Review: Headed by Greek producer and supreme beat-head George Fotiadis, these four nu-funk bombs under his Basement Freaks moniker mixes up live production with samples in the vein of the titular hero, J Dilla. "Here Comes Our Dilla" mixes cop-show guitars and clavs with a flute that sit on top of the tune like a glace cherry on a cupcake. "Mission Jazz" does a neat trick by combining James Brown's "Funky President" beat with a bossa nova sway, while the Godfather gets further recognition on "Soul Men" which kicks off with a JB-style "are you ready?" intro from the band. "Boogaloo Express" alone is worth snapping up the EP for though - a lively Northern Soul stomper that'll never go out of style.

Review: Basement Freaks' jazzy hip-hop swinger "Mission Jazz" gets a thorough remix package on this latest release from Bombastic Jam. Review: Originally released in 2006, Basement Freaks' full-length album finally gets a download release for the first time. A sophisticated mix of styles - afro jazz, bossa, funk and Latin grooves - all get given a chilled, slightly dubby treatment as songs like "Duru People", "Belezza Makonia" and "Nova Monkeys" mix live playing and studio beats. Review: Just weeks have passed since Bombastic Jam let loose with the Basement Freaks remix album and they're up to their antics again with this tremendously funky EP from the Moguls. "Block Rockin" is instant party with a playful vocal chant, a killer electro bassline and some excellently executed use of the six string. "Backfire" struts with a low swung Shaft vibe and a killer sample taken from cult film Kill The Moonlight (which, incidentally, inspired a well-known Beck lyric). "B-Boy" picks up the tempo with a string-drenched disco hook and scratch vocal sample that wouldn't have gone amiss on early Freestylers records. For added badboy thrills, head to the grand finale as Basement Freaks remixes "Block Rockin", giving it just a touch of growl and gristle.

Review: Believe it or not, this 12 track boogie attack is actually an EP! Shimmying its way into your lugholes with nu funk gusto, it sounds much more like an album to us. And a ruddy good album, to boot. One minute it's all about the slap bass popping, the next we see the b-boys rocking, Jayl's all-encompassing party remit is accessible and far reaching. We can't list all 12 cuts here, but for a sense of Jayl's variety and sonic scope head for the low-swung, early Kraak & Smaakesque soul shock out "Everybody" and the deep percussive house shakedown "The Last Night". Review: Since releasing their first album in 2007, Greek band Quasamodo (AKA The Q Orchestra) have become funk scene stalwarts. Following albums for Timewarp and Freestyle, here they jump ship to funk breaks specialists Bombastic Jam. It's a good move. While "Movin On" is nowhere near as bombastic as many of the label's releases, it retains a sharp dancefloor focus. Musically, the Quasamodo sound is pleasingly bright and breezy, offering strong songs (backed with fantastic vocal performances) that fuse a consciously laidback approach to funk and soul with disco, rock and jazz-funk influences.
