Review: Leeds-based Last Magpie thinks of himself as something a musical magpie, pinching bits and pieces from various genres to create something new and fresh. "(Who Knows) Where Love Goes" sets the tone, lacing borrowed vocals over a skittering groove that sits somewhere between chunky deep house, fluid '80s electro and UKG. "Pilau Rice", meanwhile, sounds like an unholy marriage between woozy Detroit deep house, Chicago boompty and Futureboogie-ish Bristol grooves. "Don't Know Why", adds a little vintage piano house flavour into the pot (while retaining the electro-influenced beats), while the brilliantly named "Club Whore" somehow manages to fuse swingtime horns, dizzy vocals and bumpin' house.

Review: It's hard not to fall in love with "1983", the title cut from this three-track showcase on the blossoming digi-label Body Work from London dwelling Paraguayan troupe LPZ (who also operate as Keepup! favourites Lopez) Melding electrofunk stabs and dubbed-out synths to a gigantic, acid-inspired synth bassline, it feels far more driving and energetic than its 122 BPM tempo - thanks, perhaps, to use of cut-up rap vocal samples. "Mafia (Dub)" offers a darker, groovier vibe, twisting deep house in to murky and, crucially, bassy new shapes. A booming EP is completed by the oddly titled "Snake & Butterfish", a chugging, acid-laden slow jam that seemingly revels in its nightmarish atmospherics. Quietly impressive stuff.

Review: Wow! Are people looking back with rose-tinted glasses to 1995 already? Well at least this 'musical magpie' is only borrowing ideas and sounds rather than copying wholesale!
