Review: A drummer by trade, New Zealand's Julien Dyne extends his mastery of the beats into his follow-up to 2009's Pins And Digits LP, Glimpse. Having high profile fans in Gilles Peterson and Benji B, BBE have picked up this latest album which mixes hazy 2012 bass textures with a healthy hint of soul - often coming via vocalists such as She's So Rad, and Electric Wire Hustle's Ladi6, as on the standout "Who Are You" which recalls Erykah Badu's brilliant 2008 tribute to J Dilla, "The Healer". A must-have for fans of future-thinking soul and wonky, post-Dilla beats.

Review: Long before disco-digging and needless re-editing became the pastime of a generation, Glaswegian graphic designer-turned-DJ Al Kent was doing both. For proof, check his acclaimed, illicit Disco Demands series. Originally launched in 2000 as an outlet for his obsession with barely-known 1970s dance music, it quickly became a conduit for his painstakingly faithful re-edits of long-forgotten disco records. Having seen his stock rise of late, BBE have decided to re-issue each of the five volumes in one bumper box set. For those with a love of disco's stranger fringes, The Best Of Disco Demands should be required listening. With 45 stonking cuts - some re-edits, others original studio versions - across five discs, it's an essential indulgence for disco heads everywhere.

Review: You can always rely on former Sonar Kollektiv man Georg Levin to bring the soul. While not everyone will appreciate his soft-focus approach, his singles are rarely less than lovely. This remix package sees the title track from his most recent LP - a typically breezy concoction - get the dancefloor treatment. Levin himself provides a warm rub that pits snatches of his vocal against classic US garage organs, but the real highlight is the Bara Brost Disco Dub. Low-slung, elastic and gently driving, it turns the original into a rip-roaring P-funk/deep house fusion. The warm soundscape electro version of "Late Discovery" from Earl's Court is worth a gander, too.

Review: An unlikely partnership between two Italian artists - DJ Lusi Radio and keyboardist extraordinaire Raffa Scoccia - results in this new track from BBE. Eagle-eared Louie Vega fans will already recognise it from Louie Vega's Mad Styles and Crazy Visions 2 mix from earlier in the year, and now in its single form, it sparkles as a rootsy, Mediterranean house jam that really puts that organ centre stage - backed nicely by some minimal bass and some effusive djembe and bongo percussion.

Review: This exciting project sees Bara Brost's album Elephancycle get the full remix treatment, with Part 1 featuring six tracks from the record getting interesting reworks. First up, Tim Vita takes the 20s swing sampling "Madame Vita" and stripping out the original's contemporary elements to create an infectious groover. Kareem turns in two remixes; his revision of "Dusty" takes the introspective minimalism of the original and fleshes it out with some colourful melodies, and his version of "Tapdance Shoes" takes the toe tapping weirdness of the original and magnifies it with a menacing vocal. A further two remixes come from Nanopole, who accentuates the bumping rhythms of "Fraulein Lea" and "About A Grumpy Minute" with a palette of detuned synth oddities. Finally That Bleepy Stuff reworks "Fortune Cookie" into something considerably darker, turning the original vocal into something altogether more sinister and drenching it in warehouse sweat.

Review: New from BBE, ace Australian producer Katalyst returns with a splendid follow up to his 2007 album What's Happening? After a reggae opening, the Outkast psych funk of "Black Dragon" makes for a thrilling change of pace, with Mr Clean's rhymes an early album highlight for us. Elsewhere, a remake of Shirley Ellis' "The Clapping Song" is done in the best possible taste, while the synth arpeggios and icy electro drums of "Prince Of Cool" provide a nice change of direction from the brass and funk drums.

Review: BBE lift "Elephancycle", the eponymous title track from Bara Brost's album, and embellish the steely burlesque house vibes with some refined remixes. If you didn't check the album, "Elephancycle" is a contemporary update on the 1920s cotton club jam "Mini The Moocher" and features the distinct vocal talents of Sick City singer Conan Kowalski, whose inherent personality is a perfect fit for the slick yet stripped down backing that has a hint of John Barry. Remixwise, Antoni Oliveri mkes his intentions clear, adding swathes of delay to the orchestral arrangements whilst slipping in a peak time house bump whilst Nadja Lind goes deep, dark and dubby on a skipping minimal groove that jerks with melodic menace.

Review: 18-year-old Norwegian producer/multi-instrumentalist Mathias Stubo may be a relative newcomer, but he's got some pedigree. Both his parents studied at the Norwegian Jazz Academy, and on this debut full-length for BBE, it shows. While there's little in the way of full-on jazz here, the genre's footprints are all over Stubo's wonderfully produced, expertly played disco, funk, soul and boogie-influenced instrumentals. It helps give 1979 (thus titled because most of Stubo's influences dervive from this 'golden year' in black music) a more mature, sophisticated and, critically, musically complex feel than you'd perhaps expect. Coupled with Stubo's clear sense of fun and an 18 year old's love of life, it makes for a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable listen.

Review: This collection of electronic soulful afro and Latino rhythms from hat-wearing Masters At Work veteran Louie Vega is something of a sprawling epic. The full digital package features no less than 42 unmixed tracks, plus two CD length DJ mixes from Vega himself. It certainly offers great value. Musically, it's pretty on-point too, flitting between all manner of heavy afro-tech grooves (the brilliant Lost Heroes remix of Phil Asher's "Textya"), percussive deep house (Eric Kupper's "Bloom", seemingly the blueprint for every Julio Bashmore record), string-drenched soulful flavas (Peven Everett), snappy Latino beats (Terry Hunter) and Vega's own soft-focus take on Latin and Afro house (various Elements of Life remixes). Well worth checking, even if it will take all afternoon.

Fans of the old-school will love Kova & Miles' soulful nu-jazz version of The Meters classic "Handclappin' Song" and Speedometer's take on Eddie Bo's "Love And A Friend", while psych-rock fans should make a beeline for The Chiswick Reach All-Stars' excellent "Nutsin". With more covers, such as Sunlightsquare Latin Combo's excellent version of "I Believe In Miracles" included, this is simply a must for funk fans.

Review: Long-time resident at London hip-hop night Scratch, Richy Pitch fed himself plenty of Ghanaian influences on trips abroad - so much so that his album "Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch" was a staggering confluence of Afrobeat and hip-hop that seriously impressed when it dropped at the end of last year. "Dey Suffer" was a highlight from the album and on this single release, DJ Vadim gets hugely funky with a guitar-fuelled remix, while Kaytronix works up a charming nu-funk mix with a hint of Cumbia to the natural beats. Mr Pitch himself turns in a blindingly languid and soulful mix of his own, while the organic sounds of the original are here also, complete with an invaluable instrumental.

Review: In recent years, we've become accustomed to disco compilations appearing at a furious rate. While many of these compilations are undoubtedly worthy of attention, the volume of releases can sometimes be bewildering. This 15 track selection from Al Kent, the second in his Disco Love series, ticks all the right boxes, however. Even by the highest crate digging standards, these tracks are pretty obscure; many won't have had much of an airing since their original release. Those into the rich, soulful side of disco - that brand of string-laden dancefloor material most associated with the Philadelphia International label and studio -will find much to enjoy. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Scarborough's delightfully sweet "Make Love To You", an epic of biblical proportions that lasts longer than most drunken one night stands. Review: 2009's M+M Sessions Volume One was undoubtedly one of the most essential disco/electrofunk compilations of recent times. Over the course of two discs, it brilliantly chronicled the productive studio partnership of celebrated NYC engineers and mixers John Morales and Sergio Munzibai. No disco collection was complete without it. Naturally, hopes are high for this second instalment. This time round, Morales (the sole survivor of the M+M partnership) has dug even deeper, dusting down previously unreleased versions of some lesser-known disco bangers. For disco completists, then, The M+M Sessions Volume 2 is a more exciting prospect than its predecessor. With 22 strong tracks to choose from - a number featured in both vocal and instrumental formats - picking highlights is tricky. It's perhaps no surprise that some of the real stand-out moments come from Leroy Burgess-related projects - see the deliciously dubbed-out take on the Fantastic Aleems' "Get Down Friday Night", the uplifting "Hooked On Your Love" (another Fantastic Aleems cut) and Logg's "Dancing In The Stars". There's a whole heap of Salsoul-related goodies, including Morales' soon-to-be definitive version of Inner Life's brilliant "Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)". Oh, and a couple of quite remarkable, previously unreleased dubs of vocal disco anthems. Well and truly essential.
