From Boys Noize to Fever Ray; DJ Hell to Munk, the second Juno electro house podcast has something for everyone. For this mix we’ve teamed up with Ian Robinson, resident spinner at Trailer Trash, one of London’s most respected electro nights.
You can subscribe to this podcast – and the entire archive of Juno podcasts – for free by clicking here. We’ve also collated all of the tracks used in the mix into one nice little chart at Juno Download.
It’s that time of year again – the DJ Mag Best of British Awards 2009 are upon us. We are very proud to have won the “Best Record Store” category for the past two years – and we’d like your help to make it a hat-trick!
It’s a star-studded list of nominees in the other categories this year, with Jesse Rose, Sinden, Will Saul, Steve Lawler and Ralph Lawson all nominated for Best DJ, while Skream, Jamie Jones, the Nextmen, Silicone Soul and King Roc are all in line for the Best Producer gong.
Be one of the first to watch the super slo-mo video for the new Bot’Ox single “Blue Steel”, directed by Körner Union.
Bot’Ox is one of many side projects for French label owner and music tastemaker Cosmo Vitelli, in partnership with Benjamin Boguet(better known as one half of Tekel). Their last single “Crashed Cadillac” was one of the highlights from I’m A Cliche’s Moments of a Crisis compilation from earlier this year.
The track “Blue Steel” will be released on vinyl and 12″ on November 9.
This latest effort is a real slow burner, with the misty voice of Anna Jean flowing over top of lo-fi melodies and blistering rhythms. We’ve also heard the flip side for the release – “Bearded Lady Motorcycle Show” – which is a more aggressive electro growler.
Artist: Hot Toddy Title: I Need Love Label: Eskimo Genre: Disco/ Nu-Disco Format: Digital (Juno exclusive), 12″ Buy From:Juno Records,Juno Download
Belgian label Eskimo teased us with “I Need Love’s” inclusion on the superb Cosmic Balearic Beats Volume 2 mix a few months back, and now Hot Toddy’s slow burning disco gem gets a full release.
Hot Toddy is Chris Todd, Nottingham-based guitarist and part of the production team behind Crazy P, and his first solo release in three years is a dark, moody piece of disco-noir.
Ron Basejam’s deep vocal takes the track to another level, while the typically brilliant dub mix by Morgan Geist sees a deep, rumbling baseline bounce off twangy key stabs.
Artist: Various Title: Andrew Weatherall vs The Boardoom Volume 2 Label: Rotters Golf Club Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco, Minimal/Tech House Format: CD, Digital Buy From:Juno Records
British electronic music legend Andy Weatherall is pretty busy right now, what with releasing his debut solo album, producing the superlative second Fuck Buttons album, wowing clubbers with his all encompassing DJ sets and maintaining the most impressive moustache in the business.
Eschewing the chance of a well deserved breather, Wevvers has instead decided to unleash the second volume of his collaborations and productions with the ever-mysterious Boardroom collective on his Rotters label. As with most of the material on last years inaugural volume, this collection of slow burning electronic disco and techno chuggers is primed for the dancefloor as opposed to home listening.
Whilst Weatherall’s productions are most immediate, the horror disco of Brother Johnston’s “Travelling Disco” also stands out, while Rotters Golf Club mainstay Tim Fairplay provides what proves to be the highlight with “U Know U Jack”, an awesome slice of throw back house replete with cascading 808 drums and sinister synth lines.
Artist: Deniz Kurtel Title: Whispers Label: Wolf & Lamb Genre: Minimal/Tech House, Deep House Format: Digital Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download
One of the labels of 2009, Wolf & Lamb has brought us retro-inspired gems from Jamie Jones and his side project with Lee Foss, Hot Natured, Seth Troxler and the effortlessly smooth Soul Clap. Now label owners Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi have expanded their roster with the addition of Deniz Kurtel, one of electronic music’s rare female producers working on a breed of deep house and techno.
Her Whisper EP presents a threefold onslaught of subtly magnetic songs, where the title track features a floating melody interlaced with softly abstract vocals over a catchy bassline. “Fall” plays around a simple drum pattern and a dark breakdown whilst “Stop Trying” is a more complexly percussive piece.
When the final copies of their first 7” collaboration started fetching £150 in eBay, Geordie duo Smoove/Turrell knew they were doing something right.
The resulting album Antique Soul – released earlier this year on Jalapeno – positively brimmed with the pair’s passion for northern soul and funk. Now they’ve returned with a remix package for “Beggarman”, one of many highlights from the debut album.
The pair’s funk-infused disco is given the remix treatment by Crazy P, Basement Freaks and Tim Shaw, while Smoove chips in with his own rework of the track. A real treat for the digital crate digger.
Artist: GusGus Title: Thin Ice remixes Label: Kompakt Genre: Minimal/Tech House Format: Digital (Juno Exclusive) Buy From:Juno Download
Esteemed techno troupe GusGus return with their second Kompakt digital release for 2009. Lifted from their album 24/7, “Thin Ice” is a worthy follow up to their popular “Add This Song” release.
The slow-building pressure of the video edit sits alongside four new remixes, each exploring melodic, deep and vocal techno sounds. Analog People In A Digital World keep it hypnotic and driving, Wareika adds some lounge funk and Aussie ex-pat Ben Frost delivers a focused but soulful minimal odyssey.
Remute’s mix, exclusive to Juno, packs the biggest punch with a housey break and big room drums. Expect deep moods and powerful vocals.
Artist: Annie Title: Don’t Stop Label: Smalltown Supersound Genre: Electro House Format: CD Buy From:Juno Records
Don’t Stop is the second studio album by Norwegian songstress Annie, self-described purveyor of pop with strange edges. Featuring production work from long term collaborators Richard X and Xenomania, the album’s release was pushed back from its original date in early 2008, now seeing daylight on her new label Smalltown.
There are a number of highlights: Fans of Girls Aloud will appreciate “My Love is Better” – the British popsters lend the backing vocals, while the albums standout track and first single, “I know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me” chugs along with a memorable chorus over an electro bassline.
The end result is an album which is undoubtedly sincere – Annie’s music has definitely evolved since Anniemal. It will be huge anywhere where electro-pop rules, from the bedrooms of teenage girls to the dancefloors of the club scene.
Clouded Vision consists of Turbo Recordings’ Matt Walsh and partner in crime Steve Cook, who in the past have donned their disco hats to remix the likes of Moby, Brodinski, We Have Band and The Golden Filter.
The London-based duo bring us their first full EP, Neon Rain, a superb piece of acid-tinged disco, already championed by the likes of DFA’s Shit Robot and French tastemaker Cosmo Vitelli.
The Astronomer (aka Alex Egan of Skull Juice) chips in with a superb, pounding remix, while Dissident’s Niallist offers a more cosmic take on the original.
Artist: Danton Eeprom Title: Give Me Pain (Give Me More) Label: InFine Genre: Techno Format: 7″, digital Buy From:Juno Records, Juno Download
It’s quite surprising that someone who got their break in the Berlin electro scene would make something that on first listen would sound so French, albeit via musical stops in a couple of Californian locales.
Give me Pain (Give me More) by Danton Eeprom begins like LA’s Neptunes covering something on Parisian 80’s Mutant-Jazz label Ze (perhaps Lizzy Mercier Descloux) and ends like a mis-remembered San-Franciscan psyche-organ freakout.
The journey from one continent to the other is enabled by Eeprom’s raw bass-grooving being subtly and consistently interrupted by horn and key infused new-jazz build ups, reminiscent of 4 hero. With some new-wave delay and luscious melodic flourishes, Eeprom manages to combine his underground influences with a dark pop sensibility that becomes at once familiar and progressive.
In this section we’ll be bringing you regular tutorial and reviews on all the latest DJ & studio equipment. To kick things off, Juno’s resident technical expert Ben Daly gives the new Akai LPD8 controller the once-over.
Everyone at Juno HQ has been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the LPD8 controller from Akai Professional. Based on Akai’s MPC line, the LPD8 laptop pad controller is a bus powered USB-MIDI controller for musicians, producers, DJs and other music creators.
Artist: Hudson Mohawke Title: Butter Label: Warp Records Genre: Leftfield Format: Digital, 2 x LP Buy From:Juno Records, Juno Download
The keenly anticipated debut from Hudson Mohawke is one of the most arresting albums of 2009. It’s hard to put a finger on the young Glaswegian’s style – there’s traces of dubstep, hip-hop, R & B and electronica strewn across the album, without any apparent regard for established musical patterns.
The result is fascinating – a restless, out-of-phase ride that heads in one direction, darts to the next, before coming back again. Hud Mo – a former DMC champ in his teenage years – could be the dubstep/hip-hop equivalent of Warp Records stable mate Jackson & His Computer Band – himself a true master of glitchy, cut and paste electronica.

Sweden is a hotbed for quality techno producers: the likes of Adam Beyer, Tomas Andersson and Hakan Lidbo all reside in Stockholm. Add to that list the Dahlback cousins Jesper and John, who (on special occasions) join forces to become Hugg & Pepp, combining a quirky sense of humour with a penchant for banging techno. After releasing material on Dahlback Records they were snapped up by Tiga’s fashionable imprint Turbo, with the Sweet Rosie EP proving a huge hit on European dance floors. They spoke to JunoPlus editor Aaron Coultate…
