Voguing & The House Ballroom Scene Of New York City 1989-92
$32.57
Review: This deluxe 200 page 24x30cm flexibound book features hundreds of
stunning photographs from the hidden world of New York's house
ballroom drag scene out of which came 'Voguing', the dance made
famous by Madonna.
Introductory text is by Tim Lawrence, author of two seminal music
books: 'Love Saves The Day: A History Of American Dance Music
Culture, 1970-79' and 'Hold On To Your Dreams: Arthur Russell And
The Downtown Music Scene, 1973-92'.
To coincide with the book, Soul Jazz Records will be releasing an
album of the same name in 2012, featuring Masters At Work, MFSB,
Junior Vasquez, Diana Ross, Armand Van Helden, Loose Joints, First
Choice and many more.
Photographer Chantal Regnault lived in New York between 1989-92,
photographing the scene at its height the dancers Willi Ninja, Jose
and Luis Xtravaganza (who all worked with Madonna) as well as
the legendary 'mothers' of the gay and transgender world - Avis
Pendavis, Peppa LaBeija, Carmen Xtravaganza, Dorian Corey, Paris
Dupree and more.
Voguing came out of the extraordinary house ballroom scene that
emerged in Harlem, New York in the 1980s where men competed
against one another for their dancing skills, the realness of their drag
and their ability to walk on a catwalk runway like a model.
Voguing erupted into the mainstream in 1990 when Madonna's song
'Vogue' became Number One in over 30 countries. The year before
Malcolm McClaren first brought voguing into the mainstream with his
song 'Deep In Vogue' featuring dancer Willi Ninja. In 1990 Jennie
Livingstone's film 'Paris Is Burning' documented the house ballroom
scene in its ascendant, the film a runaway success grossing over
$4,000,000.
As voguing entered into the mainstream the house ballrooms of
Harlem came downtown mixing with the downtown fashion crowd of
Manhattan, before the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic ravaged the
ballroom community.
These wild years of voguing and the house ballroom scene are vividly
captured at its height in hundreds of amazing, previously unpublished
photographs. A visual riot of fashion, gender, polysexuality and
subversive style, 'Voguing And The House Ballroom Scene Of New
York 1989-92' is also a fascinating document on sexuality and race.
Bossa Nova: Original Cover Art Compiled By Gilles Peterson & Stuart Baker: Bossa Nova & The Rise Of Brazilian Music In The 1960s
$33.86
Review: This deluxe hard-back book features hundreds of stunning full size record cover designs of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music from the 1960s. The book also comes complete with full accompanying text, essays and interviews on the historical, political and social context of this Brazilian music as well as features on all the important artists and musicians of the era such as Sergio Mendes, Tom Jobim, Jorge Ben, Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso and many more.

Bossa Nova, born in Rio de Janeiro, became a worldwide musical phenomenon, quickly spreading to the USA and the rest of the world. Subsequent musical styles such as the rise of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) and Tropicalia are also featured in the book. Bossa Nova emerged at the end of the 1950s, the music (and glorious designs) reflecting a new period of great optimism in the country. Brazil had just elected a new president, a new five-year plan for prosperity had been laid down and the architect Oscar Niemeyer had drawn up his plans for the city of Brasilia. By 1964, as Bossa Nova was taking the world by storm, tanks rode through Rio as Brazil came under a violent military dictatorship that would oppress the lives of Brazilians for the next twenty years.
Dancehall: The Rise Of Jamaican Dancehall Culture
$25.99
Review: 'Danehall', this heavyweight deluxe flexi-bound 200-plus book, is a definitive study and essential guide to the 1980s Jamaican dancehall scene, featuring hundreds of amazing, unique, never-before-seen photographs with accompanying text, interviews and biographies. Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Sister Nancy, Tenor Saw, Sly & Robbie, King Jammy, Eek A Mouse, Yellowman, Frankie Paul - This book is literally a who's who in stunning photos and text of dancehall's phenomenal rise. The book captures a vibrant, globally influential and yet rarely documented culture that has been mixing music, fashion and lifestyle with attitude since its inception. With unprecedented access to the incredibly rich music scene during this period, Beth Lesser's photographs and informed text are a unique way in to a previously hidden culture. Dancehall is at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, it has gone on to conquer the globe, spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond. Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology and more. 'Dancehall' is an essential reference book for anyone interested in reggae, as well as a unique photographic and textual source book of all things musical, cultural and political in Jamaica. This jam-packed visual history of dancehall from its roots to its heights is told from that rare vantage point of the true, respected insider. In the early 1980s as Jamaica was in the throes of political and gang violence Beth Lesser ventured where few others dared and this book is a never before seen record of the exciting, vibrant and sometimes dangerous world of dancehall.

Review: Having recently collaborated with Kieran Hebden, pricked the ears of Gilles Peterson and opened for Radiohead in New York, experimental electronic jazz outfit Rocketnumbernine are not short of high profile fans. Here brothers Ben and Tom Page bring their trademark brand of moody jazz futurism to Soul Jazz for a rare three-track single. All three tracks are typical of their live sound, which adds hypnotic, often intense vintage synth sounds to loose jazz percussion reminiscent of Fridge or Four Tet. Of the three tracks, it's the cacophonous "Steel Drummer" that stands out, though the melancholic "Black & Blue" and upbeat "Lone Raver" aren't far behind.

Review: This is a unique collection of cover artwork of revolutionary jazz releases in the USA in the 1970s, a time of great political and social importance for African-American artists.

Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and John Coltrane loom large as self-determination, economic power and musical freedom led to artists finding new paths both musical and economic. Away from the mainstream, many of these musicians chose to take control of their economic worth by recording, releasing and distributing their own material. Thirty years later and these artefacts are a striking reflection of the time; pre-desktop publishing, pre-internet these small-run (sometimes as low as 500 copies), self-made sleeves are as iconic and historically important as the revolution of DIY culture that sprang out of punk. Soul Jazz Records have produced many releases relating to this music and this book is the first ever collection of this amazing artwork.

The book comes with a large introduction contextualising the music and artwork and relating how the music came about along with interviews with many of the people involved.

Review: Soul Jazz Records are reissuing the long out of print Studio One Story (filmed in 2002), and now available for the first time as a standalone DVD. The DVD is being issued as a prelude to the forthcoming deluxe hardback book Original Cover Art Of Studio One Records, released by Soul Jazz Records celebrating their 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence.

The Studio One Story is a documentary this is both a staggering slice of musical history and a definitive guide to Studio One, Jamaica's greatest ever record company and its legendary
founder, Clement Coxsone Dodd.

Often described as the Motown of Jamaica or The University Of Reggae, the Studio One is where the careers of literally hundreds of reggae artists began: Bob Marley And The Wailers, Alton
Ellis, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, Burning Spear and Sugar Minott, to name but a few. the Studio One is the foundation label of Jamaican Reggae.

One and a half years in the making, the Studio One Story is a truly unique documentary in which the late Clement Dodd gave unprecedented personal access to tell the previously untold story of
how Studio One literally shaped the rise of reggae music from the 1950s onwards through to the late 1970s.

This is the true story of reggae music and its Jamaican roots told from the inside: From the rise of Kington's sound systems in the 1940s and 1950s, through to the evolution of a Jamaican music industry (and Studio One's dominance) in the 1960s and the worldwide success of reggae in the 1970s.

This amazing 4 hour documentary (including over an hour of extras) was filmed on location in Kingston, Jamaica and features interviews with Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Sugar
Minott, Denis Alcapone, The Ethiopians, Sylvan Morris, Johnny Moore, Lone Ranger, King Stitt and many others.

The DVD also includes rare footage of The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo, Count Ossie, Marcia Griffiths and others.
