Review: A producer steadily making a name for himself with dark and brooding dubstep aces on BoxClever, Biscuit Factory and N-Type's Wheel & Deal label, Benton knocks it out the park again with these two new rhythms on Blackbox. "Skeptics" is a seriously subtle throbber which winds together some killer ice snares along with dubby percussion over a murky, deep set of purple chords and eerie leads. "Thermo Stellar" on the flip adds some metal sheen to the leads whilst still maintaining a rocksteady half-step dread beat. Hypnotic, moody and very assured, these are two more reasons to start following Benton in a big way.

Review: Black Box continue their limited offshoot series with this epic track from Manchester's Biome. With heavy rotation on Rinse FM, "Space" is already rattling speaker stacks across the globe with its super deep subs and minimal beats. Cinematic pads and tinkling pianos are played off against spacey fx and tonnes of slowly mutating bass frequencies. Going deeper than a trawler's anchor, Biome retains the musicality but loses none of the impact. The true sound of dungeon dubstep.

Review: A pair of impressive collaborations from Commodo and Lurka, which utilise impressive production and an keen awareness of negative space to create two tracks that are sonically devastating yet display a real maturity. "Airtight" is dominated by a huge bassline that cuts through the mix, but it's the minimal samples that add the real character, utilising a sparing distorted cyborg-like vocal, and even a tense guitar lick which adds an intriguing moment of calm to the proceedings. "Gassin" utilises the same razor sharp bass, but with occasional snatches of a hollowed out female vocal, clattering percussion and laser synths combining to create a particularly foreboding atmosphere. Definitely a release to check out if you like your dubstep pure!

Review: One to watch with every release, Data brings it to Blackbox with stylish, stripped back utterance "Intrusion". The title track is every inch the brooding, menacing incarnation evoked by the title - think mid-90s Metalheadz vibes, with punchy drums, eerie SFX and enormous sub bass booms. The tension and ominous atmospherics continue for the duration as we are led further and further down the tunnel. The accompanying "Knives From Heaven" is an even more bewildering and intriguing piece with pattering percussion and a unique blend of sounds which will satisfy fans of more experimental electronica.

Review: Skeletal, cerebral sounds dominate in this four-track EP from Data on trendy and ever on-point label Blackbox. Quite literally making simple things into complex sounds, Data begins the EP with "Fall Of Phaeton" which is full of spitting, precisely enunciated hollow beats and an eerie, cooing atmosphere with whispering vox and mournful instrumentals. "Laid Bare" fights back with a more rigorous bassline workout, with crashing snares and withheld tension in the low-end pressure, whilst "The Construct" is all whirring bass and ominous wailing. "Disconnection" brings the EP to a close with an almost tribal patter and didgeridoo-esque b-line.

Review: Ever reliably true to the original dubstep sound, DJ Madd crops up on Black Box once again with four diverse yet uniformly bleak steppers. "Blank Space" rides a familiar beat, but gets offset nicely by an eerie refrain, while "Pitfall" keeps the same demeanour but puts a loping groove to work. The real fun to be had is on "Murder 96", which unsurprisingly harks back to classic jungle breaks. It's a cool and deadly assault, restrained in its execution but all the more nagging for it. EP closer "Ritual" lets a little more melody in courtesy of Phaeleh, with tidy results.

Review: Having spent the best part of honing his skills in Budapest and (briefly) Bristol, dubstep studio boffin DJ Madd presents his debut full-length, the decidedly murky The Real & The Shadow. Opening with the creepy, low-end strut of "The Real & The Shadow" itself, Madd delivers a set that variously alternates between dark room intensity, synth-laden creepiness and muscular, crowd-bating riddims. There are some notable diversions along the way - not least the soft-centred vocal cut "Deeply" and old skool rave-up "Junglist" - but these are merely odd moments of clarity amidst the paranoid, weed-stoked gloom (see the sonic paranoia of "The Life You Choose").

Review: Black Box do the smart thing and roll out "Arcane", one of the highlights of Can't Sleep, their second album length deviation into dubstep, for the single release it so rightly deserves. Produced in sync with Rinse stalwart Youngsta, "Arcane" positively ripples with 808 menace, with jagged subs constantly growling and threatening to bite amidst a backdrop of eerily reverberant sonics that tunnel deep into your thoughts. Review: Indomitable D&B-turned-dubstep duo Kryptic Minds made the switch (no pun intended - FYI one half of KM is Leon Switch) around 2009, with their debut album One Of Us dropping on Swamp 81. Now they return in 2011 with a refined version of their distinctive deep, dubbed out, minimal dubstep in their sophomore LP Cant Sleep. From the tense, ticking intro "Brief Passing" (feat. Alys Be) through such memorable cuts as the inky black pulverising sounds of "Just After Sunset" and vocal driven eponymous track "Cant Sleep" to the grand finale "The Fifth", it's a superb and cohesive selection.

Review: D&B-turned-dubstep duo Kryptic Minds seem to have somewhat of a predisposition towards the darker shades of dubstep with their trademark murky basslines, inky black soundscapes, haunting vocals and deep dubs. "Make You Sleep" is no exception to the rule; employing Emika's whispering lyrical prowess with heavy, solipsistic bass and rolling subs, it's another superb venture, building hype for the release of their album, due out later this year (we can't wait!) Up next, insomnia troubling cut "Can't Sleep" (feat. Alys Be) continues the vibe with more contemplative, melodic blissed out music from the pair, rounding the release off to perfection.

Review: A deliciously dubbed out, bass heavy beauty coming from the Blackbox camp once again, this time from Las. Aptly named title track "Power Surge" is a subtle, yet electrically charged cut with twinkling synth flourishes, thudding, chugging b-line and an aurora of threat and menace. The Desto remix strips it back and rids itself of the malaise, instead replacing thick, heavy atmospherics with curious pepperings of sci-fi SFX; beats are more delicate and enunciated and the drums less thudding and more inquisitive. A lovely package all together.

Review: Another excellent release on Chemical Records' affiliated imprint, Blackbox, from the hotly tipped Lurka. "Tempted" begins with a melange of echoes and textured SFX and proceeds into a classic lurching halfstep venture, with treacly rhythms, reverberations a-plenty and buckets of menacing bass ribbits. As previewed on Rinse FM, if you like your Hatcha, Distance and N-Type style riddims then this is undoubtedly one for you, as Lurka melds the enticing bass weight with head nodding ability, making it a classic 3am stomper. Part of the Black Box XXX series, it's a collector's dream, no question.

Review: Taking it back to the roots, with the heavy dubbed out flavours that characterize the genre way back when in the early noughties, old Croydon compadres N-Type and Cyrus team up for a 12" that just oozes bass weight. In "Dark Frequency" they employ a menacing echoing vocal sample, which serves to emphasize the inky black b-line and lurching rhythms and pummelling sub bass. In "Conscious", things are taken down a more pared down route, with psychological utterances, tribal drums and a grizzled moving b-line, almost reminiscent of early Skream in fact. One for fans of Youngsta, Loefah and Hatcha.

Review: Any Black Box release is always a sure sign of quality in the world of dubstep, and this pair of tracks from the label's XXX offshoot see established Bristol producer Phaeleh and rising talent DJ Madd indulge in a remix swap. First up, DJ Madd reworks "Lament" from Phaeleh's brilliant album, Fallen Light, adding a huge bassline and taking the cinematic original into the club. Phaeleh, meanwhile, does the opposite on his remix of Madd's Pitfall, softening some of its rougher edges and bringing a new beauty to it, along with rolling percussion which transforms the stop-start nature of the original.
