Review:
Martin Wheeler used to make the sweetest electro known to man (or machine), before focusing on video game design (full disclosure: this writer is a fan of his 'Go Robot' game). However, it appears that Vector Lovers is never too far from Wheeler's heart and on iPhonica he proves to be a master of electronic melody and harmony. Granted, the mood, particularly in the second half of the album is introspective, especially on the gloomy "Let's Go Home" and the serene "Final Wish", but iPhonica also shows that Wheeler is adept at making acid trax ("Kongaroid"); sensuous ambience ("Stargazing") and as "On Kastanienallee" so beautifully demonstrates, wide-eyed electro.

Review:
Slam's label has always had a knack of picking up on new talent and Viper shows that it still has that magic touch. The title track is an irresistible slice of bass-heavy techno, its pumping bass laying the foundation for a series of reflective chords. "Retro Chords" meanwhile is deeper and more mysterious sounding, with tripped out melody lines unfolding over psychedelic hooks. "Overrule" pushes the 90s sound further, with rasping percussion and a woozy bassline merging. Closing the release, "Mesm" sees Clementi opt for a more contemporary approach; Clementi takes inspiration from Modern Love as dubby textures float over a robust, system-levelling bassline.

Review:
Kudos to Soma for signing and releasing work by Reeve when it would have been far easier - and possibly more financially rewarding - to put out big room minimal techno. "Phobia" is based on a pulverising rhythm, its dark, dense pounding beats wrapped around an evil bassline and bursts of white noise. Think Perc getting it on with Surgeon and you're not far off the mark. "Fear" meanwhile manages to unite US minimalism with Birmingham style techno. The steel-plated, razor sharp rhythm is mean enough in its own right, but when Reeve combines it with the kind of sulphuric bassline that Regis would spew out, it becomes clear that Soma has hit pay dirt.

Review:
Taken from Gary Beck's recent album, the "Algoreal" traces his progression as an artist. On the title track, the white noise led builds of yore are gone, replaced by eerie, Sandwell-esque pulses, hissing percussion and a throbbing, pulsing groove. The end result is ethereal and haunting but also hugely impactful. It's in stark contrast to "Naptha". There are some traces of Beck's minimal past, audible in the shredded, splintered percussion, but the most exciting element is the menacing, acid-soaked bassline that rears and surges like a Hydra with a bad dose of the flu. Angry techno rarely sounded so articulate.

Review:
The title track is the big room offering on this release. Taking inspiration from tribal house from the early 00s as well as the more precise nature of modern day tech house, it is the model of functionality as a robust vocal-sample heavy groove features the sound of jet plane dives and whooshes bombing in overhead. Yet despite the fact that it's less immediate, Saytek and McKay impress more with "Push". Built from roughly the same elements, it is more stripped back and sees the duo focus on heavy drums, an irresistible vocal sample and the heaviest hats in techno since Sandwell District's departure.

Review:
It's been ten years since Pig & Dan first set their stall out as purveyors of vaguely progressive tech-house. Since then, they've released just one album - Imagine on Cocoon back in 2007 - but impressed tech-house DJs and critics with a series of well-received singles. Here they celebrate 10 years in the game with a second album of original material, this time for Glaswegian techno and house stalwarts Soma. It's perhaps not an ideal match - Pig & Dan's shuffling, soft focus take on techno seems at odds with the label's fun time remit - but Decade is at least an impressive collection of club tracks. There are few surprises, but plenty of atmospheric, bubbling cuts to tickle the fancy of tech-minded DJs (see the excellent "Doing It For Yourself" and percussive "Natives").

Review:
Legendary Glaswegian imprint Soma serve up this long awaited album from Alex Under. Approach La Maquina De Bolas with an open mind and you'll be rewarded; from the droney soundcsape of opener "Bola 1" through the glacially paced minimal house of "Bola 2" through to the shimmering, almost jazz-infused cuts like "Bola 5", this is an album that requires - no, demands - repeat listens. With most tracks clocking in at more than 10 minutes it's quite an epic, too! Recommended.
