Review: Shangaan Shake is the complete document of the remixes Honest Jon's commissioned to pit leftfield Western artists against the Shangaan electro of South Africa. It's an all-star cast, from house heroes to dubstep tinkerers. Mark Ernestus turns out an elegant slice of dub techno, while DJ Rashad and RP Boo throw down a sweaty slice of footwork action, and Peverelist plies a typically complex rhythm at a slower, seductive tempo. Out of all the remixers, Theo Parrish is the one unafraid to maintain the original BPM, which leaves his remix stark against the multitude of other tracks. Essential.

Review: A Berlin based legend, Jan Driver has not only remixed AVH, Laurent Garnier and Faithless over the years, he's been the go-to engineer for Modeselektor, Siriusmo and Riva Starr too. Following a couple of EPs on Boys Noize's label in 2008, this first full-length EP is as stunning as it is overdue. Approaching low frequencies with no fear whatsoever, "Amatilda" is brilliant example of bass in all its glory - from the live drums vs basspocalypse of "Dozer", the insanely funky "Tin Tin", the slow funk of "Golden Super" or the beautiful ethno-step of Siriusmo-collaboration "Let's Do It Together", Amatilda is simply essential for anyone in thrall to the sounds of modern Berlin tech.

Review: It sounds like the German label could have a big hit on their hands here. "Awake" is a subtle fusion of the Kompakt shuffle and German minimal house traditions, as doubled up drums bring subtle acoustic guitar flourishes and Blomqvist's falsetto to a climax. Meanwhile "Something Says" comes across like Superpitcher in more grounded form than usual thanks to its heavy claps and bubbling bassline. However, it's the title track that may well enter the pop charts. Starting ff with stripped back beats, it progresses to reveal a breathy vocal, draped by beautiful piano and lush strings. Blomqvist's tones are understated and androgynous, but "Ink" has an intangible, magical quality that will endear it to a wider audience.

Review: The brilliantly-named Griffin James continues his meteoric rise with the delivery of another strong EP, this time for Kolour Recordings. "Sing To Me" is a touch different to previous Francis Inferno Orchestra releases, but still boasts Griffin's trademark production and attention to detail. The lead cut builds a lolloping deep house groove around lazy midtempo drum breaks, offering both laidback shuffle and effortless atmospherics. Both the brighter "Go Easy On Me Girl" and Deep Space Orchestra-ish "All Up In This Shit" return to more traditional deep house pastures, mixing chunky 4/4 grooves with delicious organs and intoxicating pads.

Review: Despite their fairly deep and tech-tinged roots, Drumpoet Community have a tendency to get anthemic every now and then (see AFMB's spine-tingling "Backup Days" from a couple of years back). This two-tracker from up and coming producer Gianni Siravo is one of those occasions. Lead cut "Basement Chord" is a real shirts-off affair - a riotous, basement-friendly combination of bumpin', boompty-influenced low-end bounce, Detroit-techno influenced hissing hi-hats, rave-era riffery and nagging piano hooks. It even has some sharp, high-end strings and whispered vocal samples. It's not so much big but gargantuan! The accompanying "Basement Dub" tones it down a touch, focusing on the groove for darker late night moments.

Review: Following the acclaimed Tini album come these diverse remixes. Carl Craig's take on "My Shine" sees the Detroit veteran in minimal mode, as ominous vocals and dense, hissing percussion are combined with tough techno beats. There are no dramatic strings or epic synth sweeps, just the unflinching repetition of Craig's metronome beats. At the other end of the spectrum is Pulshar's take on "Mine Has A shower", where detached but breathy vocals linger like cigarette smoke over swirling, seductive synths. Finally, Martin Buttrich drops an inspired take on "Blond Galipette". The German producer's drums are sleek and functional, but the French vocal is sensual and flirtatious, making for an alluring combination of the robotic and primal.

Review: With releases to his credit on Diynamic, 2020 Vision, Get Physical and Defected, Spanish producer Uner notches up an appearance on another esteemed label. "Pallene" is a swinging tribal groove with tough beats but a light, jazzy touch. There is also a hint of Luciano's own melancholic sound of yore - especially the approach he favoured on his Blind Behaviour album - as subtle melodies compete for the listener's attention. "Cocoua" is also based on a rolling tribal groove, but again Uner takes the path less travelled, with a sassy guitar solo and a shimmering piano line making it stand out from typical DJ tool tracks.

Review: Nic Fanciulli's label documents the dark, deranged side of tool house on Matters & Ashes. Tougher and denser than the standard DJ fare, the impenetrable groove of "Matters" provides the backdrop for a chemically refreshed male vocal, rambling on in a way that makes Marshall Jefferson's performance on "Mushrooms" seem positively normal. However, it's "Ashes" that really impresses: once again, &Me deploys a rolling, drummy backing track and intersperses the arrangement with subtle breakdowns. But it's the combination of another tripped out male vocal - where do they find them? - and a purring Resse bass that makes "Ashes" so irresistible.

Review: Joining us in doffing our caps to Danish DJ/producer Noir, whose enduring label celebrates five years in the only way it knows how - with a compilation highlighting the imprint's delicious back catalogue. 5 Years Of Noir Music showcases some of the finest slices of deep, minimal house music that positively drips with emotion; check the uplifting Nicolas Masseyeff remix of Hot Since 82's "Let I Ride", and Manuel Tur's killer refix of Larse's deep soul jam "So Long" for just two examples, but in all honesty picking out highlights is an exercise in futility as the entire package is just so strong.

Review: Given the runaway crossover success of the (utterly superb) Storm Queen debut "Look Right Through", it was inevitable that producer Morgan Geist and vocalist Damon C Scott would try and repeat the trick. This follow-up single treads similar ground to its illustrious predecessor, lacing Scott's evocative vocals over Geist's delightful vintage house grooves (which, of course, come blessed with the Metro Area man's usual 808 disco sheen). It's a touch deeper than the super-hooky "Look Right Through", but that's no bad thing. While it's unlikely to scale the heights of its predecessor, "It Goes On" is still an excellent record. The dub, in particular, is spot on.

Review: Could classic garage - and not the funky sound - make a comeback this year? It's not out of the question, especially if this release is anything to go on. The title track straddles the grey area between classic NY garage and the late 90s London variant as insistent E-sweat vocals about keeping moving ride a plunging bassline. The Manik NY version adds in doubled up claps and those unmistakably tight drums pioneered in the Big Apple and appropriated in London, finished off with a trippy acid riff. "Nothing Else Matters" offers a darker take on the sound with a focus on a rolling groove and insistent vocals, while the Hot Since 1982 version is all about the irresistible swing.

Review: Having previously appeared last week in remixed form, Sebastien Tellier's comeback single gets a second airing - this time backed with a solitary remix from French noisenik-come-rave hero Brodinski. Tellier's original is in many ways typical of his work of recent times, fusing elements of squidgy electrofunk, fuzzy rock and heady synth-pop with his notorious half-sung, half-spoken vocals. Brodinski's remix is also fairly typical, offering a slinky tech-house groove that suddenly turns into an arms-raised electro stomper half way through. By the time the weighty sub-bass and cranium-snapping riffs drop in, your arms will be raised skywards in appreciation. The piano breakdown is a nice touch, too!

Review: Given the re-emergence of good old-fashioned house music in the last couple of years, it's little surprise to find another disco/electrofunk imprint abandoning filter-heavy discoid edits in favour of piano-laden old skool goodness. "Soul Brother" is spine-tingling stuff - all early-90s pianos, snappy beats and hazy, sampled vocals. Label bosses Ruben & Ra employ a delicious jazz break on their woozy remix, which turns the anthemic original into a lovingly crafted chunk of mid-90s deep house groovery. "Chord Cracker" offers a starry-eyed take on deep house (with, it should be said, more than a touch of 80s soul), while "Shiver & Breeze" slows things down impressively. Recommended.

Review: It sounds like the title track on this release is an ode to one of Underworld's greatest moments. Over rolling, organic drums, Hemmann lays down what could be a trancier take on the central riff from the well-worn chestnut "Born Slippy". However, it would be unfair to suggest that he is merely revisiting former glories. "You Know" is an irresistibly infectious serving of Cologne trance, its floaty chords combined with lazy, hazy vocals that conjure up images of sunny, stoned days and drinking cider in fields. Finally, "Roundabout" is an acrobatic breakbeat workout with a similarly melodic feeling.

Review: Move D is currently in the midst of one of those periods where everyone wants a piece of him, and, for a man who has been consistently doing his thing with the minimum of fuss for a long time now, it's impossible to begrudge him time in the spotlight. This is the producer's fourth release for the German label Workshop Records, following the DJ Late collaboration on Workshop 02, the Playtime album (as Reagenz) and a split release with Even Tuell and Sascha Dive on Workshop 04. Jangling melodies, smoky guitars and barley there vocals whisper below an insistent beat on "Track 1", while the two other offerings are soaked in the trademark Move D style; deft arrangements and subtle yet irresistible sonic touches. The pool cue percussion and submerged Nite Jewel style melodies on "Track 3" are particularly bewitching.

Review: David Moufang has long been electronic music's most underrated producers. Over the years, he's released on such acclaimed imprints as Warp, Philpot, Compost, Workshop, Modern Love and Shanti, run his own acclaimed label (Source Records, not to be confused with the French label of the same name) and happily skipped between raw techno, jackin' acid, minimal grooves and high grade deep house, never once putting a foot wrong. It's some record. The Hydrophonics EP sees him in typically fine form, laying down another intoxicating blend of deep house moods. As you'd perhaps expect from someone of Moufang's experience, all three tracks are immaculately produced, with sophisticated use of melody and little compromise to the rules of deep house fashion. Make no mistake, this is house music for the heads - and all the better for it.
