Review: Warrington-based 1980s obsessive Danny "80s Child" Worrall tends to eschew the obvious, delivering re-edits of '80s soul jams and overproduced, mid-'80s electrofunk curiosities. He's at it again here, dropping five more soulful, synth-laden nuggets for the Midnight Riot label. There's some saucer-eyed '80s soul in the shape of the touchy-feely "Missing", some gigantic, radio-friendly synth-rock ("Control"), and a dash of deliciously smooth, slow-dance fare ("Kiss U"). Better still is the New Jack Swing-flavoured dayglo rush of "Be Together", and "All Alone", a riotous electrofunk jam built around a familiar bassline and Shep Pettibone style drum edits.

Review: Warrington-based 80s Child is turning into a one-man re-edit machine, delivering floor-friendly touch-ups of synth-heavy electrofunk, 80s soul and boogie jams on a regular basis. There's naturally much to admire about this third EP for regular home Midnight Riot, from the rolling boogie-house revision of stone cold classic "Flashback" - all carefully cultivated loops, filters and metronomic pulse - to the chiming synthesizer melodies, vocal breakdowns and delay-laden drums of "This Love". Arguably best of all, though, is the heavyweight swing, looped vocals and killer synth bass flex of "Run From My Love", one of his strongest rubs to date.

Review: Following a pair of well-received outings on Ruben & Ra's Retrospective imprint, 1980s re-edit specialist Danny Worrall pops up on Midnight Riot with another five-track collection of electrofunk rubs. There's plenty of party-starting fodder on show, from the bustling horns and rubbery grooves of opener "Make You Mine" to the Prince style Purple Funk throb of "Hot", and shiny synths and looped vocals of "My Future is Clear". Arguably best of all, though, is the sumptuous '80s soul re cut "Secret Love". There's also a version of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That", though it barely changes the original's winning formula.

Review: Warrington's Danny Worral has carved out a niche for himself delivering robust, floor-friendly re-edits that specifically rework synth-laden '80s electrofunk, soul and boogie jams. Here he presents his first album of reworks for regular home Midnight Riot. The source material is a mixture of the well known and slightly obscure, with the likes of the Whispers, Prince and the Aleems under the scalpel. Worral keeps the feel of the original tracks - including, in most cases, the vocals - giving them a little more contemporary dancefloor swing, largely thanks to extra-fat beats, subtle house rhythms and thick synth basslines. It's an attractive proposition for anyone who enjoys synth-laden '80s jams. Highlights are plentiful, from the glassy-eyed fun of the title track through to the soulful house shuffle of closer "In Your Life".

Review: Guildford-based Bad Barbie and Evil Smarty first joined forces in the autumn of 2014, releasing an EP of sleazy disco and funk re-edits for French Kiss Recordings. Here they join Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint, delivering a quartet of disco-reggae re-edits drenched in dub delay, spiralling special effects and subtle additional percussion. Particularly potent is the stretched out, dubbed-out "Get Enough", an excellent rework of a classic reggae cover of Michael Jackson, while "My Bell" layers Anita Ward's famous vocal over a nu-disco tinged dub house backing. The package also includes a future summer sing-along - a tasty revision of a reggae version of Chic's "I Want Your Love".

Review: Those who follow Belabouche on SoundCloud will know just what a prodigious re-editor he is; not a week seems to pass without a clutch of new scalpel works from the talented Italian producer. Here he brings his effortlessly soulful, loose-limbed approach to Yam Who's Midnight Riot label for the first time. All five tracks are excellent, with the baggy, string-drenched disco-soul bump of "Slide Into Your Heart" and dubwise funk thrust of "Money Runner" standing out. He mixes up the tempos well, with the EP's two slower moments - the sinewy jazz-funk headiness of "Open Your Mind" and intoxicating, horn-heavy "The Way We Live" - being particularly potent. If you're after edits that match dancefloor chops with an easy soulfulness, this should be an essential purchase.

Review: B-Jam hasn't time to worry about single titles; he's too busy on a furious retro funk mission for all that shizzle to matter. Unsurprisingly, the 8 Track EP features eight tracks, all deeply rooted in the glorious heyday of disco funk. Highlights include the bonkers filtered flute-a-thon "Europa Ensemble", the Earth, Wind & Fire on serious downers of "Fantasy Trip" and the frankly amazingly titled "Flame Roasted Falcons".

This Jump EP contains four retro-futuristic joints all of which are culled from only the most neon lit of '80s dancefloors. Highlights include the chopped up robo-funk "Jump", the slow and low, leather tracksuited bassy grind "You're The One" and the tougher, electronic rare groover "Melody".

Review: Unheralded re-edit master Chewy Rubs pops up on Midnight Riot with four more tried-and-tested chunks of discoid gold. The rubbery, delay-laden boogie of "Universal Love" - think slap-bass, echoing vocal samples, synth squiggles and shuffling house drums - kicks things off, before "Party On & Get Down" successfully rearranges a smooth disco-funk shuffler. There's a dash of subdued disco bounce in the shape of "I'll Tell You", before "Let It Lay" delivers the knock-out punch - a righteous chunk of squidgy P-funk with just the right amount of delay-laden low-slung disco flavour. All four tracks are expertly teased and tweaked, suggesting they'll prove popular on disco floors over the next few months.

Review: Combining tech house with a disco sound may not seem an obvious pairing, but that is where this London producer is coming from, and he does it extremely well. "Thru The Night" is dreamy, housed up, electro-soul, "Truth" adds trancey gospel to the mix and "Love Sunday" sprinkles some spaced out disco dust on the Cherille/Alexander O'Neal classic Saturday Love. It's all mesmerising snowflakes-at-night deep and electro-house on "If U Want Me". "Pressure" is fluffy clouds o'clock - all blissed out electro-pop- whilst "Your Girl" ends things on a haunting disco high.

Review: Although known as a nu-disco re-edit label, Midnight Riot regularly prefers the synthy, glitzy soul side of the '80s. No problem there, as much of that stuff crossed over to the disco side of things in that wonderful era of musical cross-pollination. Leading the charge is "Touch Of Magic", which basically takes all the best bits of Rose Royce's 1984 tropical synth-soul gem Magic Touch and makes it ten times better, Elsewhere we get a further five more slices of this shizzle including the deep, almost Balearic "Paradise" and the totally buggin' freak funk of "Taxis In Space".

Sophisticated boogie!

Review: Following on from their recent label compilation Midnight Riot are already back with more. This time label stalwart Justin 'GG' Green takes a break from partner JJ to go it alone on this solo EP. There are four tracks here, all celebratory with serious retro vibes - "Tin Top" is brassy funk with proto rap vocals, "Its Over" is your classic string laden yearning disco, the amusingly titled "Love Insurance" keeps with the strings but is more melancholic funk and "Get Down" wraps things up on a more up-tempo inspirational groove.

Review: Scalpel fiend Justin Green dons his GG Edits guise for another outing on Midnight Riot, some 10 months on from his last outing. As usual, there's much for dusty-fingered crate diggers to enjoy. Opener "Never Danced" is an undulating, string-laden disco singalong, with Green getting just the right balance between the bold vocals and extended instrumental passages. "So In Love" is a loose, baggy and hugely enjoyable extension of a familiar soul classic, while "Don't You Want Me (Minnie Extension)" takes a trip into the world of rare groove and '80s soul, adding some booming - if pleasingly swinging - percussion to cater for the needs of 21st century dancefloors.

Review: Another week, another new set of high grade re-edits from the Midnight Riot label. This time round, label boss Yam Who hands a debut to Stafford-based Dave Gerrard and Rob Bairstow's Greyskooledits project. Predictably, they head straight for peaktime dancefloors with opener "Saving My Love In", a brilliantly cut-up, hustlin' rework of a well-known disco classic. They dip the tempo a little on "Hesitate", impeccably stretching out and tweaking Salsoul Orchestra's "Runaway" for modern dancefloors. Even better is "Definite Strangeness", a brilliantly dubbed-out, beatbox electro tweak of Barbara Mason's "Another Man", while "Who Do You Think You Are" sees the duo brilliantly chop-up funk classic "Mr Big Stuff" in a vintage hip-hop breaks style.

Review: Hampshire-based Groove Motion - AKA DJ/production duo Wayne Altham and Jack Henwood - describe their style as "bangin' soulful music". Certainly, there's plenty of soul to be found throughout this debut release for Midnight Riot. Throughout, they impeccably blur the boundaries between re-edits, remixes and original productions, delivering new takes on classic tracks with plenty of cool musical flourishes. Check, for example, the deliciously evocative piano solos on their breezy house version of The Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt" (here renamed "To The Music"), or the sparkling guitars and tactile chords of Sade re-cut "Nothing Can". There's also a cheery, sun-flecked goodness to "So Good To Me", their house-friendly version of Donald Byrd's Paradise Garage classic "Love Has Come Around".

Review: North Sea dweller and nu-disco diver Headpocket hasn't rested on his laurels since the recent release of his Tubular Vision album, already returning with this Tropical Golf EP on the mighty Midnight Riot. There are four new sizzlers here, all of which veer on the deep side of things but it different ways: "Headstrong" is synth-drenched 80s disco-soul, "Fade to Blue" is soothing piano house, "Bottlejack Settledown" fuses holiday cocktail-house vibes with live funk guitar, but best of all is "50 Dog 100 Dog" which is a deliciously melancholic sunkissed Balearic/Italo-disco instrumental. Gorgeous!

Review: Adelaide-based producer Henri Le Blanc got his break with Midnight Riot after being championed by fellow Aussie studio don Inkswel. It makes perfect sense. While Le Blanc's style somewhat differs from that of the Hot Shot giant, he shares the same love of dusty grooves, soulful chords, swinging beats (some deep house, some informed more by disco or hip-hop) and warm instrumentation. It's an endearing formula that makes for an excellent debut album. Inspired, according to its maker, by the ups and downs of "real love", The House of Love is packed with highlights, from the percussive deep house warmth of "States Is High" and Balearic disco loveliness of "L'Amour Physique", to the Afro-influenced MPC shuffle of "African Mother".

Review: Midnight Riot boss Yam Who? isn't one to rest on his laurels, nope he's always out hunting new talent and here he's bagged Jam Master for an eponymous debut on the nu-disco imprint. Over the five tracks supplied here, the overriding vibe is all about lounging in a neon-lit Miami Vice-era nightclub, albeit one more favoured by Tubbs than Crockett. Shimmering digital synth funk is the name of the game and it's a joy to behold, with the best largely instrumental bits of anonymous mid '80s electro-soul edited and looped into a deliriously glamorous haze. Slick.

Review: Yam Who's Midnight Riot label is usually a good source of dancefloor-friendly material from fast-rising producers. He appears to have uncovered another unpolished gem in James Rod, AKA Spanish producer James Rodriguez. Dynasty is packed with material that impressively treads the fine line between re-edits and sample-heavy original production. Rod begins by dropping a chunk of guitar-sporting nu-disco, complete with spacey electronics and a killer bassline, before reaching for the filters on "Weather Stone", seemingly a Tiger & Woods style chop-up of Stone's "Time". "Dawn of Chandler" is a rolling electro-funk delight, while Fran Deeper hook-up "Flauta Guayana" expertly melds rubbery electric bass with boogie drums and intergalactic electronics.

Funk Pimpin features four cuts of quality vintage disco, funk and soul sounds, our faves including the sumptuous clavinet and guitar instrumental duel "This Funk Is Solid", the elasticated vocal grind of "Disco Fever" and the rough, raw and heady growler ""Running Back".

Review: Yam Who's Midnight Riot series continues to impress, delivering tracks that sit somewhere between cheeky re-edits, illicit remixes and original productions. There's much to enjoy on this latest label missive, a four-tracker from Waterford-based disco/electrofunk enthusiast Jay Roche (aka Jay-Ru). "It's Not Over" is a deliciously wide-eyed version of '80s soul fave "It's Over Now" with some neat additional nu-disco and deep house touches, while "Say You Love Me Girl" is a brilliant cut-up edit of a soaring '80s disco jam. "Brown Baby" employs similar MPC-jamming techniques, as well as a killer breakdown and build-up slap bang in the middle. Finally, "It's Tooo Late" [sic] alternates between subdued groovery and grandiose flourishes on a delightful slo-mo disco gem.

Review: Irishman Jay-Ru proved his re-edit credentials on the previous installment of this series of cheeky-edit-or-original-production tunes. So much so in fact, that label boss Yam Who has invited him back to the Midnight Riot fold for more of the same. And who's complaining? Well what with the fluty clavinet grind of "Can't Hide", the bluesy lament "The Thrill Has Gone" and the loopy hippy soul of "Got To Find A Way, pretty much nobody really.

Review: Just in time for the summer festival season comes this gem of an EP from Rio-based Joutro Mundo (AKA DJ/producer Jonas Rocha), featuring a swathe of superb reworks of Brazilian and American disco and boogie gems. The hits come thick and fast, from the straightened-out disco-boogie shuffle of "Danca" and effortlessly sunny "Boogie Da Central", to the acid-laden P-funk tweak of "Bring It Back (Jou Acid Way)", and horn-totin' smoothness of "Dancin Happy". Best of all, though, is "Tanto Tempo", a toe tapping saunter through bass-heavy Brazilian funk territory built around a killer drum break.

Review: Having previously graced the release schedules of Dab Hand and Kojak, nu-disco don Magnetic Soul is back this time with a new five tracker on Midnight Riot. It's hard to choose, but the best of these quality jams include the mind-warping retro funk of "Do It Baby", the floaty forward flying flute-disco of "Mr Cool" and the intense clap 'n' stomp-along "Freekin Fine".

Review: With a cover that looks like a ZX Spectrum game from 1983, it's fairly clear we're into retro 80s territory here. Since the early 80s are arguably the coolest era in dance music, that's no bad thing. Mista Shifta presents here five digital electro-funk and disco jams positively brimming with neon-flecked goodness. Highlights include the arpeggiated accelerator of the Sylvester-sampling "High Energy", the raw bleepy soul jam of "Hot Night" and the slammin' electro banger "Light Up".

Review: Spanish vibe maestro Mr Absolutt makes his Midnight Riot debut, adding four more exemplary edits to his portfolio in the process. Slinky, sexy '80s boogie is the order of the day as we're submersed in a sea in a synths, slap bass and lavish melodic textures. Ranging from a cosmic extension of Kool & The Gang's "Emergency" to an epic, horn heaving polish of Phyllis Hyman's cover of Bobby Caldwell's classic "What You Won't Do For Love", Absolutt lives up to his name with complete authority. Monstrously good.

Review: To some soul music became super artificial in the chrome and carpet world of the mid-80s. Thankfully Spanish producer Mr Absolutt isn't one of those people and neither are we. This single dives head first into the aforementioned world with aplomb: "Playmates" is all snappy drums, clean guitar licks and fizzy synths, "Sweet Heat" is boogie with some killer electro-bass for extra kicks, "Touchdown" has that more pop production of that era sounding more than a little bit like Luther Vandross and "You'd Better Not Fool Around" ends on a laser-funk high.

Review: According to the accompanying press release from Midnight Riot, Colombian-in-London Nicolas Saavedra (AKA Nico) "exists only for those who understand the funk". Certainly, there's a definite funk to "Afraid To Die", a stuttering fusion of bold vocals, shiny nu-disco synths, choppy '80s edits and elasticated electrofunk grooves. There's a little more house flavour about "Get Off", which laces classic pianos and big vocals over a twisted synthesized bassline and thumping beats. The package is completed by "Jump To It", a strobe-friendly trip into late '80s/early '90s US garage complete with diva vocals and hip-house breaks.

Review: Peza is a shady re-edit hero, whose previous releases have created all kinds of a stir in the disco world. This latest EP, Subway, for the esteemed Midnight Riot, has already notched up some serious pre-release support from the likes of Andy Weatherall and Horse Meat Disco. One listen to the four tracks included here and you can tell why - we get everything from some slowed-down Eurythmics ("Stranger") to the deep and spacey funk grooves of "You Ain't Never" via the female disco/clavinet interface funk of "Do You Have Any?".

Review: If sleep editing was a medical condition, Rayko would be a prime candidate. His re-edits and reworks of classic disco, boogie and electrofunk cuts appear so frequently, in such high volume, that you have to wonder how he finds the time to finish them all during his waking hours. Still, the quality remains high, and this quartet of new reworks is amongst his best for a while. The loopy, low-slung bass, winding sax and dubwise effects of "Bite The Apple" impress, before "Simulation" offers a thrilling trip into intoxicating disco-rock territory. "Fake Feeling" tweaks a well-known disco classic, before standout "Excitation" delivers an undulating chunk of basement bothering instrumental electrofunk dubbiness.

Review: There's a reason that Midnight Riot's eponymous compilations frequently charge to the top of the Juno Download charts. Put simply, they never disappoint. This ninth installment sticks to the now tried-and-tested formula - house-friendly re-edits and originals from across the disco, boogie, soul and funk spectrum - but predictably hits the spot throughout. As usual, there's a bonus mix - this time put together by globe-trotting scalpel jockey Rayko - and tracks come from both label regulars ('80s Child, Ziggy Phunk, Chewy Funk) and an impressive array of new or unheralded talents. It's in the latter category that you'll find some of the most impressive fare - see Phil Jaimes deliciously Balearic "Nowhere To Hide" and Cosmocomics' kaleidoscopic synth-funk jam "Mary Jane" - though the standard remains pleasingly high throughout.

Review: Here's something a little different from Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint: a selection of house-friendly disco re-edits and disco/house blends from long-established funk-house brother Seamus Haji. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the loopy, midtempo chug of "Giving You" and delay-laden disco-funk badness of "Be My Baby", to the arms-raised disco-soul sweetness of "I'm Happy". He also delivers some thrilling West Indian disco deepness in the shape of "Caribbean Baby", and throws together all manner of classic disco samples on the suitably large "24-7", the EP's most obviously house-centric moment.

Review: Solid Fool is one of those pesky "mystery artists" that are so prevalent these days - a well-regarded Austrian producer who wishes to remain nameless. Here Comes The Sun marks his debut for Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint. His style neatly sidesteps easy categorization, utilising classic (and obscure) disco, funk, soul and electrofunk samples alongside nu-disco synths and weighty deep house grooves. It's a formula that guarantees fun-times and funk aplenty. Opener "Here Comes The Sun" is particularly good - a bumpy, thrill-a-minute fusion of P-funk bottom end, shimmering synths and vocals lifted from a classic cover of the well-known Beatles record. Elsewhere, "Lone Gone" is a delicious, toe-tapping head-nodder that adds a reggae swing to a killer disco groove, while the epic "Lovechild" is a 12-minute exercise in slowly building disco release.

Review: Given the lack of concrete information online about the identity of the South Beach Recycling edits crew, we'll have to refer to them as 'mystery editors'. Their publicity-shy approach may have something to do with the well-known nature of some of their source material. Opener "Light Sabre", for example, delivers a tough, floor-friendly rework of a hands-in-the-air Paradise Garage disco fave from Gayle Adams, while "He's Alright" offers a delightfully dubbed-out, largely instrumental interpretation of the Staple Singers well-loved cover of Talking Heads's "Slippery People". Ironically, it's the edits of slightly more obscure jams that hit home hardest, with the carnival percussion, thrillingly loose drums and horn-totin' madness of the near 11-minute "Love Anybody" standing out.

Review: Since first appearing on Midnight Riot earlier this year, scalpel-wielding re-edit duo South Beach Recycling has closely guarded their identities. Whoever they are, they have a knack for turning dusty disco jams - either well-known, or more obscure - into dancefloor gold, usually via a few well-placed filters, good chops, judicious use of loops and expert re-arrangements. This second EP is arguably stronger than their debut, containing as it does the string drenched, anthem-like swoops and builds of "Independent", the Latin-tinged, electric piano heavy summer madness of "Still Know U", and the on-point Afro-disco business of "Sanisha". Best of all, though, is "Satisfaction Action", a ten-minute trip into high-tempo disco-funk-meets-boogie territory.

Since then things have been quiet, but that's all changed with the arrival of this new eponymous three-tracker, and it's worth the wait! "Pink Ink" is total early 80s Essex electro-soul joy. With added 21st century thumping kick drum, "Something Ain't Right" ploughs a similar field, but relies less on the boogie, instead sounding like an early hip-hop/electro-pop jam. However it's the sublime "Places", all deep, ecstatic proto house that truly mesmerises.

He's got five slices of party-ready madness this time around, the jewels of which have to be the boogie-tastic "I Never Knew", slo-mo jazz-house piece "A Single Number", and the funky percussive bomb "Coming Back". Review: A right old trip round the '80s this one, with Tom Vine presenting us with four re-edits from the early days of digital disco. It's a body poppin' thrill of a ride too; from the arpeggiated Italo disco/proto house jam "Take My Man Away" to the the NOIA-style slo-mo Euro-disco of "Can't You Feel It". Furthermore there's the glistening, jheri curl-friendly electro-soul of "Love Me Tonight" and the slinkier, more organic funk of "New Sneakers".

Review: It would be fair to say that Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint is good at spotting talent on smaller labels and giving them a bit of a push. The latest to receive this treatment is Tonbe (AKA Serbian producer Milos Djordjevic). The Big Game Fishing EP is arguably his strongest EP to date, and sees him going deeper into disco production whilst retaining his usual house-friendly dancefloor sensibility. Opener "Original Tool" - all rousing horns, clipped guitars, smothering organs and chunky beats - is particularly potent. The deep house-boogie fusion "Money Maker" is tasty, too, while "Explore Your Fantasy" expertly layers parping horns and funk guitars over a slap bass-propelled groove. Closer "Disco Nights" - a breezy, summery nu-disco jam destined for heavy rotation in sunny climes - is also pretty nifty.

Review: Hot on the heels of his recent album Detective's Story, Serbina nu-disco man Tonbe is already back with a sizzling new four-track single. It's a rollicking ride through slickly produced vintage sounds taking in silky '80s synth soul on "Give Me All", filtered disco funk on "When I Meet You", '70s-style analogue boogie on "Keep On" and the cosmic groove live jam of "Saturday". The package is also beautifully complimented by a Shalamar-esque remix by re-edit hero, Yam Who?.

Fur Hildegard Von Disco - (6:04) 112 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Having recently concentrated on handing debuts to little-known artists, Midnight Riot has decided to take a slightly different approach for this latest outing. It comes from Trujillo, a man whose Balearic inclined blends of deep house and nu-disco have previously impressed via Spain's Apersonal imprint. As usual, there's much to enjoy, from the sunny shuffle, soulful vocals (seemingly borrowed from an R&B record) and cute Balearic touches of "Makin' Me High", to the head-nodding, nu-disco-goes-hip-house loveliness of "Postin' High". Also worth a look is "Fur Hildegard Von Disco", a deliciously hazy, sun-kissed chugger built around sweet, delay-laden guitars, baggy grooves and Prince style vocal hooks (drenched, naturally, in plenty of delay).

Review: When it comes to consistent quality, few re-edit labels can match Midnight Riot! Yam Who's label rarely gets it wrong, and the veteran producer has so far given debuts to a swathe of future re-edit heroes. Here he's at it again, offering Tom "TV" Vine a chance to flex his scalpel skills for the first time. Vine delivers four mature, floor-friendly concoctions that range from the Balearic rock-meets-dub disco vibe of "Games People Play" and delay-laden boogie hustle of the decidedly dubwise "Body Movement", to the surging electrofunk-meets-proto-house throb of "Shalama". It's this latter track that impresses most, with darting synths and Prince style fuzz guitar coasting waves of Italo-style arpeggios.
