Review: When Body Language's "Falling Out" first appeared a few weeks back, it came complete with remixes from Tiger & Woods. Now Om offshoot Smoke N Mirrors have decided on a cheeky re-release with all new reworks. It's an interesting approach, but the versions here are more than worthy of rotations. Louie Fresco's version, in particular, bumps and skips impressively, coming on like an effortless fusion of organ-heavy New York garage and bumpin' deep house. Al Velilla takes a similar approach on his Dub, cutting up the original's sassy vocals with all the skill of Todd Edwards in his late 90s prime.

Review: There's something oddly foreboding about "Won't Let Go", the latest single from Crazy P man Chris "Hot Toddy" Todd's Late Night Boogie LP. While the original itself - a typical Todd style fusion of 80s electro-funk elements, deep house and the vocals of longtime Crazy P chanteuse Danielle Moore - is faintly threatening, it's the Black Strobe remix that really ups the paranoia factor. It's far more in-your-face, for starters, and the addition of some ragging acid lines adds an anthemic slant to proceedings. Erdbeerschnitzel's remix, meanwhile, is almost the polar opposite - all crackly, dubbed-out deep house grooves, off-kilter old skool riffage and cosmic vibes.

Review: 16 years after making his debut, German deep house veteran Ian Pooley continues to churn out the hits. Here he adds another label to his sprawling discography, with a debut for Om offshoot Smoke N Mirrors. "So Good" is in many ways typical Pooley; a sprightly fusion of dependable deep house rhythms and darting nu-disco synth frippery. As is often the case with Pooley's best work, there are plenty of strangely addictive, cut-up vocal samples to hurry the track along. Remix-wise, there are rubs from Hanssen and Da Funk, with the former's bubbling re-jig just edging out the latter's swirling re-make.

Review: Considering his Om connections, it's perhaps no surprise to see established deep houser producer Pezzner pop up on the San Francisco-based label's slightly more disco-leaning Smoke N Mirrors offshoot. Yet while there are a few disco touches on "Only With Your Eyes" (most notably the clipped funk guitars that dominate the groove), it could hardly be described as nu-disco. It's actually a rather pleasing rolling jazz-house excursion that benefits greatly from some subtle strings, chiming melodies and decidedly sweaty percussion. Of the two included remixes, it's Nav Izadi's midtempo re-cut that most impresses, thanks largely to its "Steve Reich goes deep house" vibe and some intricate melodic touches.

Review: On their latest release, Piek & Thinaik show that they are adept at making diverse sounds. "Here Comes The Zombie" does the modern day tribal house sound well, its muffled vocals and building synths setting it apart from the pack. Lee Foss and Kenny Glasgow's version is based on a jerky, glitchy rhythm and features glistening, shimmering synths, while "Cafe de Paris" expertly combines brassy horns with a driving rhythm. However, the EP highlight is the Al Velillas Rex Experience rework of "Paris". Deploying dubbier beats, its coquettish vocal, intoning the phrase "I live in Paris", is sure to seduce lovers of sensuous vocal house.

Review: Madrid-based twosome Wagon Cookin' have enjoyed a long and varied career, thanks in no small part to their ability to reinvent themselves. Having previously touched on broken beat, nu-jazz, deep house and the kind of organic, wholesome fodder that would once have been classed as "spiritual", this fourth long-player finds them in full-on synth-disco mode. The result is an album that draws from both classic NYC synth boogie and mid '80s soul, lovingly recreating the ubiquitous synth-pop and disco futurism of the era through a series of hooky creations. Along the way there are plenty of diversions to keep things interesting, including a synth-hevay hip-hop collab with San Fran rapper Melina Jones. Check it!

Review: Over the years, Wagon Cookin' have cast their net far and wide for inspiration, resulting in a discography that boasts both nu-jazz era "live" workouts and straight-up smoky deep house. Here, they pop-up on Smoke & Mirrors with a track that sits somewhere between giant nappy wearing 80s electrofunkers Imagination and contemporary disco-housers Crazy P. It's a good sound - heavily electronic, but packed with fluorescent funk and floodlight-bright synths. Remix-wise, Daniel Kyo provides some sturdier house grooves and European dancefloor flavour, while Al Velilla's version adds some shiny nu-disco polish.
