Shogun Audio's Alix Perez is one of the scene's most interesting producers, providing a genuine buzz for each new track he puts out there. Featuring storming remixes from artists across the full spectrum of dance music, the hip hop inspired beats of "Annie's Song" is first given the jungle treatment from Hospital Records don S.P.Y before Shadow Child rips up the stylesheet and presses on with a full-on garage bouncer. Maddslinky, Zed Bias' UK funky alter-ego chops up the original to hit the dancefloor with a blast from the past and finally "We Could Have Been" rounds up the release with a trip down more familiar rolling Alix Perez territory. So many styles, so many talents, it's a must have yet again from one of D&B's big guns.

The Shogun Audio boss comes up with a little surprise on his Brighton-based label. Taking a step away from the likes of Perez and Rockwell, his Led Astray EP is a slab of unashamed Radio One-toting drumstep filth! Screeching synths, bass groans, catchy vocal hook and warm instrumentals all feature heavily. Culprate's remix is heavy, transforming the original into a punishing dubstep lurcher. The Sigma remix of "Stand Up (feat. Dynamite MC)" accompanies, bringing the 2010 original bang up to date with a cool twist.

What happens when you cross one of drum & bass' most prominent DJs and label owners with one of the dubstep scene's most influential and successful producers? Friction and Skream, two titans in their own scenes, have done just that with "Kingpin", and it's undoubtably the sound of now. With hints of trap and big grime influences in the form of sharp flows from Scrufizzer, P Money and Riko Dan, it's a release that's right on the money. Calyx & TeeBee's remix is darker and techier, adding an edgy drum and bass vibe to the original, wheras Rockwell adds his frenetic style. You never know what this guy is going to come up with but he's come up with a dancehall/bassline/grime/garage hybrid that would make anyone dance like their legs were on fire. Jay Fay on the other hand is big, ridiculous and techy - imagine Daft Punk's evil twins were separated from them at birth and grew up in Kingston.

Review:
A man more often scene behind the decks than in the studio, the Shogun Audio head honcho brings forth his Someone EP. The eponymous track of the EP, a favourite of Fearne Cotton's no less, is a commercially minded, euphoric, vocal-led banger, featuring vocal work from McClean. A super-slick slice of summery D&B here from the Shogun Assassin. "Flip The Page" is on a more pared down vibe, with whirring b-line, upbeat drums, tinkling melodies and plenty of sparkle. A surefire hit for the ravers. Remixes come from The Prototypes and Rockwell, with the former rising South Coast duo serving up a half step infused effort that comes across as a rougher variant on DJ Fresh's chart chopping endeavors. In contrast Rockwell lays the focus on the emotive potential of those vocals, pitched down, scratched up and placed amidst a restrained arrangement dipped in fuzzy atmospherics and diced up syncopation.

Having already hinted at it on his album Under The Ice, this represents Dutch ex-pat Icicle's first full sub-low exploration into dubstep; and each of the four tracks on offer are true, hypnotic treats. All to be filed under the more rhythmical, loopy, techno-inspired dubstep sub category; "BNC" struts with fancy footwork and deep chilling synths, "Acid Step" slithers with a slinky, stripped back formula that'll work well for warm ups and transitions, "Need A Job" takes dubstep by way of Detroit while "Together In Dust" finishes the set with a truly trippy signature.

Taken from Icicle's recently released album Under The Ice, the Redemption EP takes the title track and re-packages it with remixes from Alix Perez, Marco del Horno, an instrumental and "Galacticstep". "Redemption" blends house, techno and dubstep into a futuristic roller with Robert Owen's iconic, ethereal warbling over the top. Then it's over to fellow label mate Alix Perez, who ups the tempo with eerie atmospherics and crisp, acerbic beats and twisted b-line pressure. Rinse FM's Marco Del Horno delivers a late night 4/4 interpretation, full of tribal drums and house influences. Last of all, added track "Galacticstep" adds another dose of deep, minimal ice-cold dubstep to the proceedings to round things off.

The second single from Jeroen Snik's forthcoming debut album Under The Ice, "Dreadnaught" is a superlative heavyweight roller from the ineffable Mr Freeze. Set firmly at "26 degrees below sub zero" and featuring the lyrical talents of SP:MC, it's undoubtedly one of the North London beatmaker's heaviest productions to date. With its tense alarm style bleeps, bleak atmospherics and phenomenal bassline pressure, this one's been killing it on the floor for the past few months now. Up next, "Arrows" tunes into an altogether different vibe with Spanish guitar, flutes and an old skool Bristol vibe. Can't recommend this enough.

Bristol based D&B-ster Interface heads to Brighton for his debut release on Friction and K-Tee's Shogun Audio imprint. "Desperate Measures" is all whirring bass, fidgeting drums and quirky programming, which should get the feet dancing and the heart racing on the dancefloor. A big thumbs up for originality here, especially in the dramatic midway breakdown. Accompanying this is "Fallen Angels" with soulful, sultry vocals courtesy Jay Wilcox. A warm, humming bassline glistens below the uplifting vocal work and makes for a winner in our books.

The Shogun Audio Evolution EP series can be relied upon for bringing us the best in cutting edge D&B from our favourite artists, new and old. Well, the fourth installment does not disappoint - with four killer cuts from artists as wide ranging as Optiv & BTK, The Prototypes, Icicle and new SGN:LTD signings Technimatic. Kikcing off with the awesome "Understand (feat. Sam Wills)" here mellifluous, whispering vocals are paired with grinding beats. Then there's "Blackout (feat. MC ID)" which is a contorted, high energy slab of filth. "Timer" sees the Iceman on some next level raw and ruthless tip - this one is immense - before Technimatic round things off with a shimmy of blissed out beats and murmuring vocals in "Solace". A cracking EP.

D&B darling du jour, Tom "big-in-the-game" Rockwell, makes his debut on Friction's lauded Shogun Audio imprint with this stunning release. Always leaning towards the experimental edge, Rockwell goes in deep with the six and a half minute "Full Circle" - a menacing, moody number with glowing atmospherics, a warm, humming b-line and delicate glitches to keep the tension rolling. "My War", also heavily rinsed by all the big dogs, takes things on a tougher, darker tip with trademark cinematic sounds, and trickling, dribbling rhythms a-plenty and a gruff overtone. It"s a superb, yet sinister utterance, and a fantastic package overall. Let's 'ave it!

Review:
Another astounding release from Rockwell here, as he follows up an impressive back catalogue of hits with another intricately woven piece of sonic wizardry. "Tripwire", the title track, is a masterpiece, bearing passing resemblance to previous work "BTKRSH" in the level of detail and quirky, displaced rhythms. Fearsome from the off, this one is a burst of bubbling SFX, razor sharp snares, booming bass and chopped up vocal. "The Rain", perhaps slightly reminiscent of "Reverse Engineering" is a more deep, contemplative piece, with gently tripping, rippling beats and a cinematic quality. Atmospherics sweep gently and piano keys add an eerie element to the piece.

Review:
Possibly one of his strongest releases to date, the inimitable talent that is Rockwell comes up with this astounding half-time D&B offering entitled "Childhood Memories" with accompanying remixes from Neosignal, Metrik and Teeth. The original is a glorious fusion of time-stretched, distorted vocals from Kito and Sam Frank, which echo, whisper and dance around one another as if from another time, glitchy SFX, clapping beats and hazy synths. In the midst of it dreamy, bleepy melodies are juxtaposed with smacking snares to add further madness to the mayhem. Neosignal provide a devastating remix which adds a generous dose of tech-ed up neurofunk to the proceedings, whilst the Metrik remix is straight up stadium-pleasing dancefloor fun with buckets of energy and Teeth provides a stripped back re-interpretation to please the deeper end of the spectrum. An exceptional release here from Rockwell.

Part two of the Evolution EP series kicks off with the superlative and much caned contemporary classic "BTKRSH" by Rockwell. Full of croaking, robotic SFX, surging sci-fi synths and futuristic furore, the glitchy beats, quirky drum programming and sleazy funk-riddled atmospherics make this the EP's stand out track. Elsewhere, The Prototypes up the turbo-charged tech vibes with "Subterrestial", Ici adds some deepness in his remix of Friction & K-Tee and S.P.Y closes the four-tracker with a Total Science style roller, aptly named "Pressure Drop". Brilliant from beginning to end.

The third part of the Shogun Audio Evolution EP series brings us a selection of tracks from Rockwell, Total Science, D Bridge, Alix Perez and The Prototypes. Rockwell's "Constantcomplexrhythmicsound" is, well, just that! "Feel Me" is classic Total Science with percussive breaks, yearning vocal and ominous bassline, and then D Bridge brings us a slice of deep, dreamy atmospheric D&B with "Not What You Want". The Jubei remix of Alix Perez's "Myriads" is a dark, bassline roller whilst The Prototypes take things dancefloor with their momentous VIP of "Subterrestrial". Amazing and expansive as ever, don't miss out on this one.

Much loved Brighton-based Shogun duo Spectrasoul have always impressed with their versatility, taking us from lush, vocal-led beauties to deep, dark bass-driven cuts at the click of a button. Here, their skills culminate in "Light In The Dark", in which the sweet, sonorous vocals of Terri Walker are paired with snapping snares and an impenetrable booming bassline, whilst reverberating SFX add further depth to the piece. "Shackles (feat. Fox)" sees the boys taking a different approach with rough, rattling breaks, gritty bass, an urban overtone and Fox spitting lyrics over the top. Superb from start to finish.

Review:
Undoubtedly one of Spectrasoul's strongest tracks to date, "Lost Disciple" is a moody, bass driven dancefloor cut which picks up where they left off after their last release - "Glimpse" feat. D Bridge on Shogun last year - and takes it into the great unknown with lashings of soulful sultriness. Centred around the penetrating bassline, the layered lyrics and soothing melody are woven around deftly to form a delectable track. "Reminiscence", again a rather introspective track, gets points for top-notch bass, but is rather more playful with quirky rhythmic patterns and cooing vocal snippets.

The ever-reliable Shogun Audio imprint, co-owned by DJ Friction and K-Tee, presents the next release in a slew of quality singles. This time the magic is brought to us by the Spectrasoul boys who team up with talented vocalist Tamara Blessa on the title track "Away With Me"; the result is a soulful slice of sexiness with white noise crackling beats and an enticing vocal driving things along. Calibre provides a lush interpretation with gentle, pattering drums and pulsing bass, underpinned by dreamy instrumentals, while dubstep darling Kito gives it the Rustie treatment with a bleepy kaleidoscope of sounds.

A big release to signify The Prototypes' debut on Shogun Audio sees the duo hooking up with vocalist Laura Vane on "Taking Me Over" - an epic D&B-meets-house hybrid that notches the BPM down a little from their regular tempo for a devastating, Nero-esque rinse-out. "Born To Rise" however sees them back in jump-up territory, while "Your Future" is simply a mental mix of neon-coated synth work and waves of thick, distorted bass. Dubstep duo D-Code and Dexterous, better known as The Others, pitch in with an enormous, purely dubstep remake of "Taking Me Over" that incorporates the original's euphoric builds but drops into some powerful half-step verses.

In the need for some nasty? Yeah you are, and don't you go telling us otherwise! Following up their previous storming Shogun sensations ("Cascade" and "Born To Rise"), The Prototypes showcase their ugliest vibes to date with sounds so devilish we hear Noisia are sending them a love letter. "Pandora" worms and screams its way through a sonic inferno, hissing and blazing with a bass riff that just never ends. "Abyss" takes a more neuro flavour; fans of Ed Rush, Optical or indeed Dom & Roland will be all over this. If you're thinking of writing them a love letter, join the queue, we just spotted Noisia in the Post Office earlier.
