Originally released by Jess & Crabbe in 1999 and 2000 respectively on the French label Fiat Lux, "The Big Booya" and "Council" were a pair of proto French Touch bangers that are now the subject of a reissue from Hot Haus, the recently founded offshoot of Unknown to the Unknown. It represents the second reissue that label overseer DJ Haus has been involved in this year, having previously given OHM's early '90s classic "Tribal Tone" a timely new pressing on UTTU. As with that reissue, which saw remixes from Capracara and Marquis Hawkes, both the Jess & Crabbe cuts have been reworked by two equally club-savvy production units in the form of Kodiak and Matrixxman. The former's massive remix gets our vote, somehow combining jungle and footwork into an all encompassing juggernaut of a track.
Given that "Dust to Dust" is coming out on Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert's Maxi Discs label, we probably shouldn't be surprised that it's a gorgeously positive chunk of sun-flecked Balearic disco/house fusion. The first single from the previously unknown Professor Angel Sound and the 13th Tribe (not to be confused with the Ninja Tune-affiliated artist of the same name), "Dust to Dust" blends bouncy synths, bubbling bass and saucer-eyed melodies with baggy disco grooves and saucy guitars. "Ashes To Ashes" is similarly sun-drenched, though operates at a slower, groovier tempo. Dicky Trisco and Pete Herbert each remix the title track, with the latter's Reverso 68 style interpretation being the EP's undoubted highlight.
