Review: Fans of Tiger and Woods and Soundstream would do well to check this latest disco/house cut-up from the Degustibus camp. Like the greatest works from those esteemed producers, "Gattone" is an exercise in loop manipulation, working the same few elements - compressed, filter-heavy grooves from an old disco banger, the odd vocal snippet, some string-laden stabs - for seven hypnotic minutes. It's perhaps not as refined as Soundstream or Tiger and Woods, but it's pretty tasty. "Kikujiro", on the other hand, sticks closer to the source material, attractively playing around with a cheeky disco-funk groover to ensure maximum dancefloor effect.

Review: The only common theme that emerges on this release is its sense of unpredictability. The first version of "N1", by Recubierto, is a stomping, tracky affair, its dense pounding drums and a wall of spiky percussion giving way, almost inexplicably, to deep house flutes and a more understated, skipping rhythm. It's a similar story on the Despejado version, even though the approach is less intense; the same jazzy flutes come in over dense, albeit more understated drums, but then the arrangement breaks down into bird song and feather light ambient sounds. The final track, "Aguja" offers merely a snippet of white noise.
