Review: 'Unknown' anonymously contacted lots of blogs a while back, to introduce their new 'hush hush' side project. It could be a hoax of course, but that didn't stop everybody from here to Timbuktu (including Ellie Goulding) raving about it. In fact it's the latter's involvement that's led to speculation that it's actually the work of her recent beau, Skrillex. Who knows for sure, but what isn't in doubt is the quality of the music. #001 is a slow tropical affair, with a constant thumping kick and deep-in-the-Amazon atmospherics. Elsewhere we have the warped R&G(litch) of #002 (complete with 'ethereal' female vocals, wink wink) and the Actress-aping weirdness of #004.

Whether they were aiming for a secret agent feel to proceedings we're not sure, what we do know is that this EP contains four brilliant productions all with unique and captivating qualities to make them singles in their own right. German Ulrich Schnauss locks horns with label owner ASC and across all the tracks there is a clear influence from both individual sounds. Blissful soundscapes that have a lovely warmth and musical depth. Perhaps not for every dancefloor, but save these for sun-sets and sun-rises and your onto a winner, with '77' and 'Theta' being our top picks.
