Review:
Those of you out there who dig eclectic retro jazz outfit, The Unity Sextet, will already be familiar with their keyboard whizz, Fat Thumbs Ronnie. Having recently made a big splash with his day job band, Ronnie now turns his er, fat thumbs, to his own debut solo effort. Once again recruiting producer Lack Of Afro, the Bristolian ivory tinkler has delivered an accomplished 11-track set that touches on breezy jazz ("A Tenuous Link"), 60s retro ("The Playhouse") and laid-back funk ("Building Bridges").

South Londoner soul and funk producers JetTricks reach their second album in style, with Better Than Real Life sounding bigger and broader, thanks to a wide-range of guest vocalists over the12 tracks. Faye Houston makes a spine-tingling contribution on the epic and stirring opener "Home", while more traditional slinky nu-funk is represented on tracks like "I'm Going Back" and "Stephanie" (featuring Shawn Lee). Former Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan lends his drawling NYC vocals on the excellent "See Us Through" too.

Review:
South London production team JetTricks have scored a home run on this one-off release - a cover of The O'Jays' timeless "For The Love of Money". The duo, who have collaborated with many different musicians over the past few years have even hooked up Fun Lovin' Criminals' Huey Morgan to play a blistering solo over the tune, which keeps things on the live, raw and funky side and features vocals from Detroit legend Marcus Malone.

Review:
Last time we checked, you could get arrested for certain kerbside collections. Jokes like that probably didn't occur to Brisbane jazz-funk outfit Kerbside Collection when recording this debut album. Largely because they were escaping the 2011 freak floods that devastated their home town. However they rose above the odds and laid these tracks down the old fashioned way (recorded all together in a room- warts and all) including a gritty jazz funk George Benson cover ("P Park"), a jazz/reggae number ("Red Stripe") and a cool jazz dance cover of a John Coltrane classic ("Impressions").

Review:
Little is known about this release other than it's a re-issue of an obscure disco-era record by a group of Christians based in Michigan. The Last Generation is a Seventh-day Adventist belief system of overcoming sin before the second coming of Jesus Christ, or something. We don't know much about the theology, but "Just A Chance In Life" is a killer glittery disco-soul workout and that's good enough for us. "You're All I Need" is a more subdued, deeper groove - less glitter but just as classy nonetheless.

Not wanting to slow his relentless momentum, Mr Confuse is back in town, all guns blazing and clutching a remixed version of his recent LP, "Do You Realise". All 12 tracks are given a reboot from a variety of producers, highlights of which include the electro-funky big beat of Smoove's remix of ""Catch Me", the totally bonkers Bootsy Collins-esque Funkanomics remix of "Hold On" and the luxuriantly exotic Przasnik remix of "Big Livin".

Review:
The third single from Mr. Confuse's Feel The Fire LP puts the Latin-shaped nu-funk of "Imovel" in the spotlight, backed by some great new remixes of other album tracks. Germany's Mr. C fixes Cuban guitars with rambunctious brass over a heavy funk beat on his original, while Australian producer Rephrase switches up rhythms on his mix - creating a jazzy D&B over which he layers the brass beautifully. Thomas Blondet also goes on a jazzy journey on his new mix of the soulful "It's Just a Blues", while the salsa-core of "The Arrrgh Theme" gets a lilting retooling from swing-master Alan de Laniere.

Review:
After "Catch Me", the first single from Mr Confuse's new LP Do You Realize, comes this excellent funky follow up. "Too Hot" boasts a '60s Hammond organ going wild over rock hard hip-hop drums, and, the crowning touch: the tag-team vocals of soul singer Elaine Thomas and Dan Salem. Up next, "Why Can't You See Me" sees the tempo notched up high as a brass section and wah wah guitar duke it over some conga-fuelled funk rhythms.

A ten-strong funk powerhouse, The Impellers are full of popcorn funk fun on this full-length release for Legere Records. Putting their own spin on the styles of Sly, JB, Marva and the rest, they even tear apart The Ting-Tings' "That's Not My Name" brilliantly on their sweaty, Dap Tone-recalling cover version.

Review:
Having put out something close to twenty 45s, toured Europe extensively and already dropped one successful album, German deep funk freaks The Mighty Mocambos return with this, their second excellent LP instalment. Led by London-based singer Gizelle Smith, the band are stuffed to the gills with excellent brass players and copious percussionists to achieve that big '70s Afro/Latin sound (as on opener "Calling The Shots"). On top of that, hip hop's founding father Afrika Bambaataa is present and correct on a couple of tunes, while the slow Franco-funk of "Physique" (featuring Parisian singer Caroline Lacaze) might just be out favourite on this excellent album.

Review:
Leeds-based funk fourpiece The New Mastersounds have been beavering away, bashing out the boogaloo since way back in 1999. In that time, they've release around 10 albums of original material and a dizzying array of singles. This second "Introduction" - read 'best of' - from Germany's Legere Recordings collects together hits, B-sides, live tracks and killer album jams from the Yorkshire band's career to date. Those unfamiliar with the New Mastersounds' approach would do well to dive in, because it offers a great summary of what they're all about (i.e killer instrumental and vocal funk, soul, jazz-funk and boogaloo in a revivalist style).
