Review:
It doesn't take Uri Geller to work out that Not Not Fun's latest signing are pitching their music at the witching hour, and they've done a marvellous job of creating a hypnagogic sound world in which to exorcise their somnambulant demons. Wraith-like furls of melody prowl around barely audible murmurs of beats, capturing a sorrowful elegance that calls to mind Vangelis or even some of John Carpenter's more delicate moments. It seems inevitable that a project steeped in this kind of concept would come off feeling like a soundtrack, and true enough there's a neon-lit romanticism at work here which puts the likes of the Drive soundtrack to shame.

Review:
The work of cultish Viennese abstract house crew Cruise Family, "We're In Heaven" is yet another release to savour on American label Not Not Fun. The "Dream" mix of the title tune is a perfectly judged slo-mo disco voyage to the kosmos, rendered by twinkly arpeggios and mainlined bass, while "Be Part Of It" will instantly recall artists as diverse as Gesaffelstein (in his slower, "Viol"-esque mode), Vangelis and Teh KLF. "Gone By Dawn" rounds off this stellar EP with a climbing synth pattern which fans of Todd Terje's recent "It's The Arps" release will take to their heart straight away.

Review:
With a release last year for sister label 100% Silk, three-piece production outfit Cuticle find themselves on Not Not Fun for mini-album Mother Rhythm Earth Memory. Despite the move in labels, stylistically this release still focuses on a sub-aquatic brand of house, albeit one that's initially slowed down to a sticky crawl by water pressure, present in the fractured saw waves of "Intro/Opener" and the muted vocodered melodies of "Liquid Crystal Drink (Pour My Dream)". In the second half however, following the beatless pulsations of "Narc Girl", the tracks build in energy towards a housier mood, and the Fingers Inc. inspired basslines present on "Trickle" and "Night Of Romance". There aren't many outfits that can combine Chicago house with DIY synth-pop aesthetics and pull it off, but Cuticle do so with ease.

Review:
The ever eclectic Not Not Fun welcome a new outfit to their impressive and long-standing catalogue! You can expect the usual mishmash of styles and genres here, but more impressively still, it's actually based on the motorcycle-fuelled sounds of South Dakota's racing rally - a real immersion into the deep and sweltering sand-swept hills of the desert. The opener, "Sun Rider" aptly begins with an engine spark and loosens its propellers with soft, nostalgic drum loops and hazy melodies; but the LP develops into subtler, more charming facets, such as "So Gold", an echoing journey that recalls long drives through the dunes and "Out Of The Grave", a bittersweet anthem, sparking gentle waves of euphoria. "Watch Of The Bear" is another highlight, with its brooding, distant vocals gliding sparsly above clicking drums and rivers of delayed chords; and the same goes for "Infinite Ride" - probably the most emotive piece of music in this reflective and dense voyage through the sunsets of southern USA. Magical.

Review:
Having come through with a DIY approach to spreading his homespun synthesiser studies around, Golden Donna lets Not Not Fun take hold for this new EP which features styles that seem right at home on the label. "Flashing Hands Of Carousel" warbles and flutters with VHS soundtrack charm while core melodic refrains get bolstered by rippling, zipping and fizzing analogue sound effects, while "Paulding Light" shuffles along on a tidy house beat that calls to mind fellow oddball weilder of archaic machinery, Heatsick. However the sound is far more fully formed that that, and across five tracks Donna shows off a tremendous scope in what his applied science can be turned to.

LA VAMPIRES with MARIA MINERVA

Review:
Amanda Brown's own LA Vampires are among the many stepping up to her Not Not Fun label this month, and on this LP she has enlisted Maria Minerva to add to the sonic melee. It's pleasing to hear Minerva's processed vocals and lo-fi sonics applied to a steadier groove template here, with all the necessary functionality of classic house music intact. There are some all-out thrilling moments such as "End Of The World", and plenty of strung out moments, but it's still remarkable how many different moods get settled on along the way through Brown's unique approach to the album format.

Review:
The Amazonian Estonian songstress makes her triumphant return to Not Not Fun with her third album in 18 months. It's easily the best collection of tracks she's produced in her short but productive career; sharpening up her sound but still remaining resolutely lo-fi. The chopped up eastern strings of opener "The Sound" showcases a new sample based direction, albeit one which melds with her foggy synths, while "I Don't Wanna Be Discovered" sees her advance the house sounds of her 100% Silk output with a genuine alternate reality 90s club hit, and "Sweet Synergy" indulges her hip-hop tendencies with an R&B jam to way only Minerva could do it. Like the equally prolific masters of decayed synths and weirdo lounge-pop Hype Williams, Minerva is only getting better with each release - brilliant stuff.

Review:
The ever-sultry Not Not Fun welcomes new act Moon Wheel to their roster. The label is known to be as diverse as it is, well, excellent, and the mysterious Moon Wheel opens the festivities with a seriously hypnotising bundle of quasi-4/4 delight on "Elbsandsteingebirge", where spacey pads meet muffled bass drums and psychedelic melodies. "Aileifr" develops Moon Wheel's surrealist impersonation of electronica with heart-warming synth patterns, but "Arecaceae" turns things even deeper, calling on bizarrely familiar middle-eastern harmonics. "Walpurga" is a gorgeous display of FX and drones, whilst tracks like "Brontide" and "The Weather" offer something a little bit darker and more ominous but without ever losing any of the Moon Wheel's dreamy textures and beat arrangements. Another fine addition to Not Not Fun's illustrious catalogue.
