Singer Elina Monova has enjoyed a stop-start career to date, releasing just a handful of singles and appearing on one or two notable albums (the most highlight being Manuel Tur's most recent effort on Freerange). Here she attempts to get her solo career going again with an intriguing EP on Rest. "Something Special" itself is a fragile oddity - a soft focus downtempo cut that woozily touches on jazz and deep house. The EP's other original cut, "L'Annant", sees her move successfully into atmospheric deep house territory. The package also includes a number of floor-friendly remixes. Of these, it's Eddie C's deep jazz-house tweak of the title track that most impresses. Recommended.
Rest's first release, Discoshit's fluid and decidedly groovy Strike A Pose, won support from a host of well-regarded DJs and producers. This second release on the label looks likely to garner more praise for the imprint. It's similarly loose and languid in its approach, fixing flowing chords, pads and melodies to faithfully shuffling grooves. Morgenklang opens proceedings with the Visionquest-does-US-garage flex of "Green & Blue", before Superloader offers something for the stoners in the shape of the decidedly deep and lazy "Walk With Me". Discoshit closes with "Strangers", a formidable mix of spooky deepness, electrofunk quirkiness and gut-bothering sub-bass pressure.
