Review:
The celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the Acid Jazz label are in full flow and here's yet another nugget re-issued to the sound of popping corks. Mr Washington was a US soul/RnB singer who became hot news in 60s Britain after being stationed here while serving in the US air force. This EP features five songs from this era of his career: the blistering and raw "Holdin On", a spacey, organ-led cover of The Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash", the Dexys-inspiring "Michael (The Lover)" and the racy anthem "High Heel Sneakers".

Review:
It's back to the early 90s for the latest re-release from Acid Jazz Records, who are still celebrating 25 years in the business. This album, which dates from 1993, was essentially a one-album collaboration between two separate Acid Jazz artists, Hugh Brooker and Simon 'MC Wildski' Anniky, and perfectly captures the then cool urban sound of the time. The LP still holds up pretty well today especially on tracks like the chilled and dubby "Beads, Things and Flowers", the Massive Attack-esque "Fly Away" and the edgy, wah-wah heavy "Hitch Hike (The Feeling)".

Review:
Given their close connections with mod culture, it's perhaps no surprise to find Acid Jazz revisiting the back catalogue of Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, a rhythm and blues, soul and ska combo who were popular on the mod scene in the 1960s. Founded when Jamaican singer Jimmy James moved to London in 1960 and hooked up with local London lads the Vagabonds, the combo produced a series of well-received singles and albums for Pickwick, Decca and others throughout the decade. This four-track EP features a string of vintage cuts, from the chunky soul hustle of the "She's Lookin' Good" and horn-powered "Aunt Dora's Soul Shack", to the laidback sweetness of "Why Must I".

Review:
The Night Train's new release on Acid Jazz marks nearly a quarter of a century since they first inked a deal with the iconic label. Punk is not normally a genre associated with the laid back vibes of Acid Jazz, but here we see the band tackle this classic anthem by Brit punks The Stranglers. Instead of growls and angry guitars, we get a sugary northern soul interpretation, with a stomping Motown beat and a brassy orchestration that makes us think of the easy listening sounds of the BBC's old in-house orchestra. In other words, prime party music!

Review:
Complimenting the new Smoove-curated 'best of' Acid Jazz Records, Gravy, this Northern breakbeat producer sees his 90s classic also re-released. The title track is a bona fide anthem: all stomping Motown drums, gritty, loud vocals from Jess Roberts and even a vintage vinyl crackle thrown in for good measure. Also included is a rare instrumental version that highlights the hidden Northern Soul elements of the tune.

Review:
Acid Jazz, the East London label that brought 70s sideburns, retro Addidas and funky live dance music back into fashion, is celebrating it's 20th anniversary. For this, the first in a whole series of anniversary releases, they've invited Northern producer, Smoove, to select his ten favourite cuts from the label's back catalogue. He's gone for a comprehensive mix too: from the (then) zeitgeist-defining Hammond-led Mod anthem "I'm A Man" to the breakbeat-y soul of "Love Is Alive In My Heart" via the shuffly jazz of "Rejoice In Righteousness", the proto-Gnarls Barkley-isms of "Tired Feet" and Smoove's own cover of Gwen McCrae's "All This Love That I'm Giving".

Review:
A six-headed funk/jazz group, The Filthy Six pluck one of the highlights of their second album The Fox for this latest single for the venerable Acid Jazz label. A cover of Michael Jackson's "Girlfriend" would be hard to get wrong, but the crew make the song their own with a mix of Hammond organ, brass, Dap Tones drums and some raw and deliciously soulful vocals.
