DUBSTAR 034
10 Sep 12 Dirty/Heavy Dubstep/Grime
Played by: Juno Recommends Dubstep
Review:
Little, if anything, is known about The Argonauts, but Croydon's Dubstar records have built up a good reputation for supporting forward-thinking dubstep so we'll take their vote of confidence. "Bun Dem" is a hypnotic example of trippy techno-step at its finest: a repetitive electronic riff pounds on and on while an MC chants above nagging beats. "Quiet Place" sees stop-start beats combine with humourous audio samples and wobbly bass for a head-noddingly good time. Finally g-funk hip-hop beats give way to junglist rhythms and heavy bass on EP closer, "Sendout".

"WTF": an acronym that's saturated modern day parlance so much we say it at the most mundane of times, everyone's all like "Ooh look, I've found a penny. WTF!" and "Wow, I'm in the rain and getting wet. WTF!" Well Chaddy Dubz is bringing WTF back its original shock value - warping and wheezing with the power of a nuclear doomsday device, it genuinely will make you gasp the truest WTF you've done in years. And if you think that's ugly, jump on "Pissed Off". Your WTF meter will actually explode.

Review:
Expect the unexpected and you might be prepared, or so they say. Well such is the case with this intriguing release from Headah Freaq on the Dubstar label. Presenting a trio of tracks all with their individual sound stamped firmly into them, first of all Headah Freq get the party started with "Get Up" which blends gentle chiming SFX and breakdowns with more aggressive electro stabbing sounds, squeaky, glitch beats and snatches of threatening vocal samples. Next is "Wankstarz" which continues the filth with grouchy bass, groaning midrange and some occasional string sections. Last but definitely not least is "Sinister Future" with its ominous intro, juddering beats and eerie atmospherics, it finishes the EP off in style.

Funny story! Hitman chose this name because if things didn't work out for him in the bass world, he would become a real gun-toting hit man. Actually, that's not a funny story; that's a sad story... But one with a cracking ending. Hitman has made it in the bass world. "Strange Happenings" is a fine example of his sonic success; the bass proudly croaks and gurgles over a dominant half step that salutes to dubstep's formative days with a classic swagger. "Against The Clock" reveals a more frantic, techno-inspired Hitman with persistent loops and an overall manic vibe. "Mad Dog" finishes the set with yet more 'vintage' dubstep flavours. Listen closely, you can actually hear him tearing up his hit man application in the background.

Review:
Dutch dubster Jadez makes his debut and it's a vicious statement of intent. "The Swarm" is 100 per cent gnarls and angular square waves, guaranteed to cause some serious hype on the floor. "Snake Pit" takes us deeper into the pit with a grumpier series of lower-toned bass licks that bubble down into a collection of depraved wobbles while "Exile" ends on a jauntier note with more swing on the halfstep and humour in the bass melodies. A perfect addition to the Dubstar stable; Jadez will sing volumes to fans of Hench and Dub Police. Nasty!

Review:
Smoking sonic savagery from Estonian badman Kalimist right here: "Hedbanger" is a metallic wasp-like buzzer with a nagging, incessant, loopy riff. Listen out for the drums mid-way: loose and live-sounding they add a nice slice of funk to proceedings. "Megaquake", meanwhile, oozes a much more extended, lingering sense of doom while the final track leaves us on a vibro-skank high.

Review:
If you like your dubstep fairly sparse but also grouchy and synth-driven then this three-tracker from Subfiltronik on the Dubstar imprint may well float your boat. Opening cut "Motion Frequency" builds from a disorientating intro of thumps, kicks and bleeps and grizzled synths into the main tune. It never really seems to settle, which is somehow most of the appeal. "Party Killers" channels an early Caspa-meets-Skream with a twist, with hissing SFX and midway breakdowns, and grinding synths and mid range belches. "Odd Fuse" brings things to a close via a series of sliding grating SFX and thudding snares.

It's been a breakthrough year for new dubstep act Unnatural Forces with killer singles on both Dub Cartel and Dubstar. Here they hook up with Skoop to round off 2012 with brace of ugly bass-bitten bangers. "Bass" is a really interesting lead track with a loop vocal that give consistency to the bottom end mayhem at play elsewhere in the track. "Make Me" is total half-step darkness designed strictly for peaktime antics. Instant re-load vibes on both the original and twisted VIP, this will cause major dancefloor meltdowns.

Review:
Up for some utter filth? Sure you are. Which is quite fortunate really, as Uzzi are coated in the muckiest bass grease you ever did see. Contenders for a Best Greek Import award, these Tessaloniki badboys are kicking out the high-end wobble riffs likes it's still 2007; screaming, confrontational and primed for the heaviest of floors, each of these three cuts will cause major tremors. Handle with care!

Review:
Dubstar deals strictly in confrontational, uncompromising dubstep. And long may they do so with brain-tickling warp attacks like this! Here we find Londoner Thiago Macedo going all-out with a trio of industrial strength hurters; the gene-referencing "C-3P1" is like a metallic lion's roar playing forward and back over broken glass halfsteps, "Ironlak" takes more textured looped growl and thrusts it into space while "Intruders" finishes on a funkier note with wet echoed drums and big synth splashes over a guttural croak-like bass riff.
