Girl In The Dark by Black Amex on Undercover Operations Cue Track
The Other Giorgio - (5:52) 120 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Although an actual Black Amex card is a super-exclusive, invitation-only thing, the disco re-edit crew who share the name operate a more inclusive, 'come one, come all' policy. Here we get two sides of their musical coin: "Girl In The Dark" is a tight 80s funker with, sharp clean guitar riffs, shimmering Fender Rhodes chords and a strong soulful vocal. The digital flip track, "The Other Giorgio" is cooler though: an intense spiralling arpeggiated bassline is ridden hard by an echoing male chant for a blistering moody electro-disco banger.

Review: The successful pairing of disco editors DJ Butcher and BnC under the Captain Futuro moniker is back and in fine form on the Undercover Operations imprint. As with their previous releases, this collaboration is less about the disco and more about the party, or 'partay' breaks. "Get A What What" is all vintage funk guitar licks, rolling beats with a superfly female rap on top. "Partay Starter" parties even harder; with tough funk breaks and a big Spring Break friendly chorus, resulting in a bona fide, hands-in the-air anthem.

Black Jeans by Dj Butcher on Undercover Operations Cue Track
Black Jeans (instrumental mix) - (8:33) 120 BPM
from $1.49
Review: There's little pretentious about the work of DJ Butcher. Whether making original material, mash-ups or re-edits, he concentrates on working the dancefloor and getting the party started. "Black Jeans" is a perfect example. Mixing sturdy disco drums (inspired, we think, by Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gees "Nights on Broadway"), re-recorded elements of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and the vocal from Steely Dan's "Do It Again", he's created a curious mash-up that will work wonders on the dancefloor. For those who want more of a "Billie Jean" flex, the instrumental strips out the vocals for a swinging trip to party central.

Review: George Kelly aka DJ Butcher runs nu-disco label Chopshop. He's also one half of Captain Futuro, which is either a cape-sporting superhero (is he the legs or the top half?) or an obscure music act. Anyway, here he is spearheading the revival of Go-Go, an 80s hip-hop offshoot which has not been heard of much since a bunch of hits appeared on Now That's What I Call Music 7. "Get Out Your Seat" is a female-led chant-a-long featuring killer slap bass. Elsewhere highlights include the intensely funky "Hit Back" and the bonkers percussion freakout that is "Cranking At The Go-Go".

More Cowbell - (5:50) 120 BPM

Review: There are two kinds of people in this world - the kind that hear "Happy Moog" and go 'oh it's Madison Avenue' and the kind who go "ah! I see he's retweaked Pino d'Angio's Italo Disco classic 'Ma Quale Idea'). If you're in the former camp, get back to disco school on the double! Still, Madison Avenue sampled it too and it proves that you can't keep a good bassline down! "More Cowbell" hilariously takes Christopher Walken's classic SNL sketch and sets to it a very familiar deep disco house bassline. A double whammy of classics.

Open Your Eyes - (5:44) 106 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Parisian producer DJ Moar has built up a reputation for the quality of his filter-heavy house reinterpretations of disco classics. Here he flips the script, delivering a trio of chunky, synth-heavy re-edits of electrofunk and P-funk jams. There's much to admire about the jaunty guitars, heavy synth bass and spiraling electronic melodies of "Boogie 2000", and the delay-laden horns, clipped guitars and bouncy rhythm of "Jewel Groove". Best of all, though, is "Open Your Eyes", a jumpy reinterpretation of a forgotten mid '80s soul/synth-pop gem that makes much of the original's lazy trumpet, ricocheting percussion and sturdy synth bass.

Review: Chopshop's Undercover Operations imprint has tended to explore floor-friendly disco rubs and house dubs. However for this newie by Fatneck, the source material for these edits journey into poppier territory: "Sandy Haired Seppaku" takes the clenched-buttock cocaine-funk of Inxs' Suicide Blonde and loops it until you find yourself dancing on tables in some bar or other. Elsewhere the mighty Prince gets worked over twice: first on the sped up electro-pop of Controversy ("Purple Kerfuffle") and Lets Work which gets teased out into the eight minute long elastic funk jam "Let's Twerk".

Review: Back once again with more heavyweight jams, it's the man with the dodgy name; yes it's Fingerman time again! This time we get the laconic slouch funk of ""Tootin" which comes complete with possibly the most chilled out rap of all time! Elsewhere, "Your Love" is head-nodding 70s wah-wah guitar laden soul and "Phoenix" ends things on disco diva high.

Review: In certain sections of society a 'beard' is a euphemism for someone who helps another to disguise their true identity. In the case of this EP, it appears that Groove Motion have renamed their source material to (musically) do just that: "Girl" is a competent electro-house re-run of Freeez's 1983 hit, I.O.U., the origins of hazy retro houser "Yats" are a little more shady (but it's sound evokes the period that gave us early Omar) and finally "Shame Its A" is a big hearty mash-up of Monie Love and what sounds like "He's The Greatest Dancer" by Chic.

Review: Last time we heard from Aussie producer Jad Lee (and his mythical LadyBoy) he was proving his house credentials with an excellent EP of warming deepness on Toy Tonics. Here, he switches focuses, moving into the world of the sneaky re-edit with an excellent EP of scalpel jobs and sample-heavy jams for Undercover Operations. Lead cut "What Sound" is particularly good, offering a quietly anthemic re-cut of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66's "For What It's Worth". There's plenty more to get excited about, though, from the enveloping, wide-eyed deep disco soul of "Time For Love", to the heavy percussion and even heavier pianos of "Loopy Alligator".

Review: Portuguese nu-funk fella Mr Bird doesn't hang around; having only just recently dropped the long player 'Know Your Rodents", he's already back with this new two tracker. "Sun Beams Rising" is an impeccable slice of Balaerica all sustained tension and sultry sunset grooves, oh and some seriously badass synth lines. "Telephonik" is less seductive, but goes for a perky, jazzier electro-funk jam that's certainly pleasant enough.

Voodoo Whiskey - "Overdosed" - (6:51) 112 BPM
from $1.49
Review: DJ Butcher's sneaky Undercover Operations imprint is always good value, especially for those looking for fattened up versions of obscure electrofunk jams. There's a pair of those on this excellent three-tracker, alongside the low-slung dub disco pulse of Voodoo Whiskey's standout "Overdosed" (check out the rubbery bassline and simmering strings, for starters). NBDM's "Use The Stuff You Loose" is arguably the pick, featuring as it does the twin attractions of bold horns and a killer synth bassline, along with some choice vocal loops and picturesque electronic melodies. That said, the heavily filtered '80s soul blast of Carrot Green & Monsieur M's "Overdsed" is also pretty tasty, sounding like an early Rocco Raimundo production. It's certainly pretty darn sensual.

Review: On this single, P Sol has goes on a dreamy, floaty house excursion. "Time Is Up" features multi-layered female vocals that weave in and out of breathy atmospherics, all floating on a rolling beat that bears a faint whiff of the legendary Jungle Jazz drum break. A dub version is also supplied for those who prefer their groove uninterrupted by vocals.

Emotion (edit) - (7:16) 115 BPM

Review: Given how many re-edit releases he's had over the last few years, you have to wonder whether Rayko will soon run out of fresh scalpel material. Thankfully, he's not reached the 'barrel-scraping' stage, as this breezy two-tracker proves. "Enjoy Your Life" is the epitome of summery disco-soul, all shuffling beats, addictive vocals, darting strings and wiggly funk guitars; it's the sort of thing that should be booming out of a boat party soundsystem somewhere in the Adriatic. "Emotion", meanwhile, sees Rayki return to his love of electrofunk drums, turning a synth bass-laden disco jam into a touchy-feely instrumental delight.

Review: With a moniker like Shit Hot Soundsystem, you better be sure your productions can live up to the name, and thankfully, they're no slouch. While rumours that "Disco Bukowski" is in fact a tribute to the late American writer Charles Bukowski have so far proved unfounded, there's one thing we can be sure of - it's a mean disco edit filled with thick, low-slung analogue boogie bass, cheeky guitar licks and glouriously filtered vocals. Similarly great is "Gandalf The Party Wizard", a fantastic '70s style number which will have everyone on their feet.

Review: According to Google, The Silver Rider is an Austrian producer of "high quality drinks". Or, in this case, the latest mystery edit fiend to contribute to Chopshop's ever-reliable Undercover Operations imprint (for the record, he's based in Brooklyn). There's much to admire about his flowing, floor-friendly disco rubs, from the hands-raised funkiness of "Feeeelings" (available in "Slo" and even more anthemic "original boogie edit" forms), to the off-kilter, Cumbia-influenced rhythms and late night disco hustle of "Ariya". Best of all, though, is "Burro E Somburro", a perfectly pitched foray into groovy Latin funk territory with just enough disco chops to impress the heads.

Review: Newcastle's Kaayli Williams is going back to his roots for his latest release, "Rooftop BBQ". Yes, Undercover Operations first featured Williams under his Voodoo Whiskey guise on a split EP and now he's back with them for his own, full solo release that boasts three new tracks. "Blue For You" kicks things off with a slo-mo 4/4 beat under some filtered jazzy/soul loops, "Brass Monkeys" is a perkier, but still linear, affair - tight loops of slap bass and clean guitar licks and finally "Machine Green" marries tough beats to some mean low-slung funkness.
