Played by: The Funk Hunters
Review:
Veteran modern soul, jazz and funk peddlers, Tru Thoughts, have done it again with this new release from their in-house iron-lunged warbler, Alice Russell. Teeming with soul and exploding with passion, "Heartbreaker" sounds like some raw funk act's live cover of a lost Mary J. Blige jam. This results in the tune sounding like both a whiskey-weathered old classic and a shiny modern cut, pretty much the label's raison d'etre. FaltyDL converts it into understated glacial garage, Yakine go for brittle, almost broken, beat soul and there's even an acoustic live version if you just want the meat and potatoes!

Review:
Following collaborations with Quantic and a selection of teaser singles, Tru Thoughts' resident belter finally drops her long awaited solo LP. Alongside the previously released "Heartbreaker" and 'Twin Peaks", we get a further 12 slices of her whiskey-weathered modern soul. Highlights include the call & response of "A-Z", the staccato-hop of "For A While" and the melancholic title track, "To Dust".

Available as a special Juno Download exclusive release, Brighton label Tru Thoughts release the debut of Tokyo-born multi-instrumentalist Anchorsong. Having supported Prefuse 73, Daedelus, Gonjasufi, Jaga Jazzist and DJ Krush among others, Anchorsong steps up with an impressive array of ideas and an eclectic approach to sound - check the tight funk drums of "At The Hyatt", the soulful Rhodes bounce of "Darkrum", the orchestral sweep of "Plum Race" or the jumbled, Dilla-esque swagger of "Ornaments" to see what we mean.

Review:
Anchorsong is electronic production whizz Masaaki Yoshida, who recently relocated to London from his native Tokyo. Although known for his remarkable live sets in which he assembles music from scratch, here we have the more traditional pre-recorded version of his sound. Title track "Darkrum" is a perky, jazzy number evoking reminiscent of American early 80s TV themes such as Benson, all set to funk bassline and a 4/4 beat. Throwing Snow's remix is a punishing banger best described as sounding like drum n bass performed by a live band. Kidkanevil on the other hand, delivers a haunting, arpeggiated bleep-out of a remix that dances on that fine line where hip hop and say, witch house occasionally meet. B-Side "Hit The Bottom" sees Yoshida explore moodier territory where laid-back nu-disco flowers into a stunning piano and brass crescendo.

The second single taken from this excellent Tru Thoughts-signed band's fourth album - also called 16 Minutes - Belleruche keep things lovably pared down and intimate here, recalling the clinical digital moods of The xx, Litttle Dragon or Lykke Li. Also included are some new remixes of album tracks, with VC's mix of "Stormbird" especially standing out thanks to its tempo switch from low-slung crunky soul up to a neon reggaeton march.

Review:
Tru Thoughts' extended family now stretches all the way to Rio with this very wise new signing. Drumagick have been around for over 15 years now, adding their Latin magic to house, drum & bass and funk templates. Here we find them with carnival-o-meter set at 11 with four fantastic compositions. "Maracutu" is brash brass medley that doesn't sound far off Gregory circa "Tropical Soundclash", "Rio Drums" is a deeper, tribal affair with an off-beat wobble bass thrown in, "Sunday Morning" is a jazzier, silkier affair while "Feelings" flips the switch on a lush rolling D&B tip with washy, soothing chords and emotive pianos.

Review:
Hidden Orchestra come through with their second album for Tru Thoughts, the impeccably moody Archipelago. Lead by DJ and producer Joe Acheson, there have always been plenty of parallels drawn with the Cinematic Orchestra, but whilst they undoubtedly occupy a similar space this should not distract from what is a truly rewarding listen. At times the mood is hypnotically atmospheric and others the Hidden Orchestra are gorgeously intense in their arrangements, and the ten tracks onArchipelago evoke thoughts of a score for a forgotten 1960s film noir classic. Repeated listen bears the similar sort of hidden layers and immense detail that marks out CO's early material too.

Review:
Dropping album number three on Tru Thoughts, Brighton producer Hint cooks up a roller coaster ride of UK bass, dancehall, hip-hop and house on "Daily Intake". Having had Rizzle (of Rizzle Kicks) on his previous LP, Hint this time enlists the soulful and feisty vocals of Natalie Storm on sizzling opener "Crash And Burn", while garage legend Zed Bias weighs in on the joyously bassy "Lock The Door". And on the slower side, Josie Stingray and 1-OAK lend their hip-hop weight to the head-nodding "Give It Up" while T-Fly owns the excellent warped funk and old school MPC swing of "Aliens Enter".

New Orleans' popular hip-hop infused, jazzy marching band are back with a new two track single. First up, the guys, tuck in to a raucous rendition of The Specials' "Ghost Town", raw and loose, it makes the listener want to jump right into speakers and join the party. Second tune, "Let Me Do My Thing", is an energetic call-and-response celebration of individuality and freedom.

It's been less than 12 months since the last Hot 8 Brass Band full-length, but the New Orleans nine-piece are clearly on a roll. Tombstone, their third album, is every bit as thrilling, intoxicating and funky as their previous albums. Showcasing their terrific live playing and instinctive Louisiana swing, it sounds like a recording of the best impromptu party you've never been to. This time round, there are no gimmicky covers and unusual interpretations, just a string of booming, horn-heavy compositions that showcase their impeccable skills to the max. In truth, it's all the better for it; arguably, Tombstone is their strongest album to date.

Returning with a second LP, having come through the ranks of the Tru Thoughts stable with her 2010 debut, Canadian/Norwegian singer Kinny makes a big impression with this sampler of her Big Fat Liar LP. Made with Norwegian producers Souldrop, tunes like the playful funk-stomp of title-song "Big Fat Liar" mark her out as a unique artist with a commanding manner at the mic. Slower nu-funk numbers like "You From This Sting" and the unplugged version of "Water For Chocolate" mark her card in a hugely positive way, and should make for an explosive presence in 2012.

Review:
Bergen-based Tru Thoughts regular Kinny is an interesting character. An opera singer turned soul chanteuse, she relocated from Canada to Bergen in Norway some years back. She also suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, a condition that helped shape the dark, sometimes bleak lyrical content of this second full-length. For an album with such dark subject matter, it's a surprisingly breezy set. Produced by Norwegian crew Souldrop, Can't Kill A Dame With Soul confidently shuffles between vintage soul, jaunty reggae, hip-hop, R&B and neo-soul, occasionally pausing to deliver a genuine musical curveball (see the inventive cover of the Cure's "The Love Cats").

Review:
After a three-year hiatus - presumably to accommodate her work with The Bamboos - Australian singer Kylie Auldist returns to Tru Thoughts with her third solo full-length. With Bamboos man Lance Ferguson again handling production duties, it differs little musically from previous outings. Arguably, though, it's still her best album to date. The songs are strong, the production tight and the playing impeccable. Her staple sound is soaring 1970s soul - all sweeping strings, punchy guitar and rousing horns, with her impeccable vocals atop. It's not revelatory in any way, but that's not the point; if you're looking for an enjoyable, '70s-sounding soul set, it comes highly recommended.

Originally hailing from New Zealand, Mark De Clive Lowe has been a leading light in the nu jazz scene for some years now. Moving to London and now more recently to Los Angeles, he's taken inspiration with him as he goes. Here he's hooked up with this European orchestra to embark on a spacey journey and he wants you on board. With eight tracks of bonkers, future-facing jazz fun-stations (highlights being the disco-jazz of "Relax, Unwind", the saucy funk of "Filthy Fingers" and the title tune's 70s soundtrack-isms), we reckon this in one train you don't want to miss.

Eyebrows were pleasantly raised with Nathaniel Pearn aka Natural Self's recent declaration of a forthcoming shift in direction towards synthpop. Now the album has arrived and it's an impressive leap for this former hip-hop orientated dude. "Metropolis" kicks things off with a bleepy Crystal Castles-meets-Dr Dre groove, single "Red Wire Blue Wire" is like a sleazier Sam Sparro, "Take It Back" is malfunctioning arpeggiated electro, the no wave-isms of "An Invisible Light" recalls the great Mount Sims and he even bravely tackles Laurie Anderson's iconic "O Superman" without coming off too scathed. Good stuff!

Omar's Sing If You Want It album, re-issued to much acclaim on Tru Thoughts in July, gets its second single release in the form of the It's So EP, featuring one of its undoubted highlights, the infectious "It's So". It's the diverse remixes that make this EP a must have; Zed Bias' remix of "It's So" turns the original into a bass-driven dancehall inspired bomb, whiles Scratch Professor's remix takes the pace right down, adding a soulful trumpet line which takes the somewhat bumping original into much mellower territory. The EP is rounded off by Mark De Clive-Lowe's neon tinted funk reworking of "Your Mess" which channels the spirit of Prince's 80s material through its fluorescent lens.

Review:
Turntablist/hip-hop veteran Scratch Professor has a long history of collaboration with UK soul legend Omar, having first lent a hand on production way back in 1994. Last year, his slinky, hip-hop-soul remix of the singer's "It's So" single was widely heralded as his best work for years (not difficult, mind, since he'd been largely inactive since the tail end of the '90s). On the back of that success, Tru Thoughts have asked him to remix more tracks from the excellent Sing (If You Want It) album. He does a bang-up, job, too offering deep, bumpin', jazzwise hip-hop revisions of "Your Mess", "Sing", "Ghana Emotion" and, most impressively, "Be A Man", which has a real Guru/Jazzmatazz feel.
