Dope by Lebrosk on Cult Music Cue Track
Lebrosk - "Dope" (tOtALcULt remix) - (5:37) 110 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Producers Lebrosk and Totalcult go head to head on this new EP from Cult Music - dropping originals then remixing each others funky breaks. Lebrosk throws down a natty set of breaks on "Dope", with a nagging wah-guitar sample taking the lead along with acapella cuts from Dimples D's "Sucker DJ's" among others. Totalcult slows things down a few notches while incorporating beats from Uptown's classic "Dope On Plastic" on his mix, while his own "Raging Horn" uses the horns from Blood, Sweat and Tears' "Lucretia MacEvil" to devastating, ass-shaking effect. Lebrosk meanwhile adds some filter and speeds it up into a jacking breaks worker on his version.

Review: Midlands funk peddler Totalcult isn't one for looking on the past with rose-tinted glasses (boom, tish). Instead he likes to take the vibes of grooves past and weld them to sturdy modern production techniques. This album is full of vintage flavours married to tough beats, deep bass and a fair share of rapping to boot, as evidenced on the breaky "Tica Tok Rocker", the bouncey "Bob Ya Head" and the splendidly-titled "Undisputed Banger".

Review: These days with all this 'is it a movie or is it a video game' shenanigans a la Call of Duty, it's sometimes nice to just go back to the old skool, to the days of Donkey Kong, where life was simple and video games simply entailed the player having to jump over pixelated barrels to save the day. Here Totalcult have done the same thing musically, delivering some raw and crackley old-skool funk grooves, albeit with some tough-but-subtle modern beats. After all, how long before musical barrel jumping gets boring, eh?

Review: This should be considered something of a treat for funk breaks fans. In a bid to raise funds for the Love Music, Hate Racism charity, it gathers together tracks from both heavy hitters (Badboe, Fort Knox Five, Zamali etc) and lesser-known talents on one action-packed compilation. If this kind of party-rocking fun is your thing, it should be an essential purchase, not least because it includes some fine material. Check in particular Super Combo Funk's trad funk/P-funk fusion "I Don't Need No Dope", PulpFusion's fuzzy "Rockin Kids" and the wobble-step influenced "Boob Job" from Bristolian Ewan Hoozami, who happens to be the son of former England rugby player Alistair Hignell.

Review: Previously released on Actress' Werk Discs in 2008 as a CD and digital release, this now seminal debut from Zomby finds itself getting a reissue courtesy of the producer's freshly minted Cult Music imprint. Taking jungle, hardcore and 90s rave, Zomby fuses them into a hyperreal energy rush, filled with laser guided salvos of piano stabs and airhorns. Four years since its release it's still a peerless album - if you've yet to familiarise yourself with the world of Zomby, this album is no less than essential.
