Review: It's nice to see Manchester's Paper Recordings return. Once responsible for some of the greatest deep house to come out of the UK (and, bizarrely, Norway), Paper also brought the world Crazy Penis (before they lost the appendage). The Crazy P link is still strong, as the label's decision to remix/re-edit the band's deep house flavoured 1999 debut album "A Nice Hot Bath With" proves. This final two-track sampler is the best yet, and features remixes from Crazy P themselves and Yam Who? While the former's dubbed-out version of "Do It Good" is excellent, it's the latter's rework of "Omega Man" that really excels - all rich, deep chords, brilliantly layered percussion and sweet electronic soul.

Review: Dave 'Daco' Connelly is a veteran studio knob-twiddler with a penchant for releasing chunky dance music with soul. "Drip Dry", his second release for hometown label Paper, follows that ethos, offering up a swinging midtempo groove heavy on weighty synth bass, scat vocal hooks and sparkling pianos. It's neither nu-disco nor deep house, but rather something in between - a strange but flavoursome concoction that's certainly worth investigating. There's a great bonus remix from Yam Who, too, which sneakily ups the tempo and injects "Drip Dry" with a 1000mg of liquid space funk. If anything, it's even better than the original version.

Review: Cape-wearing Paper Recordings boss Flash Atkins swoops down to deliver another three-track outing, this time focusing on his first musical love, house. Pleasingly, each of the three original tracks touches on different sounds and inspirations. Opener "Hard Days" has a near Balearic feel - all positive synths, retro-futurist piano riffage and classic Morales/Def Mix grooves. "Freak Club" delivers a hypnotic groover reminiscent of classic Junior Boy's Own productions, complete with a rambling spoken word vocal from Little Lost Boy. Closer "Flood Warning", meanwhile, is bound to create dancefloor energy thanks to its rolling electric pianos and boompty-influenced beats.

Review: Having previously impressed with some killer re-edits, Whiskey Disco man Sleazy McQueen pops up on iconic Manchester deep house imprint Paper Recordings with a trio of original productions. There's much to admire, particularly lead cut "We Need To Reconnect". While retaining some of McQueen's usual disco/boogie sassiness, it offers a piano house journey that's both delightfully breezy and authentically old skool. Elsewhere, there are more hints at McQueen's disco and yacht rock past, from the low-slung, crystalline flavours of "Rolling Me By" (all clipped guitars, icy melodies and fat electric bass) to the slo-mo analogue bounce and drifting melodies of "Under My Spell".
