Review: Slovenian wunderkind Umek has long since left behind the bone-crushing techno and alien electro which he made his name with - and now looks determined to break into the mainstream. Rolling club techno has been Umek's stock in trade for years - it was also a style he made during his purist phase for the Earrisistible label - but Crossing The Line does what its title suggests and traverses the boundary with pop thanks to its insistent vocal snippets and tantalising breakdown. Remixer Ramon Tapia doesn't deviate from Umek's script; while his drums sound looser and the chord stabs are more frenzied, when he leads the listener into the filtered breakdown there's no doubt where the focus is.

Review: Umek may no longer be interested in venturing to the outer limits of electro and techno as Zeta Reticula and Consumer Recreation, but his 1605 label is nothing if it is not distinctive. This compilation features peak time techno grooves peppered with cheeky samples, most notably the Christian Cambas remix of Stefano Noferini's "Words", with its disco diva "back down to earth" vocal and the 70s movie sample on Noferini's version of Umek & Christian Cambas's "On The Edge." Remixed also features more serious contributions, but here too the approaches are unusual: the Da fresh remix of Marco Bailey & Tom Hades's "Tenien" is a searing minimal workout fuelled by a truly malevolent bass, while Cristian Varela's "Plastic Tits" is a collision of tool house and filtered stadium techno. Weird and wonderful.
