Review: Ignoring the title for a moment (surely it should be "Let Go Of The Past"!?), this dubwise bass music shuffler from Fretless is a lot of fun. The original version is a bit of a curiosity, sitting somewhere between dubstep, breaks and radio-friendly pop with silky-smooth vocals amd ruffneck toasting from MC Shureshock. Will Styles remixes, upping the wobble factor for those who enjoy being slapped round the chops with botty-bothering bass. Virtual flipside "SOS" offers something a little more traditional, mixing sharp horns and other funk elements with P-funk squiggles, thick bass pulses and faithfully snappy breaks. A solid package is rounded off by a jaunty, P-funk flavoured remix from Omegaman. Highly recommended.

Review: Only 21years old, yet already bearing his own singular sound and style, James Blake is clearly destined for greatness if this EP is anything to go by. A singer and producer, he's already delighted fans under his Harmonimix alias with his cover of Destiny Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills" and now takes his futuristic vision of R&B further, sampling old Kelis and Aaliyah tunes on the title track, mangling them beautifully. Reverbed and pitch-shifted, the vocals sit over a melancholy and glitchy beat. "Footnotes" uses vocoders with style and builds over time while "I'll Stay" brings out the samples again and chops them in an amazingly robotic fashion. This is very special stuff and despite a penchant for all things 90s R&B it still sounds vitally fresh.

Review: Weighing in with some cumbersome dubstep styles on his familiar stomping ground, Goth Trad is back to scare the living daylights out of you on "Air Breaker". Proving that there can be some give in big room ravey dubstep, the track may primarily lurch around aggravated mid-range synth grind, but the moments of calm creep in with control that comes from a diverse and adaptable producer. "Cosmos", up next, meanwhile takes the deeper approach, using inter-locking precussion and devastating sub bass for a classic exercise in proper dubstep. Whichever kind of set you're plumping for, this release is definitely for the purists. Highly recommended.

Review: Braintree based solo artist Brown & Gammon lays claim to the Essex dubstep crown with this latest brace of bangers for the Circus label. Following on from last year's massive "Painkillers" which caused considerable damage, "Blow My Mind" continues the theme with stomping drums, squiggly synth hooks and a bouncy, house influenced mid-section setting this one apart from the pack. "Riddle Me This" mashes up anthemic pads with Prodigy style cut up vocal snippets over skippy beats with a reggae sensibility. One to watch.

Review: The widely discussed, highly anticipated "Tommy's Theme" from Dutch maestros Noisia finally gets a universal release on Deadmau5's Mau5trap label. An epic, cinematic intro with sweeping, euphoric synths, choral elements and tense progressions leads into a tumultuous drop with buckets of synth twisting, electro-house trembles. Review: For those who like their dubstep dark, twisted and super heavy with 4/4 electro-house influences and a heavy metal soundscape, then look no further than Excision. His collabs with Datsik have been shaking speakers across the globe, but now he steps up with his album on Deadmau5's Mau5trap label. The 10-track bonanza sells itself on being "X Rated" - cue lots of shuddering synths, bellowing horror movie vocals, bass belches and mid range grouches. Collaborations with Messinian, Downlink, Datsik, Skism and Mr Hudson (yes, you heard!) feature, with some top moments including the retro 80s chiptune tones of "8 Bit Superhero", the formidable "Sexism" and more. Review: Big return to the Deep Medi fold for Japan's Goth Trad, with his four track EP Babylon Fall given even further sheen by the presence of a certified Jah legend in Max Romeo! If that name doesn't elicit an "oh gosh" response then back to Music History night classes with you! The iconic Jamaican vocalist lines the title track with aplomb, giving the vintage dread step vibes of Trad's arrangement that extra air of authenticity. Elsewhere, "Falling Leaf" and "Itinerant Priest" see the self described One Man Army serving up a couple of militant excursions through industrial sub bass dynamics - with the latter particularly unrelenting! "Sublimination" ends proceedings with some cross pollination between Detroit techno and vintage dubstep.

Review: This album from serial electronic music experimentalist Ulrich Troyer is surprising on many levels - not least that it's been released by Mala's respected Deep Medi Musik imprint. Fiercely downtempo, Songs For William sees Troyer turn his hand to dub with mesmerizing results. Troyer has previously eschewed more traditional musical forms in favour of white noise and breathtaking ambience, but here he gets the formula just right. The combination of dubstep/dub techno style atmospherics, unassuming dub rhythms, analogue pulses and soft-focus electronic melodies is judged perfectly (see the Kraftwerkin-dub vibes of "Driving To Cologne", or brilliantly titled "Shoegazing Muff"), resulting in an album that's simultaneously calming, beautiful and steadfastly otherworldly.

Review: This second full-length from London-based producer Soloman 'Silkie' Rose - the follow-up to 2009's City Limits Volume 1 - further develops a deep and melodic take on dubstep that should appeal far beyond the genre's underground stronghold. With bright melodies, jazz chords, ear-catching synths, sampled horn stabs and future garage style vocal cuts aplenty, City Limits Volume 2 has far more in common with, say, the far-thinking two-step exploits of Phuturistix or Hospital Records' genre-bending Outpatients series than most dubstep full-lengths. But it's these qualities that make it such a rewarding, enjoyable and essential release.

Review: Marking the much anticipated 50th release on Pinch's ever-impressive Tectonic imprint, it's over to the legendary Photek, recently reincarnated from his jungle / D&B roots into the contemporary house-meets-dubstep zeitgeist for this landmark release. "Closer" is a bonafide bass music bonanza, with echoes of his D&B past neatly sewn in, though it is firmly steeped in dubstep present, with crisp drums, sweeping atmospherics and a mournful, wailing vocal setting the tone. Pinch's re-lick is a deep, dubby garage influenced piece, with rolling subs and compelling rhythms. Deeply enticing and a must buy for all ardent bass heads.

Review: Mala's Deep Medi Musik maintain their high standards in 2011 with the welcome return of VIVEK on a plump four track selection that matches his earlier release Pulse. What Eyes Down lacks in titular imagination, it more than makes up for in terms of refined dubstep preshah! Opening with "The Big Bang" Vivek further displays a penchant for simmering cinematic tension, as growling subs prowl the nether regions beneath a sparse half step riddim. In contrast "Spread Love" demonstrates Sharda's prowess with crafting intricately programmed beats that flex with a UKG swing but retain a stepper template. What really impresses is how the heavily dosed up purple vibe gradually engulfs the track. Elsewhere "Sirens" envelopes the straight up, crisp 808centric drums in an array of delayed droning effects, before slipping in a lazily skanking melody, whilst the title track is Sharda showing off his sub bass capabilites.

Review: Along with his more D&B-slanted aliases Slum Dogz and Picto, Shaun "Doctor P" Brockhurst has become a dubstep icon, thanks to releases on Circus (co-founded with Flux Pavillion and Swan-E). Here, he reaches for that old standard, the Tetris theme, and wreaks absolute havoc with it. Dropping from the straight chiptune rendering of the original into a fierce metallic beat 'n' wobble riff, he arranges it sweetly, toying with the tune in short bursts amongst the carnage of the amped-up snares and bass noise. Expect this to get dropped simply everywhere very very soon.

Review: Mala's Deep Medi Musik imprint hasn't put a foot wrong in 2011 with some weighty relentless steppahs from VIVEK and Tunnidge getting the collective thumbs up from the Juno review staff. The label maintains the momentum here - finally unleashing the VIP version of Truth's 09 pressure "Fatman"! Fatalist dread vibes abound though it's the crushing weight of the sub bass that truly captivate. Truth complements this update with "Dreams Never Come True" which churns through heavily chopped machine rhythms and left of centre sampledelica with dizzying ease - making for a track that is probably difficult to dance to, but easy to appreciate!

Review: Tectonic label boss Pinch ups the ante, bringing in collaborative reinforcement from long term friend and Swamp 81 owner Loefah in "Broken", and the 130bpm lurking, bass loving Roska for "Paranormal Activity". In short, expect deep, dubbed out, speaker-rattling soundscapes in abundance, with oodles of sub bass and meditative panache from both tracks. "Broken" pairs clamorous snares with bleepy riff and tense, trembling Metalheadz style synthline, making for a serious slab of dubstep finesse whereas "Paranormal Activity" features trademark Roska percussion, shimmering orchestrals and slo mo lurching rhythms. Immense and essential.

Review: Manhatten Blues sees Cyrus return to Mala's Deep Medi Musik imprint in fine style building a serene and thoughtful piece of music from quivering chords, a deep, dark bassline, swaggering beats and that wonderful sense of woozy, meditative slowness that defines the more "intelligent" side of dubstep these days. Tribal, pattering drums pepper the piece with a hint of the exotic before you are caught up once again in the insistent pull of the bass and beats alone. Flipping over for "Decisions", Cyrus shakes things up with a more rambunctious offering. Still maintaining a classy, understated style, the beats bounce jauntily with a dollop of grizzled synth work adding some grit to the glamour. Superb.

Review: Tunnidge digs into the crates, tunes into the old Metalheadz vibes and comes out with THAT iconic Vangelis sample from "Bladerunner" which Dillinja used a clip from in "Angel's Fell". But here, Tunnidge turns it on its head, taking us into a dark, demonized underworld of existence with a punishing, inky black bassline for a slice of super sleek dubstep on Mala's Deep Medi Musik. On the flip, "Tribe" - as the title implies - employs a tribal palette of sounds, a vocal conjuring spirits and an eerie oriental wail penetrating through the fabric of the music. Pummelling drumbeats strike the tone and all in all, it's an exciting, interesting release from Tunnidge which breaks the mould on the flip.

Review: A dirty screwed-up anthem from Flux Pavilion who delivers a real gem with "Got To Know". Produced with stunning precision, this half-stepping monster rides a clever descending chord sequence that gets fleshed out with tons of bitcrushed bass. With a female vocal that drops on every 32 bars, it's utterly relentless. "Normalize" is more pacey - switching up tempos at the drop of a hat while the buzzing synths flit between octaves. Proof that Flux Pavilion just keeps getting sharper and sharper, this is not to be missed for bassheads everywhere.

Review: Leeds producer Jack Sparrow puts a big dose of Funky into his dubsteppy beats on "Terminal", keeping the bass and the pace in equal measure makes for a blistering tune. "Torment" is a slower, darker tune which uses some beautiful atmospherics to fill out the space between the half-step beats. Released on the highly touted Tectonic imprint, Jack Sparrow is a name to follow in the future.

Review: Having spent the best part of honing his skills in Budapest and (briefly) Bristol, dubstep studio boffin DJ Madd presents his debut full-length, the decidedly murky The Real & The Shadow. Opening with the creepy, low-end strut of "The Real & The Shadow" itself, Madd delivers a set that variously alternates between dark room intensity, synth-laden creepiness and muscular, crowd-bating riddims. There are some notable diversions along the way - not least the soft-centred vocal cut "Deeply" and old skool rave-up "Junglist" - but these are merely odd moments of clarity amidst the paranoid, weed-stoked gloom (see the sonic paranoia of "The Life You Choose").

Review: A pair of impressive collaborations from Commodo and Lurka, which utilise impressive production and an keen awareness of negative space to create two tracks that are sonically devastating yet display a real maturity. "Airtight" is dominated by a huge bassline that cuts through the mix, but it's the minimal samples that add the real character, utilising a sparing distorted cyborg-like vocal, and even a tense guitar lick which adds an intriguing moment of calm to the proceedings. "Gassin" utilises the same razor sharp bass, but with occasional snatches of a hollowed out female vocal, clattering percussion and laser synths combining to create a particularly foreboding atmosphere. Definitely a release to check out if you like your dubstep pure!

"Tempted" begins with a melange of echoes and textured SFX and proceeds into a classic lurching halfstep venture, with treacly rhythms, reverberations a-plenty and buckets of menacing bass ribbits. As previewed on Rinse FM, if you like your Hatcha, Distance and N-Type style riddims then this is undoubtedly one for you, as Lurka melds the enticing bass weight with head nodding ability, making it a classic 3am stomper. Part of the Black Box XXX series, it's a collector's dream, no question.
