Review:
Funk technician Basement Freaks teams up with Danish nu-funk legend Badboe for the first in this series of hook ups for excellent funk 'n' breaks label Bombastic Jam. "Suck Up The Thrill" rides a tight Moog bassline and a loose funk beat and features the P-Funk-esque vocals of Georges Perin, while "Boomshakala" comes in on a more old skool hip-hop vibe, with singer/rapper Lozen spitting rhymes over a chilled yet punchy mix of sampled breaks and gritty live funk-rock guitars.

Review:
"I'm Waiting" sings Nneka. Do you know what she's waiting for? A Basement Freaks D&B remix of course. And now it's here... And it's a pretty big deal. Basement Freaks is usually known for his antics lower down the tempo scale but he's come through with an expert impression of someone who knows the intricacies of drum and bass production techniques. Funky, cheeky and riddled with texture, he's captured that remix gold star - making it sound like the vocals were made for his version alone. Just in case you're not feeling the vocal, head directly to the instrumental - it's equally funky and works well as a cool DJ tease, mixing it in with the vocal version. What are you waiting for?

Review:
All 14 tracks on this second volume of Basement Freaks remixes from the ever reliable Bombastic Jam are all bona fide party pieces; from Jazz K Lippa's Fiddy-fiddling D&B remake of "Tetris Dub" to Pimpsoul's b-boy, block-rock version of "Something Freaky" via Some DJ's supremely sludgy rub of "Bootyfunk" this album is testament to true remix art.

Review:
Headed by Greek producer and supreme beat-head George Fotiadis, these four nu-funk bombs under his Basement Freaks moniker mixes up live production with samples in the vein of the titular hero, J Dilla. "Here Comes Our Dilla" mixes cop-show guitars and clavs with a flute that sit on top of the tune like a glace cherry on a cupcake. "Mission Jazz" does a neat trick by combining James Brown's "Funky President" beat with a bossa nova sway, while the Godfather gets further recognition on "Soul Men" which kicks off with a JB-style "are you ready?" intro from the band. "Boogaloo Express" alone is worth snapping up the EP for though - a lively Northern Soul stomper that'll never go out of style.

Review:
A more electronic sound from Basement Freaks on this new EP for Bombastic Jam, as he fuses together a sinister synth lead line with some huge bass sounds on the Missy Elliot-sampling "Booty Funk". His trademark cut 'n' paste funk is still present though on songs like the bold and brassy "Cash Money" (featuring a superbly jazzy vocal from singer Georges Perin). Killer!

Review:
Basement Freaks' jazzy hip-hop swinger "Mission Jazz" gets a thorough remix package on this latest release from Bombastic Jam. While the original makes great use of trip-hoppy brass samples and itchy guitars, Serbian beat heads Hain Terry add a perfect smoky vocal over the top of the beat while Renegades of Jazz replay the original in a '50s exotica style that would make Henry Mancini and Les Baxter proud.

Review:
Compared to his more upbeat party sizzlers, this single from prolific nu-funkster Basement Freaks' album Something Freaky is pretty subdued, with more of a cool funk-meets-hip-hop groove and flow. With fun playground style lyrics, it's the type of tune that really worms into you without you realising. There's some really interesting remix action on offer, too; AfroQben adds some squidgy bass beef, Suzbilla gets more of a 4/4 stomp on, throwing in some cool funk breaks on the fills and putting more of a psychedelic twist to the bass. D End, meanwhile, gets a bit freaky with a jaunty skank and yet a bassline that wouldn't sound amiss on a two-step record.

Review:
Treading the fine line between authentic old school homage while offering something original is a hard challenge... Thankfully Basement Freaks and Timothy Wisdom have nailed it. Conjuring up the spirit of Two Live Crew, Young MC and Sugar Hill, Timothy delivers with true clarity and character over BF's superfly slap-bass riff. It's a match made in funk heaven. The remix line-up is more than healthy with all styles catered. Highlights include the percussion ripples on Jayl Funk's re-rub and the smoochy sonics on Slynk's deeper remake.

Review:
Just weeks have passed since Bombastic Jam let loose with the Basement Freaks remix album and they're up to their antics again with this tremendously funky EP from the Moguls. "Block Rockin" is instant party with a playful vocal chant, a killer electro bassline and some excellently executed use of the six string. "Backfire" struts with a low swung Shaft vibe and a killer sample taken from cult film Kill The Moonlight (which, incidentally, inspired a well-known Beck lyric). "B-Boy" picks up the tempo with a string-drenched disco hook and scratch vocal sample that wouldn't have gone amiss on early Freestylers records. For added badboy thrills, head to the grand finale as Basement Freaks remixes "Block Rockin", giving it just a touch of growl and gristle.
