Review:
Portuguese nu-funk fella Mr Bird doesn't hang around; having only just recently dropped the long player 'Know Your Rodents", he's already back with this new two tracker. "Sun Beams Rising" is an impeccable slice of Balaerica all sustained tension and sultry sunset grooves, oh and some seriously badass synth lines. "Telephonik" is less seductive, but goes for a perky, jazzier electro-funk jam that's certainly pleasant enough.

Review:
Big brassy vintage soul samples, sci-fi movie clips and big bloc party beats, we're deep into the 90s right? Wrong! This is vintage hip-hop 2013 style. This album is the side project of Matthew Brewer (aka Frameworks), who has collaborated with Canadian MC Blu Rum 13 (aka One Self) for a refreshingly unmaterialistic long player that heralds a return to rap's daisy age. Forget the bling and just concentrate on the good times!

Last time we checked, you could get arrested for certain kerbside collections. Jokes like that probably didn't occur to Brisbane jazz-funk outfit Kerbside Collection when recording this debut album. Largely because they were escaping the 2011 freak floods that devastated their home town. However they rose above the odds and laid these tracks down the old fashioned way (recorded all together in a room- warts and all) including a gritty jazz funk George Benson cover ("P Park"), a jazz/reggae number ("Red Stripe") and a cool jazz dance cover of a John Coltrane classic ("Impressions").

Review:
Veteran soul survivor Lee Fields recently released the acclaimed return to form album "Faithful Man', but here we're going back to the early days that he was so recently re-exploring. Released in 1974, "Funky Screw" is a raw and authentic slice of late night sweaty funk. Original B-Side, "The Bull Is Coming" is a similarly blistering joint, with a lot of credit to 'The Devils Personal Band' who supply most of the thrills on this largely instrumental workout.

How do Tramp do it? How do they continuously unearth all these unsung soul heroes? We may never know, but at least the artists featured are lovingly reintroduced to the record buying public, often after years of obscurity. Lonnie Lester is a singer from Indiana who began singing gospel, before moving on to doo-wop and eventually RnB. It's the raw rhythm and blues singles that he released during the 1960s that are collected here including "You Can't Go", "So This Is Love" and the Peter Gunn-esque "Meanest Man In Town".

Review:
Los Transatlanticos are tailor made for BBE, a Bogota/ Berlin troupe whose triumphant 2012 LP First Trip, deftly blended Latin and Caribbean music with modern urban sounds. This addendum release from the label casts material from the album out for reinvention from a series of remixers that include Chris Read, Mr Bird, O de Lanzac, Marflix and Los Transatlanticos' own Dean Bagar aka Tricky D! The resultant eight remixes make for a genre blurring collection that retains the Latin musicality of the source whilst remaining very much appropriate for the dancefloor.

Best known for their expertise in reissuing super-rare rare groove, Record Kicks continue to concentrate on their new habit of signing contemporary talent. Of course much like fellow labelmates Hannah Williams and The Tastemakers, Marta Ren and Co. very much centre their sound of the vintage soul of the 60s. "2 Kinds Of Men" is the kind of raucous, brassy live jam that makes modern soul peddlers like Joss Stone sound pale in comparison. "Summer's Gone (Didn't Swim)" on the other hand is a perky pop ditty that's the perfect vehicle for Ren's big voice.

Review:
With a background that includes playing in Recloose's live band, New Zealand drummer Myele's credentials speak for themselves. Taken from his album One, "On The Move" sees him hooking up with Rachael Fraser for a sleazy soul session that comes across like Lauren Hill jamming with Bellaruche. With bold, near-P funk level bassline and Myele's own swashbuckling organic drum beat it swings like a monkey and is twice as cheeky. So cheeky the instrumental stands alone as a great dancefloor workout.

Review:
Of late, veteran Venezuelan DJ/producer Pablo Sanchez (now residing in Barcelona) has been pushing a sound based around deep house, nu-disco and Afro-funk. However for this new release he appears to return to the jazzier influences that informed his earlier work. "Out & About" is six minutes of party clap beats and sizzling freeform jazz. On the remix front, Kyodai goes for a crazy, escalating, Dave Brubeck inspired freakout while Opolopo delivers a more familiar funky house version.

Review:
This Manchester collective's name is pretty literal - they got their name (and reputation) from their riotous live shows that have ripped roofs off venues right across Europe! Released on DJ Gilla's First Word imprint, this debut two-track single offers up a cross section of what to expect from their live gigs. ""Corn On The Cobb" is a sassy, brassy, Mexican-tinged party starter, while "Paradox", although still rousing has a more melancholic air. It's looking good for forthcoming album "Sousamaphone!".
