Review:
An engaging and interesting four-track EP here from 3 Hrs on the Black Butter label, which kicks off with the title track "Absolutely" - a shimmering little number with glistering synths, rumbling bass, ribbiting beats and chopped up, repeated vocal snippet. "Clap Work", up next, continues in a similar vein, with faded, clapping beats, booming sub bass and distanced, echoing vocal element, with repeating insistence to "clap!" Penultimate cut "Fear To" is an eerie, ominous slice of darkness, whilst "Nite Time" slows the pace down, with a stripped back soundscape as the EP draws to a close.

Review:
Taken from 3HRS' debut release for the moody bass label Black Butter, this highlight from the Absolutely EP is a perfectly-pitched coming together of underground drum machine sounds and the titular claps, all wrapped around a complex pattern and a spooky set of acapella shots and background dialogue. A crisp and insatiable beat, with plenty of brooding menace built in.

Review:
Exactly placing this three tracker from Black Butter regular 3HRS is tricky. While it has more in common with analogue deep house - especially the fluid and intoxicating opener "Objective" - than anything else, it also displays a strong bass music influence, with the title track delivering a soulful and sophisticated take on 2-step garage. Then there's the curious case of "Training", which seems to sit somewhere between the eerie iciness of T Williams' "Heartbeats", the rave revivalism of "Lone", and the heart-aching, Detroit-influenced deepness of Mr Beatnick. Either way, it's a great sound. Like the rest of the EP, it's pure cocoa butter.

Review:
From the label who gave us Gorgon City and Rudimental comes another exciting new act, DVWLX (or David Wilcox as he's known to the taxman). Taking the bass flavours of labels such as Pets and Dirtybird but dropping the tempo down a notch or two, "Not Another Love Song" oozes a classy sense of timelessness. "Get Out" is darker and deeper again with a lovely succession of reverberating, dubbed out textures; think 2020 Vision's early output and you're not far off. "Just Like That" takes us deeper again, nodding at formative progressive sounds while maintaining a slight cheekiness with cool VonStroke style diced vocal hits. As far as debut records go, this is near-on faultless.

Review:
According to Black Butter Records, London collective FEAR "draw on the influence of the city to make music best served in a field". Certainly, there's an air of al fresco late night abandon about "I Was Right", a touchy-feely chunk of retro-futurist house that should go down well with those enjoy the music of Waifs and Strays and Eats Everything. Vocal cut "Treat Me Right" is a little different, fusing good old-fashioned beats with the sort of melancholic, floppy fringed synth-pop that's impossible to dislike. A fluid and atmospheric EP finishes with "Astrid", a deep shuffle through instrumental pastures in the company of some particularly memorable melodies.

Review:
Despite getting everyone all hot and bothered with the promise of their collaboration, Gorgon City - aka Foamo and Rack N Ruin - have been sparing with releases to say the least. Still, it's all about quality not quantity, eh? Both tracks on this EP scream class and are immaculately produced: "Intentions" is a slick deep roller, complete with bouncy bass, shuffly garage beats and a soulful 90s-style urban vocal. The percussion is pushed to the fore on the corresponding club mix, but it's the dark and positively subterranean bass vibes of the moody "Cycles" that really does it for us!

Review:
This powerhouse duo - a collaboration between none other than Foamo and Rack N Ruin - dropped their killer debut EP last year and since then things have been ominously quiet. Well, now they're back with a stonking great new release that fully explores the pair's interest in all things deep and groovy. "Real" features the vocal talents of rising star Yasmin and manages to be both an exotic pop anthem and a sparse, 4/4 bass head-nodder. "Thor" is nasty dark basement fodder, "Athena" is a lithe, tropical acrobat of a tune and "10 Below" is a sinister house-meets-garage monster.

Review:
The first fruits of a working partnership between excellent tropical bass man Foamo with fellow UK producer Rack N Ruin, Gorgon City's debut surfaces on Black Butter this week. Title tune "The Crypt" draws in fellow Black Butter family members Rubi Dan and Navigator who verbalize over the dancehall/electro hybrid beats, while "The Truth" plays host to singer Janai and thrillingly fuses grimey bass with hooks and a tech-tropical beat.

Review:
Scotland isn't exactly the first place you think of when listening to Edinburgh dwelling Hostage's Listen EP, (his first for the esteemed Black Butter imprint), soaked as it is in the essence of Rinse FM circa 2002 grime instrumentals. You can pick out the far off eski synths in opener "Listen", and closer "No Bitch Equal", but they're joined by echoes of dub as well as searing basslines - it's quite a cocktail but one that Hostage balances finely. "Dutty Horn" melds a similarly rude bass, and ridiculous horn sample to similarly fine effect, whilst "Dreams" distils the essence of classic hardcore into a UK Funky package, but it's the savage crunch on the kick drum that is bound to impress. The second half of the EP is undoubtedly the most effective - seeing him drop the tempo and allowing his music to breathe a bit more. "Desire" is a bizarrely slowed down but wonderful version of a jungle track, whilst the jackhammer bass of "Razrr" offers some visceral onomatopoeic thrills, made all the more effective for its slowed down pace.

Review:
After releases on Squelch and Clap, Matt Relton aka Kidnap Kid steps up with this new trio of songs for Black Butter. Already boasting DJ support from Skream, Redlight, Martelo and Jaymo, the EP gets off to a killer start with the swirling 2-step of "Vehl", which fans of Deadboy will instantly take to, while "Lazarus Taxon" smoothes out proceedings a little with a boogie acapella thrown over a bubbly, chopped bass beat, while the creeping intro to "Be More" and the ushering in of some stellar snares might just be the highpoint of this hugely impressive EP.

Sheffield's Kidnap Kid wears his influences on his sleeve, or on his Facebook page at least. For it is there where he proclaims his influences to be simply The Beatles. One listen to "So Close" and its apparent that he's very much about solid pop songs. Immaculately produced and unapologetically commercial, this tune features slick production, melodic synth melodies and a warbling Rihanna-style vocal. It's bound to be a hit. Elsewhere we get his own club mix, which is superior only by taking the original and adding housier beats. "Animaux" is similar, being strongly melodic and fluffy.

Enchanting, space-bound soul vibes right here as promising chanteus Lulu follows up "Rope Mirage" with this altogether more alluring package. The lead track pulsates with a fluid-yet-steppy break and hushed amens as Lulu's lyrics are delivered with such skill they lean back over the beats. Label mate 3HRS nails a reversion too with a soft proggy twist that wouldn't have gone amiss on Hooj back in the day. "Stuck" is a more inward-looking lament. Sultry and self aware, it twinkles with a dubby glow.

This collaboration between Marco Del Horno and DJ Swerve ticks all the UK funky boxes. Wobbly, bass-heavy riddim? Check! Touchy-feely breakdown? Check! Essential MC vocal to whip the party into a frenzy? Check and check! In addition to all of these things, there's also a solid instrumental dub (handy if your own MC of choice wants to spit some bars) and a string of solid remixes. Skeptiks provide an aggressive dubstep take, whilst Kutz employs some fantastically organic (maybe even live) drums on his energetic revision. The standout mix comes from Woz, who drops a sonic assault of military drums and bowel-bothering bass.

Review:
A gloriously rambunctious grime-riddled tribal beat presides here in this release from the Noisses on Black Butter. Beats are sparse and bashy, with rough snares and pattering percussion a-top. "Run Your Mouth" also features the talents of Rtkal, Lady Leshurr and Foreign Beggars to expect the unexpected with this one! From the off we are immediately plunged into a dark soundscape with thudding bass stabs offering no mercy. Lyrics are spat over the top with a particularly poignant urban aggression about such contemporary issues as the "keyboard warrior". Accompanying the original are a clean edit and instrumental.

Mixed by RacknRuin, this first journey into the vaults of the Black Butter label throws up some huge grime/UKF bangers. A label that's been showcased by Annie Mac and Zane Lowe in recent months, Black Butter artists like Tomb Crew, Marco Del Horno, Warrior One and Rudimental get put through their paces over these 16 tracks -available either individually or as one continuous mix by Racknruin. Definite highlights include Hostage's deadly remix of Noisses' "The Don" and Warrior One's jungle-influenced take on RacknRuin's own Jessie Ware-hook up, "Soundclash".

The Black Butter crew deliver another EP of essential jungle inspired cuts from a number of big names. RackNRuin & Hostage collaborate for "Dangerous", a breakbeat infused roller filled with roaring bass wobbles, nicely offset with some eski synth action, whilst Pixel Fist remixes Warrior One's "The Jump Off", delivering a huge dubstep inspired breakdown, complete with exceptional flow from Durrty Goodz. Finally, Tomb Crew deliver an electro house inspired cut laden with tropical percussion and dirty bassline action with a garage flex in its insistent rhythms, coming to a soaring glitch fuelled climax. Well worth checking!

Review:
On first listen, this latest missive from the Black Butter camp evokes hazy memories of stumbling down beer-soaked stairs into a sweaty basement full of 19 year-olds losing their nut to old hardcore records and rave-tinged garage rinse-outs. Certainly, "Crashed" is that kind of track. While a UK funky track, it's built around warm, Orbital-ish synth riffs, bouncy percussion and the sort of dewy-eyed, full-throated vocal stabs (presumably from vocalist Queenie) that were once the mark of original breakbeat hardcore records. As a retro-futurist garage/bass music fusion, "Crashed" is therefore both unflinchingly current and weirdly old-fashioned.

Despite only unveiling themselves to the public in 2010, Black Butter Records have already ascended to some impressive heights with a string of hugely popular bass/UKF releases. This first 'proper' label comp features five names from their roster, remixed by many more. It's literally fizzing and popping with retro-futuristic ideas and sounds: from the B-more drum machine orgy of "Be More (3hrs & Woz mix), to Matta's accelerated electro version of Kidnap Kid's classic "Vehl" and Vince Clarke's elasticated tech-house version of "Lazarus Taxon", to the scuzzy, rave-inflected house of Codec's "What You Need", the thoroughly ominous bass tones of "Hackney Heat" by Racknruin via the eccentric end-of the world beats of "Trick Green" by Hostage.

Review:
This second compilation from fast-rising imprint Black Butter Records does a good job in capturing the forward-thinking, open-minded eclecticism for which the label has become known. Kicking off with the post-dubstep, post-garage goodness of the Two Inch Punch remix of Rudimental's "Spoons", Spread Love Vol 2 touches on Hypercolour-ish house, deep 4/4 garage, rave revivalism (DEVolution's "Listen To The Badman (Bass Drop Mix"and My Nu Leng's "Tesla"), fluid, basement-bothering two-step (South Soul Project) and sprawling, classic garage-inspired deepness (3hrs' "Force). Throughout, there's a thoughtfulness and melodic goodness to the floor-friendly material that deserves repeat listens.

Boasting a growing roster that includes P Money, Serocee, Rudimental, Hostage and more, London bass label Black Butter Records just keeps dropping essential bad boy material, like this latest from UK garage/grime/breaks producer Warrior One. Teamed up with singer Ayah Marar, he fuses together jungle beats running at 130bpm with nasty grime bass shots and swirling string textures on the dropouts. If you prefer an even tougher flex, Warrior One's own VIP mix in collaboration with Bojcat has got you covered, while mixes from Des Demure, Baxta and Io round off this stellar release.

Review:
Bristol-based Woz has a growing reputation in the bass music scene. Following a recent guest appearance on Mistajam's 1Xtra show, he's now ready to release some more original music (much of his back catalogue comprises remixes). Zylo sets out his stall, pitching him as a producer whose party instincts regularly take priority. There's much energetic dancefloor fare on offer, from the booming basslines, retro bleeps and scratchy breaks of "Fustraightin", to the woozy UK Funky flex of "Reach" and the stabbing bounce of the darting title track. Despite the balls-out nature of his style, there's enough depth to suggest there's more to come in future.
