Review: Don't let the name put you off, Alien Pimp sounds like a recipe for gratuitous brostep revelry and revoltingness but fear not, the self-titled EP is anything but. Think the kind of poised serenity of a Kryptic Minds release crossed with a discernibly chilled out contemplative streak and hypnotic rhythms and you're pretty much there. From evocative opening track "Another Sunny Day in Barcelona" through the dancing bleepy melodies and intricate beats of "Professional Smokescreen" to closing track "Where Was I" with its epic panoramic soundscape and King Cannibal style vocal ribbits; it's a gentle musical journey.

Review: With distorted basslines, deep subs, Middle Eastern string samples and haunting vocals, the Cosmetics' "Ill Kiss" is a bongo driven smasher. "The Wrong Girl" continues this unsettling onslaught with grimy distorted basslines, while a liberal sprinkling of ravey stabs and melodic pads providing the light relief. Review: He's just 20 years old, hails from Seattle and seamlessly sums up the quintessential sound of now. Kid Smpl's bass music credentials are fully ticked as he draws on dubstep and garage, remoulding sounds like putty into the most delectable arrangements. The title track is all crackling white noise, gentle instrumentals, pulsing beats and murmuring bass, while "On My Mind" blends cooing melodies with Burial-esque vocal sketches. "Seasons" is a softer, more nostalgic cut, full of echoes, glimpses and hints, with rippling beats and segues into the Joy Orbison-influenced, synth-heavy "Woman" before finishing up with the sumptuous bassline roller "U Were". One for fans of Joy O, Pearson Sound, James Blake et al.

Review: Nibe provides a couple of delicately balanced tracks on the Subdepth label; "Hypnotise Me", much as the title suggests, combines tinkling melodies and seductive whispering with rumbling bass and rippling rhythms to create an air of intrigue. There's wood block beats in there, used sparingly, amongst a synth-driven melody and layered soundscape. "A Long Time", too kicks off with an eerie vocal sample, synth wash and ticking percussion, before falling into a pumping late night number, full of mystique and harking towards some classic 90s house sounds at times but bringing the contemporary love for all things bass-y to the foreground. Tidy.
