Originally a garage banger back in 1996, Somore's "I Refuse" now returns in the shape of ten contemporary remixes. French neo-garage hero Phil Weeks combines the original vocals with a chunky house backdrop, The "RIP Deep Dub" takes right back to the mid 90s speed garage days and Industry Standard take the tune back even further for a Nightcrawlers-sound. On a less retro tip, Serious Danger take the song in a doom-step direction a la Burial and Wayne's Strip Down mix, reduces the track to vocals and sparse, sensual beats.
MoreSo - "Take My Hand" (Industry Standard remix) - (6:04) 131 BPM
Richard Les Crees - "The Sign" (Todd Edwards UK Sign remix) - (6:21) 132 BPM
All aboard the retro train, we're heading straight for the heart of the 90s with I! Black Label's latest compilation of vintage garage sounds. They've unearthed some long-forgotten gems too: Somore and Damon Trueitt's "I Refuse" was originally spun back in '97 and it's an infectious slice of handbaggy stuff a la Robin S or Nightcrawlers. We also get Todd Edwards' trippy house take of a Trueitt tune, and the campy, jazzy fun of "Take My Hand", but it's the, dreamy, almost Saint Etienne-esque bliss-house of Richard Les Crees' "The Sign" that's really stood the test of time.
