Dissident. It’s a name spoken in hushed tones amongst the dance music intelligentsia, a record label that dealt exclusively in the finest underground music before it shut up shop earlier this year.
Andy Blake may have moved on to pastures new, but we were delighted to score the Dissident back catalogue on Juno Download (you can find out more about that in the Juno Plus news story here). And in classic Blake style, the releases are limited: 100 WAV downloads only will be made available. Don’t sleep on it.
There were plenty of other top releases for digital fans this week, from Jeff Mills’ Drummer 26 project, in which he pays tribute to the patrons of percussion, to the new Mark E release on Running Back, more house gems from the man they call Jus-Ed and TRG’s stunning EP on Hemlock.
Over at Juno Records, we’re still waiting for the traditional August slump in quality releases, but it just ain’t happening. This week belonged to Canadian dancefloor merchants Azari & III, and more specifically the first part of the “Reckless With Your Love” remix package, which contains that Tensnake remix plus other equally excellent offerings from Midnight Magic, the Tuff City Kids and Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt. Not to forget Kyle Hall’s shhhhh-it’s-a-white label remix of Manc band Delphic, Lone’s debut on his Magic Wire imprint, some disco gold from C.O.M.B.i and of course Cooly G’s stunning new 12″ on Hyperdub.
There were also some impressive albums floating about, such as the Future Balearica offering from boutique disco imprint Needwant, Luke Abbott’s debut on Border Community, some Rick Wilhite grooves on Rush Hour and the keenly anticipated Count & Sinden album on Domino.
As always, happy hunting.
