Review:
Tears End is one of those releases that makes a reviewer's job difficult. Inhabiting a grey area between minimal house, Kompakt's glittering trance and 90s deep house, it stands out from the deluge of cookie cutter releases. The title track sees stripped back beats providing the backing for a dreamy, subtly filtered chord sequence. Midway through, the rhythm changes and the track goes into a stepping, stop-start direction. Hiyama pushes further in this direction on "Ice Nine", where brittle off beats support the dreamy melodies. But it's "Her Hourglass" that stands out most; comprising acidic bleeps, slivers of vocal samples and a stepping rhythm, it comes across like mid-90s Ian Pooley trying to do a modern day Shed track.
