Last week Hobo played in Italy and Spain, had a blast, and learned one of life’s valuable lessons (don’t party on an empty stomach). In his second post the techno starlet takes us on board his trip to Manchester for the Minus Warehouse Project gig. We also have a very cool teaser to promote his forthcoming album.

Inimitable London five piece Hot Chip will release a new album next year, and have been carefully staggering each announcement about the release.
The latest piece of goss comes in the shape of the official tracklist (see below). The album, titled One Life Stand, will be released in February 2010.

This week our technical guru Ben Daly runs an expert eye over the M-Audio Torq Mixlab Digital DJ System.
Artist: Zombie Disco Squad, Jesse Rose
Title: Jesse Rose presents Playing Around Again
Label: Made To Play
Genre: Minimal House/Tech House
Format: CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download
Berlin based kingpin Jesse Rose has been completely on point recently. Over the past 12 months he’s put his considerable industry cred behind some standout underground house and techno producers; Iditotproof, Oliver$ and Zombie Disco Squad among others. It’s all paid off. Made To Play has released some of this year’s more memorable tribal-tech and bass-heavy house EPs.
Made To Play has stamped its mark on the clubbing consciousness of ‘09, and this double compilation album is a deliciously moody celebration of the post-Crookers era we live in.
Curated by Jesse Rose, it’s a two disc compilation featuring London upstarts Zombie Disco Squad in the mix on side 1, and an almost identical unmixed side 2 for DJ’s.
It’s a role call of essential artists and tunes for any self-respecting back room vandal. De-tuned filters and firetwirling basslines sit alongside straight up funky and glitchy tech-house. The tone of the release is carefully devised – no minimal, no gypsy horns – just screaming peaks and subbed-out drops. Plenty of sidechain and saws, just done in tasteful two-oh-nine fashion.
The blog-raiders among us will have heard alot of the tunes on show here, but there’s some real treats to be found for the more casual tech-house observer. Highlights are Jan Driver’s house-wrecker ‘Rat Alert’, Idiotproof’s ‘The Deacon’ and the double king-hit of Riva Starr’s ‘Squash’ and ‘Snatch!’

People Get Real is Simon Lister and Peter Wilson, resident DJs at Wax:On (Voted No2 Night in the UK, behind fabric, Mixmag 07) and Reclaim The Dancefloor, the summer success story which rocked Eden Ibiza to the rafters during its first season this year. Juno Plus caught up with them on the week they launched their new track, “Robin Hood” on MagicBag to ask them a few questions regarding DJing, production and life in general…

In the second part of our series of classic interviews, the DJhistory team have dug out an interview with Vince Aletti, the very first journalist to cover the emerging disco scene in 1970s New York. In this article he speaks about going to the Loft for the first time, hanging out in Larry Levan’s DJ booth and how disco went overground.
Interview by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton in New York City, 12.10.98.

Strictly Rhythm’s earliest DJ mixes – featuring the likes of ‘Little’ Louis Vega, Armand Van Helden, Tony Humphries and Lil Louis – are being re-released to celebrate the label’s 20th anniversary.

Title: Kitsuné Maison Volume 8
Label: Kitsuné
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco
Format: CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download
Now in its eighth volume, the Kitsuné Maison series has carved its niche scooping up electro talent from across the globe, a feat that is becoming increasingly difficult in a day and age when the public can watch every part of a bands (often awkward) gestation on the internet, and the hype surrounding new artists has reached unsustainable levels.
Still, each Kitsuné compilation has unearthed a gem or two – the Mogs’ “Kelly Blame” from Kitsune X release being a prime example – and it’s often the little oddities that make these compilations a worthy addition to the collection.
This latest effort is a shamelessly uplifting affair, seeing the catchy pop of British upstarts My Tiger My Timing and Chew Lips nestled alongside Siriusmo’s thought-provoking electronica and sweaty dancefloor fodder from the former Riot in Belgium man Beni (touched up by Harvard Bass).
There’s some highly-anticipated new material from Melbourne trio Midnight Juggernauts, with “New Technology”, the first single of their upcoming album, a notable inclusion. Meanwhile the lo-fi stylings of New Jersey’s Memory Tapes has to be one of the album’s highlights.
Only time will tell how this will stand up against previous Kitsuné releases – it’s always interesting to note which acts become huge and which drift into obscurity – but it’s a safe bet a fair smattering of these artists will go on to bigger things.

Artist: Golden Filter
Title: Thunderbird
Label: Dummy
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco
Format: 12″, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download
In a day and age when a band’s longevity seems to decrease with every rushed track, mystique can be a rare commodity, but nu-disco outfit Golden Filter have it by the bucketload.
Original releases from the New York duo have always been tantalisingly scarce, and their long-awaited new single “Thunderbird” doesn’t disappoint.
The track, which references the mythological bird of healing and purification in North American folklore, has a shimmery-yet-robust sound that the duo have perfectly complimented with lead singer Penelope’s sultry monologues and a DFA-inspired funk bassline.

Every month Juno collates the charts and glowing reviews from the world’s leading music magazines. Here’s a summary of the picks for November:
Check out the new video clip for Runaway’s superb remix of Azari & III’s retro-inspired house anthem “Hungry For The Power” (out now on 12″ at Juno Records).
Artist: Datarock
Title: The Pretender
Label: Nettwerk
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco
Format: Digital
Buy From: Juno Download
An anthemic discofied romp is the latest offering from Datarock’s sophomore album, Red, and it’s coming to bore a hole in your head to settle in for days.
That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, though, considering how fluent these permanently tracksuited Norwegians are in the language of hooky melodies and unforgettable lyrics (a night flight to Uranus anyone? No?).
While their vocals tend to have a novelty feel about them, the pair’s impeccable production work always carries them across the line, making The Pretender a catchy little single.
But the remixes are where things really get interesting. DFA’s Holy Ghost! of course turns the handclap funk-disco aesthetic way up, while airy Brooklyn trio, Chairlift, opt for a more synth-heavy feel, serving up an unpredictable, momentarily jazzercised rendition.
And finally, some moody vocals, cosmic loops, and house piano stabs see CFCF bring some subtle drama to this surprisingly versatile single.
