Review: Beirut born, Minneapolis-based DJ/producer Dory Kahale has enjoyed an unusual career trajectory. Since starting life as an acid techno producer in the mid 90s, he's tried his hand at numerous styles, eventually settling on nu-disco. Here he delivers another disco EP on his own Bass United imprint. Opener "Romancing The Nile" delivers an intoxicating, floor-friendly workout based around a killer, clav-heavy groove, while "Life After Ludes" sounds like a breezy modern take on Gino Soccio's late '70s Euro-disco sound. "Get Up Off My Cloud" offers more disco fun - think slap bass, bright guitars and twiddly noises - while "The Fever" harks back to the halcyon days of '90s disco-house.

Review: Having recently impressed with his work under the Dirty McKenzie moniker, Minneapolis-based studio boffin Dory Kahale launches a new project with singer Sophia Shorai. Their first outing is a sleazy, low-slung cover of a French disco classic, given a suitably 2012 makeover. It's Kahale's own version (under the Dirty McKenzie pseudonym) that really stands out, building to an acid-laden climax via rubbery electric bass, sleazy vocals and darting disco guitars. Faze Action offer up a typically synth-heavy electrofunk revision, while local lads Estate deliver two contrasting rubs. The Minneaplois Remix sounds like classic Prince with a breezy disco twist, while the New York City Remix goes for a Jellybean-era freestyle/boogie flex. A great package, all told.
