Dub techno has become one of the most imitated electronic sounds, but its practitioners rarely reach the heights scaled by Basic Channel or later on, Claro Intelecto and the Modern Love roster. On Red Rome, Cloned does a decent job of signalling a new chapter in its development. In its original format, "Red Rome" is a gradually unfolding groove, its textured chords and clanking percussion leading the languid groove. The 'Chords Speak For Themselves' version is more laid back still, predicated on spacey chords and what could be a sample from an old hardcore track. That said, there are clubby versions on the release; the Vermona take is based on stepping rhythms, while the 909 mix is a highly effective, rolling jacker.
