Review: As one half of the garage-loving Hot City, it makes sense for DJ Haus to be releasing Radio 1 Xtra and veteran garage and bassline producer DJ Q's All Junglist on his label Unknown To The Unknown - in fact it's almost surprising something like this hasn't been released before. Initially characterized by drum programming that is, well, "junglist", the track is interjected with a beat that is less broken, and more split in half, ripped apart with a tidal wave of woozy bassline action; combined with the tropical synth melody and hardcore referencing piano you've got a track that is classicist and very much in keeping with the label's technicolour focus. It's joined by "Will I Ever Be Free", marked out by a slightly housier touch given by its deep string melody, adding a rich contrast to the swooping low end and crunchy snares. It's a curious mix of bassline garage and Detroit moods, and one that works surprisingly well. Highly recommended!

Review: Weighing in with some cumbersome dubstep styles on his familiar stomping ground, Goth Trad is back to scare the living daylights out of you on "Air Breaker". Proving that there can be some give in big room ravey dubstep, the track may primarily lurch around aggravated mid-range synth grind, but the moments of calm creep in with control that comes from a diverse and adaptable producer. "Cosmos", up next, meanwhile takes the deeper approach, using inter-locking precussion and devastating sub bass for a classic exercise in proper dubstep. Whichever kind of set you're plumping for, this release is definitely for the purists. Highly recommended.

Review: While it might be tricky in these open-minded times for Scuba to shatter preconceptions the way that he did with his Sub:Stance mix a few years ago, this compilation should be seen really as a celebration of the man himself as a DJ. After launching with a decidedly minimalist approach, the mix meanders between pacey techno, bluesy broken beat and rolling dubstep tempos. At times the flow feels unsteady, but then it just rings true that he put this mix together for himself. Without a dancefloor to look after, who knows where many of our favourite DJs might take us?

Review: For this third release - their first of 2012 - bass music upstarts New World Audio gather together a selection of tunes from a quartet of little-known producers. Sukh Knight's Bhangra-inspired "Shutdown" is probably the highlight. It offers an exotic stroll through dubstep's more melodic pastures, with sampled Indian vocals and Bollywood melodies offering a decent contrast to the sub-heavy bassline. Shandy's aggressive and intense "Jogi" isn't far behind, though, thanks to some punishing rhythms, spangled rave synths and dubwise effects. For those seeking pure dancefloor thrills, look no further than the eyes-closed dubstep-skank of Trex's murky "Mad Mother Dub".

Review: Given the quality of his dreamy, stargazing synth-wave and nu-disco productions, it was probably only a matter of time before Cosmic Metal Mother ended up on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label. It's not hard to see why the Norwegian leftfield disco don snapped up "Italian Cowboy". Slow, synth-heavy and almost dizzyingly claustrophobic, it sounds like an experimental take of nu-Balearica. If you liked the looser, distinctly sunnier Windsurf releases on Internasjonal, "Italian Cowboy" should be right up your street. Thomas himself and Stallions provide the obligatory uptempo remixes, the latter delivering a Bobby O-goes-Nu-disco version that simply bristles with masculine intent.

Review: Punishing dubstep pressure from Footsie here in his controversial and incendiary "1 Spliff" on Braindead Entertainment. Pungent grime lyrics are spat over the most enormous of Noisia-esque basslines, whilst smashing snares and rippling bass dominate with quirky vocal riff laid over the top for the full effect. The accompanying cut "Duppy Mekka" is a rather different beast with lilting, dub-influenced intro with grimy bass and shimmying keys before dropping into a filthy dubstepping monster with bleepy synth work and rumbling subs!

Review: Coki's solo outings are few and far between, with only a handful of productions attributed to his own moniker over the past six years, but what he lacks in output he more than makes up for in consistency. This new EP on his now legendary DMZ imprint is a case in point; "Tree Trunk" consists of the kind of jackhammer bass and tense synths that could only come from South London, whilst "Lower Octave" sees the sub frequencies getting a full workout across the spectrum, with the bass turning to bleeps as the track reaches its climax. Up next, "Celestial Dub" is a much less abrasive affair, instead taking its cues from classic dub, combining a number of delay soaked piano and reverb laden organ chords over its enveloping bassline, and "Think Your Gone" adds significant brain-melting oscillation to its subs to rank among Coki's deadliest productions.

Review: Swindle brings us "Ignition" on his own label. Blending boogie and soul flavours with power dubstep, this is an ingenious mix of flavours that must be beheld to be believed. The title track sees him team up with Footsie & Nadia Suliman for a whomping, low-slung number with swaggering b-line and halfstep lumber, lyrics laid lucidly over the top. "Ringworm" is a more synth-laden outing with a Joker circa "Purple City" style element and echoing beats, before "Out Of The Blue (feat. Stinkahbell)" rounds things off with a Rustie style whirr of synths and belching of bass.

Review: J Kenzo makes an appearance on the lauded and legendary Tempa imprint with these two tough little tracks, which display heaps of character and genre-defining skill. "Ruffhouse" sees Kenzo team up with Rod Azlan for an intriguing journey, dominated by bleepy synth melody and low-slung bongo drum for the first minute, before dropping into a classic mid-noughties dubstep burner with hypnotic bass and weighty soundscape. "Therapy" is reminiscent of some of Pinch and the Tectonic crew's more experimental work, with a techno twinge, fidgeting beats, a Benga & Coki bleep and plenty of unique character to set it apart from the rest.

Review: Surge steps up for a truly excellent release on N-Type's Wheel & Deal. Proper, bonafide dubstep is the aim of the game here, with an ominous, atmospheric intro with gloomy pads and cooing vocal element adding a warm glow to the otherwise bleak outset. A shimmy of synths, bass wobbles and souped up synths kick in and the dreamy, breathy vocal courtesy of Pyxis floats atop. Next up, Surge goes solo in "Swaying Mantis" which is all lurching rhythms, grinding synths, weighty bass flavours and understated menace.

Blending a unique collection of sounds, this one's all about The Prodigy style 90s rave stabs, rattling jungle-influenced breaks, driving b-line and dubstep-inspired soundscape. Review: Making the bold decision to rework a couple of much loved jungle classics, it's over to the ever-outrageous bolshy dubstep playboy Doctor P and jungle revivalists the Serial Killaz for two sterling remixes of Krome & Time's "The Licence" and "Ganja Man". First of all is Doctor P's synth soaring, exuberant take on the original, with the vocal weaving around bubbling synth belches, quirky chiptune melodies, smacking snares and a computerized vocal calling "remix". Watch for the tempo switches in the second half! Then there's the Serial Killaz remix of "Ganja Man" which brings out the original reggae flavour and mixes it in with some sharp, rattling breaks and rave-tastic bellows.

Review: Another top-notch release from Distance's immense Chestplate imprint, this time from the one they call Sleeper. "Zombies" is every bit as scary as the name might imply - a post-apocalyptic, industrial soundscape dominated by spaced out SFX, sweeping atmospherics and gruesome, stabbing drums and a dense, pummelling b-line. "Scanners" progresses from a tense, uncertain intro into a rolling, menacing little number, with tripping beats and grouchy bass. Digital exclusive "Narrow" wraps up the package with chirpy SFX and plenty of growling sub bass.

Review: Arriving in a fashion not dissimilar to the all encompassing deviations from Burial is "Far Nearer", the long awaited drop from The xx's Jamie - courtesy of the always on point Numbers imprint. Subject to many a YouTube appearance over the months, this charming steel drum infused summer jam can finally be enjoyed after potential sampling issues were circumnavigated by the smudged vocal that runs throughout being re-recorded. It's perhaps too twee and gentle to drop in the midst of a set, though it will certainly have the requisite effect should you deem to slip it in at the end! Complementing this, "Beat For" channels darker sounds, with off kilter drum drops at the core surrounded by gut punching sub bass undulations, bubbling sonics and pitched out vocals with punching throwback house riffs giving the track rhythmic impetus.

Review: Two razor sharp cuts here from Biome which traverse the dubstep genre with great aplomb, employing lacerating drums and weighty sub bass rumbles throughout. Kicking things off with "Minus", which builds gradually with thumping drum kicks, grinding b-line and plenty of menacing SFX echoing in the darkened soundscape. This rolls along with intimidating swagger for the duration before we move on to its counterpart "Moody", all crackling noise on the intro and enormous, snapping snares and bubbling bass for the main part. Heavyweight dubstep business.

Review: Plastician's '08 debut album gets revisited. Coming straight outta Croydon with the gnarliest beats imaginable, the legendary dubstep/grime pioneer brings us such iconic anthems as "Intensive Snare" featuring the agile lyrical prowess of East London's Skepta which is all "high hats, treble and bass!" alongside such rambunctious riddims as "Real Things" which brings in Frisco, Chronic, Tempz and Esco as well. Elsewhere, things get more dubbed out (see "Hocus Pocus" or "Shallow Grave") and mournful and melodic, like breathtakingly beautiful "Japan" which concludes the album. An outstanding body of work and an essential for dubstep heads new and old.

Review: Absurdly talented for a man of only 19 years of age, Porter Robinson has released huge electro/dubstep originals for Deadmau5's Mau5trap imprint, remixed Pendulum and now drops his first full-length EP on Skrillex's nascent OWSLA label. The epic drop of the slow-building opener "Spitfire" sees Robinson launch the EP just the right way - with plenty of shape shifting, tempo swapping dubstep stutters - while the more dancefloor friendly "Unison" takes over straight after with a storm of trancey leads and chords. This form of dubstep-electro hybrid serves him well on stand out tune "Vandalism" too, while mixes from Kinife Party, Mikkas, Skism and Kill The Noise only intensify the range of heavy wobbles on offer on this huge release.
