Review:
Gabriel Roth's and Neal Sugarman's Daptone Records label have been a shining beacon in funk music for almost ten years. Launched off the back of the incredible Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings, they've both reached the mainstream via work for Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse and simultaneously kept their core, vinyl-loving fans on board too. This twenty track best of really is an essential purchase for anyone that's slept on classic releases such as the Otis-recalling Charles Bradley's "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)", Sharon Jones' popcorn favourite "Got A Thing On My Mind", Bob's slow and deeply soulful "Gotta Find A Way" and the mighty instrumental force of the Poets of Rhythm, here marked by their cover of that evergreen US rock classic, "Suzie Q".

Review:
A pearl in Daptone Records' roster of retro and revivalist funk players, Charles Bradley is a phenomenal singer - strongly reminiscent of Otis Redding - with an incredible, Stax-like backing from the Menahan Street Band. Following on the heels of his fantastic debut LP, No Time For Dreaming, comes this cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" - fleshed out into a full-band affair with brass and Bradley's gravel-gargling voice wrapping itself around Young's vocal perfectly. Album track "In You" makes for a great b-side accompaniment with it's spooked, Mickey and the Soul Generation-vibe.

Review:
An act that have succeeded in creating their own distinct niche in modern funk music, through many years of perseverance and thousands of sweat-drenched shows, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings returned to the studio with force this year for "Show Time!", a twelve-track lesson in how to evoke JB, Texan funk and '60s soul in style. Two part opener "Genuine" sets the tone, with Jones' huge vocals soaring over a complex yet groovesome rhythm, while the slower Philly balladeering of "Longer And Stronger" acts as a nice break from the paced-up popcorn funk. Best of all though is their stunning, rootsy cover of Shuggie Otis' incredible "Inspiration Information". Truly worth the price of the album alone.
