Skint Under 5's At Juno Download

Review: It's nice to see Skint reinventing their long dormant Under 5's imprint as a home for contemporary bass music. This EP from up-and-coming producer Jack Dixon is, arguably, one of their most on-point releases yet, delivering a fluid fusion of crackly, cascading deep house chic, garage influenced vocal cuts ups and warm, sub-bothering bass. There's a hint of John Talabot about "Lose Myself", which explores similar territory to the Spaniard's brilliant "So Will Be Now". "I'm Never Right" sounds like a housier Sepalcure, while Dauwd's remix of "Lose Myself" is woozy, comfy deep house with a huggable garage flex - like Mr Beatnick minus the MPC.

Review: Warning - grotesque wobbly dubstep alert! Kinzy brings in the shuddering bass tremors and ear splitting screeches with aplomb. There's more than a hint of Doctor P in there, with quirky SFX and a heavy chiming clock calling the shots, but the stomach lurching beats return after a midway breakdown and remain for the duration. Over on the flip, the aptly named "Gangster Bop" pairs a curious jack in the box, Zebedee style sound with a Caspa/Trolley Snatcha bass heavy riddim that's murky and menacing. Bullet beats and roughed up sub bass add the seriousness that was decidedly absent in "Clockwork".

Review: Ominous from the outset, This Tape Will Self Destruct kicks off with a gloomy cinematic intro in "Freefall". Add an epic speech sample, describing through thick, treacly tones, "a new age of tyranny", a walloping b-line and plenty of shadowy darkness and you have a sure fire, conspiracy theory riddled hit. On that note, the equally furious and apocalypse-inducing ?Mind Control? continues the theme, with futuristic SFX and mind-bending synthetics. "UFO", the culmination of Matta's message on this EP, begins with faint bleeping, before launching into a filthy work out, with wonky synths, rocket fires, screechy glitches and all the auditory aesthetics of a spaceship. Oh and there?s also the bonus track, "Lost Souls" on there too!

Review: Brace yourself for a grouchy, low-end work out of the ultimate sort from Maatta in this three track offering on Skint Under 5s. First up, "Turning Tricks" is a rambunctious, vocal stuttering cut with spaced out atmospherics and a fidgety, unnerving undertone reinforced by driving kicks and fizzing SFX. "Chamber", up next, tunes into a more dubbed-out sound that is reminiscent of early-mid 00s dubstep, with a low, slouchy b-line and deep, dark soundscape that adds significant weight to the release. Final track "Puncture" pairs a spooky metallic chiming with thumping b-line and squelchy SFX like a punctured tyre.

Review: Out on the recently revived Skint Under-5's imprint, Rory Hoy packs a shed load of funk and finesse into "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Iz". A breaks-flavoured production at around 100bpm, there are loads of hip-hop scratches as well as live bass and guitars that keep the tune lively, and some killer breaks into solo Rhodes keyboard vamps too. On the remix front, Linton Brown delivers a dubstep workout with an uptempo beat that's dripping with energy. Hoy's "Keep It Down" is also included - a fun and fruity breakbeat tune that comes loaded with plenty of funky brass. All in all, a joyful collection of tunes.
