Review:
The marvellous PAN kicks starts 2013 with yet another unusual and relentless medley of deranged sonic brutality. This time it's a debut release from Jar Moff, an elusive Athenian who has put together a vast landscape of melodies, bridging the gap between harsh noise and gentle, desolate harmonics. Both sides of the wax plate are a near fifteen minutes each and in all honesty, it's a rather daunting task to condense them into suitable words: the first side "Tziaitzomanasou" is so diverse that it could almost represent different scenes of a film, where broken shards of glass and spine-chilling screams rapidly evolve into desolate synth keys, only to be swallowed once more by a merciless wave of sparse crackles, bubbling glitches and field recordings. The title track "Commercial Mouth" retains a similar superficial coating of organic noises and sinister arrangements, except this time the heart of the piece is embedded in a musical, almost jazzy vibe. Its looped samples contain a myriad of musical strands, from trumpets to synthesizers and drums - it's an ingenious reincarnation of what happens when classical styles meet with the sheer force of the world's many sonic facets. Warmly recommended.

Review:
What better way to start the year than with a new collaboration from two artists that truly embody techno's answer to noise. Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Vatican Shadow aka Dominick Fernow under his lesser known but equally enthralling Prurient alias join forces to conceive a quasi-LP of brutal force and startling creativity. JK Flesh unleashes the gore with the relatively brief but startling metallic shuffles of "Fear Of Fear" but goes crazy on us with "Deceiver", a seriously powerful bundle of breaked-out rave drums emanating from mounds of noise hiss and ominous synthesizer tones. "Obedient Automaton" is another short but effective palette of sound design which aptly opens Fernow's "Entering The Water", an utterly dystopian vision of techno. Finally, "I Understand You" takes things down a notch and proposes a gentler, more pensive view on the rough, patchy tape works of these two sound designers.

Review:
It's rare these days that you have a spare 90 minutes to focus on an album, but Techno Primitivism is one of those albums that makes you want to change your lifestyle accordingly. Everything about this new album from Juju & Jordash breathes class, showcasing a blend of music that's fully representative of the Amsterdam based duo's styles and influences. At 15 tracks deep, the full beauty of Techno Primitivism will undoubtedly reveal itself slowly, the cheeky misnomer of the title hinting at Gal & Jordan's often revealed humour. Opening in grand style with the triple suite of "Stoplight Loosejaw", "Diatoms" and "Backwash", the duo set a hazy, atmospheric tone that remains throughout, with brief machine funk interludes such as "Slow Boat To Haifa" and "Rogue Wave" in between longer improvised explorations. Favourites on this album change with every listen, but you can't deny the potency of tracks such as "Powwow" or the Magic Mountain High referencing "Track David Would Play" or the superbly titled "Dr Strangepork". One of the albums of this year, without doubt!
