhythmic side to their name, while softer, less percussive songs like "Ma Vie" are instantly heart warming. Two of Franz Ferdinand even show up on closer "Lion Is Burning", not that it meddles with their huge, brass-drenched funk one bit - if anything, it ends up sounding like Eno-produced Talking Heads.
