Review:
Known as a fierce collector of hip-hop, funk soul and much more, DJ Chris Read has not only represented 1Xtra but has also curated compilations for BBE in the past. That weight of musical knowledge passes nicely into his studio work, as this latest double-tracker for Breakin' Bread shows. With afrobeat to the fore, "Sons D'Afrique" is an addictive mix of beats, boogie bass, African guitar licks and billowing brass, with a simple joyous vocal and chant wafting gently through the tune. "Dub D'Afrique" as you'd expect breaks out the echo effects for a deeper and driving alternative which makes great use of a floating flute part as well as some fine bass and drum work.

Review:
The man behind the b-boy anthem "Gypsy Rock" is back with two new superior funk 'n' breaks slammers on the Breaking Bread label. Recalling the stark early drums of DJ Shadow, lead tune "The Stone Garden" mixes MPC drum arrangements with a stew of sampled brass hits and effortlessly funky guitars, while "Iron Horse" sounds like a mix between Dennis Coffey and the Incredible Bongo Band, replete with some vicious Hammond organ stabs and a driving bassline. Check out his debut album The Rhythm Den if this floats your boat.

Review:
A leading light on breaks-tinged funk label Breaking Bread, UK producer Para's take on cut 'n' paste hip-hop has led to gems like 2009's "Rescue Me". Here however, he tackles Otis' epitaph with a more downbeat vibe - using Hammond organs and pianos to drive the song along, as well as some trademark funky drum loops of course. More upbeat however is the swooning psych-pop of B-Side "The Night That Stole My Mind" - check out the hypnotic, Can-like groove and the beautifully swirling guitar solo especially.

Review:
A pair of excellent drummers come together for Breaking Bread's Drums Series, where new breaks are forged in tribute to the classic funk/soul/rock breaks of yore. Howe and Claydon join forces with members of The Killer Meters on the excellent 'The Claydon Break" which recalls the epic soul-rock of Dennis Coffey and needles to say is packed with beautifully recorded raw, fatback drums. On a more psych tip, "Cosmic Exotica" disappears into deep, spacey territory with some gloriously library-esque Moogs providing an astral drive to the already hypnotic groove.

Review:
Part of the Breakin' Bread's "Drums Series", two experimentalists and studio dons - Virgil Howe and Shawn Lee - cook up some live breaks and funky sci-fi Moogs for this excellent single. With the aim of the series to get producers to abandon loops and sequencers and produce all their beats live, the pair work up a storming LCD meets Dennis Coffey break that is enlivened with some tight psych-electro melodies. "Go Go Gadget Break" is possibly even better - strongly and gloriously recalling the "Go-Go" sound of early '80s acts such as Trouble Funk and the Junkyard Band.
