Philta – Fire From The Sky review

Philta – Fire From The Sky review

Artist: Philta
Title: Fire From The Sky
Label:4 Lux Holland
Genre: Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Format: Digital
Buy From: Juno Download

Vienna-based nu-jazzers Philta have really pulled something special out of the bag on their latest release “Fire From The Sky”. Similar to Herbert or very early Moloko, they ooze freshness and creativity and aren’t afraid to do things a little different – which pays off when the tunes are of this calibre. Opener “How Far” sets the bar high, with broken beats and wah-wah’d synths creating a soundbed for vocalist Fleur to lay down a seriously soulful vocal. Rapper and singer J-Todd joins in on title track “Fire From The Sky”, which is a thumping yet slick new-school Hip-Hop tune that makes Outkast seem like a distant memory.

Elsewhere, the Josip Klobucar mix of “Dry Your Eyes” is a berserk bit of mid-tempo fun, with the vocal struggling through a sea of strings and synths, as well as some punchy studio drums. The original is also included here too and sounds equally awesome with some chopped up Amen-soundalike drums crashing away throughout. On a different vibe, “Don’t Waste” uses a simple two-chord pattern and electro beat to devastating effect, again with Fleur working wonders over the top of it all. With instrumentals available of all the big tunes, this could be an album that will stay with you for a long time and demand repeat listening.

Various – Freerange Records presents Colour Series: Pink 07 review

Artist: Various
Title: Freerange Records presents Colour Series: Pink 07
Label: Freerange
Genre: Deep House
Format: 12″, CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records (unmixed CD, 12″ sampler), Juno Download

Consistently strong purveyors of quality house music, Freerange are back with another of their colour-based compilations. The Makam remix of “Attica” kicks things off in style, as breezy drums bolster a Rhodes riff that sounds uncannily like the intro of Roy Ayres’ “We Live In Brooklyn Baby”.

Mr Morning’s “Slave” takes things a little deeper, using some expansive techy pads to build a huge sound around some minimal Afro-beat drums. Freerange head honcho Jimpster contributes a mix of Milton Jackson’s “The Rhythm Track” and the effect is similarly deep and devastating. Pezzner also gets the remix treatment, this time from Justin Martin, who peppers his slow-building “Brooklyn New York” with cut-up vocals and subtle, whisper quiet sirens.

There’s so much quality on show here, it’s hard to pick a favourite from the 12 tracks.     Two standouts though are Nikola Gala’s “I Get U”, which builds with a timeless female vocal loop, and then swaps it for percussion to set the groove off perfectly. And closing track “I Wanna Love You” by Elmar Schubert and Vincenzo also deserves checking out – a heart-stopping slow Balearic number with a cloying vocal and tons of warm synth tones. All in all, another quality comp from Freerange.

Ones to Watch (No 7): Chamboché

by Juno Plus on 26.02.2010 at 09:00am

It’s probably fair to say that no one actually knows the lyrics for Blur’s seminal hit “Song 2” (‘woo hoo’ aside). So Nottingham producer Sam Williams is not alone in admitting he made the words up as he sang along. What sets him apart from the rest of us is that he used the name to form a production moniker – Chamboché (actual lyric: “I got my head checked…by a jumbo jet”)  – and even better, has gone onto make some lovely disco house in the vein of the Revenge, Mark E et al. Lets us introduce Chamboché…

Various – Far Out: Jazz and Afro Funk review

Various – Far Out: Jazz and Afro Funk review

Artist: Various
Title: Far Out: Jazz and Afro Funk
Label: Far Out
Genre: Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Format: Digital
Buy From: Juno Download

Dedicated specialists of all things Brazilian, the Far Out label has been turning out new diamonds from the country since 1994. They’ve built up an impressive range of fans in the process, including Gilles Peterson, Andy Votel and 4Hero to name just a few. This release is an excellent way into their back catalogue, with so many funky gems to choose from. Marcos Valle’s “Poweride” for example combines old-school drum machines twisted into a Samba beat with some airy, flute-led melodies.

Troubleman (aka Mark Pritchard) works up a beat to die for on “Strike Hard”, using ferocious and rollicking snares up against dub-echoed brass for a highly original tune. Grupo Batuque’s “Keyzer” on the other hand is more of a band jam, chaotic and groove-centered complete with Hammond organ solos.

Jose Roberto Bertrami’s “80’s Time” will remind fusion fans of Roy Ayres, as he scats out a lead melody just like the vibes legend. But the real jewel in the crown is the Offworld remix of Azymuth’s cover of Herbie Hancock’s seminal “Chameleon”. There would be a million ways to handle such a classic badly, but this comes out really well, adding some distressed and lingering string synths to make that famous riff seem even more poignant. A great compilation from a venerable label – and a great way to check out a different side of Brazilian music.

Various – Boogybytes vol. 5 mixed by Seth Troxler review

Various – Boogybytes vol. 5 mixed by Seth Troxler review

Artist: Various
Title: Boogybytes vol. 5 mixed by Seth Troxler
Label: BPitch
Genre: Techno, Tech-House
Format: CD
Buy From: Juno Records

I love DJ mixes. Why? Because it’s such an ideal platform to express one’s personality and attitude through track selection, layering, and flow. Seth Troxler nails all these components head on with this suberb mix, following on from Kiki, Sascha Funke, Modeselektor and Ellen Allien with his instalment of the Boogybytes series. Seth, having recently relocated to Berlin from Michigan said of his mix: “I wanted to do something which would set itself apart from all the trends, and yet paint a picture of this city and portray it the way I experience it”.

Having seen Troxler DJ three times, I can tell you that Boogybytes is like a real-life Troxler set; you never quite know what’s coming next, but you know its bumpin’-ness is going to make you smile.  In fact, Troxler’s spoken word intro about life and the party dialogue in The Royal We track that follows may even make you laugh a bit as they build the tone for the madness that ensues.

Transitioning from the deep house of Craig Smith & The Revenge to the dubby jazz-tinged, muted soul vocals of Baeka’s killer tune “Right At It”, Troxler always keeps things moving.  He also pays homage to the North American side of minimal with an old Richie Hawtin remix along with choice tracks from Alexi Delano, Heartthrob and Jabberjaw- yet another pseudonym for Spectral Sound labelmate Matthew Dear.

There are so many high points in the mix, but among the most notable are the phenomenal future classic “Birds and Souls” and Troxler’s own remix of Fever Ray’s “Seven”. We won’t even spoil the two killer end cuts – the last of which is one of Troxler’s personal favourites.  After all, that would take away from the “I wonder what’s coming next” element that Seth crafts so well.

I love DJ mixes. Why? Because it’s such an ideal platform to express one’s personality and attitude through track selection, layering, and flow. Seth Troxler nails all these components head on with this suberb mix , the first from a non-Berlin Bpitch DJ (Kiki, Sascha Funke, Modeselektor and Ellen Allien did the previous Boogybytes). Seth, having recently relocated to Berlin from Michigan explained his mix, “I wanted to do something which would set itself apart from all the trends, and yet paint a picture of this city and portray it the way I experience it”.

Azuni – Here You Come review

Azuni – Here You Come review

Artist: Azuni
Title: Here You Come
Label: Drumpoet Community
Genre: Deep House
Format: 12″ Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download

Gianni Siravo and Sven Lacoste have both been around individually for some time, but it is as the joined force of Azuni that they have enjoyed the most recognition. 2008’s debut album, City Look, released on Agnès’ Sthlmaudio imprint introduced the duo to the house world in style. Now, their debut release on Drumpoet Community is looking to propel them further into the limelight with two big, groovy tracks of Detroit influenced house that are stripped down to the max.

“Here You Come” sees simple and pumping grooves build from the ever present riff. It twists and turns in hypnotic fashion, with swirling melodies cushioned by warm synthesizer pads. The hushed vocal takes you straight back inside the warehouses of early days of Detroit, completing that authentic old school sound that resides throughout this record. “Believe’s” vocal is from a similar vein. At first it stabs away in disjointed fashion, but as the track builds it develops into full lines of speech.  The track is a slower, jacking number, once again built around a simple riff. The two note organ motif keeps the simplicity and the deep kick drum adds the bumping house sound that lends itself to the earlier part of the night where the dancefloor begins to build nicely.

As Drumpoet Community’s reputation for quality house continues to grow, so too does Azuni’s production talents. If the “Here You Come EP” is anything to go by, we can be sure that there is plenty more to come from both label and artist.

Various – Work It Baby 10th Anniversary review

Various – Work It Baby 10th Anniversary review

Artist: Various
Title: Work It Baby 10th Anniversary
Label: Work It Baby France
Genre: Funky House/Vocal House/Disco House/Soulful House
Format: CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download

Kris Menace has been a busy man. Last year’s efforts saw him stride past other stalwarts of the ‘French touch’ community. From turning out a batch of massive remixes (his euphoric space disco twist on Moby’s “Ooh Yeah” was particularly memorable) for everyone under the sun, delivering a mighty big-room WTF to his critics with the Scaler EP to releasing his own three CD retrospective compilation “Idiosyncracies”. All are apt reminders of why he’s been kicking-ass and chewing gum for so long. Makes you wonder why everyone paid so much attention to that Lifelike bro for a while.

In between dominating the house scene with his own productions, Menace finds the time to run two record labels; Compuphonic (for his own releases) and Work It Baby for developing new acts. Specialising in all things French and housey, Work It Baby has been dropping smooth, sidechained fire from the likes of Falke, Patrick Alavi and Serge Santiago for 10 years. So why not release a gratuitously awesome birthday compilation to remind the kiddies who’s boss.

Alongside big ticket tunes such as Alavi’s “Power” and Moonbootica’s “Strobelight” you’ll find a swag of unreleased and exclusive tunes from Menace, Falke, Xinobi, Jaunt/Vincent Fries and Charlie Fanclub. Princess Superstar steps in to contribute an exclusive vocal version of Serge Santiago’s “Trilogyyy” jam, “Apocalypse Rock”.

Work It Baby’s back catalogue is fully accounted for, making this an invaluable purchase for any house aficionado, it’s an instant injection of classic, disco-tinged french house and more modern ‘French touch’ house plus the odd electro-banger. Out of the bonus tracks, it’s great to see Charlie Fanclub blazing back to form with “The Rise Of The Colleseus”. The other various exclusives from Menace, Savage and Falke are a welcome nod to classic days of nu-disco and filter house, a sound that’s just as relevant today as it was last year. And the year before that. And the year before that…

Brandon Miles and Tricky Pat – Sulpher EP review

Brandon Miles and Tricky Pat – Sulpher EP review

Artist: Brandon Miles and Tricky Pat
Title: Sulphur EP
Label: Temper D Productions
Genre: Drum and Bass, Leftfield
Format: Digital
Buy From: Juno Download

Putting something a little different out there for D&B DJs, London spinner Temper D offers up this breathtaking EP from Brandon Miles and Tricky Pat. From Portland and Vermont respectively, these two have an innovative and refreshing take on the genre, a million miles away from the mountains of formulaic drum and bass.

As Temper himself says: “They can really have an amazing effect at parties, provided you mix out of them with something with a bit of energy”. If only all label bosses were so thoughtful. Lead track “Sulpher” has a stuttering Dubstep-styled beat with some awesome beatless sections for stunning mixouts.

“Pip Squeak” will again work wonders in sets, coming in with a half-tempo swing that doesn’t feel lazy but instead provides a classy way to switch up styles, with plenty of crescendos that are begging to be mixed out of. “Radio X” and “Sex In Slime” are two seriously dark and twisted tunes that the right DJ could deploy with huge effect. Having already been played by London Electricity, Doc Scott, Raiden and of course Temper D himself, these four tracks come seriously recommended.
