Nocturnal Emissions – Accumulator

by Juno Plus on 20.05.2013 at 09:18am

In 1982 Juan Atkins and Rick Davis as Cybrotron produced what’s credited as the first real electro track: “Clear”. In the same year a burgeoning industrial and experimental-noise band, Nocturnal Emissions, were producing something equally antecedent – yet musically unkempt in comparison. The Accumulator EP was first conceived a lifetime ago – 31 years to be exact – and it’s since found a way into the hands of Paul Purgas – one half of Emptyset – and his label We Can Elude Control. Purgas’ take on the release comes as a three-track EP, with an additional 23 minute live recording of Nocturnal Emissions playing the Brixton Ritzy on June 9th, 1983.

Various Artists – Other Heights White Label #Ten Series

by Juno Plus on 17.05.2013 at 15:56pm

Only a few years ago, Other Heights was drifting silently about dub techno’s sparse and vapoury soundscapes, with Alteria Percepsyne, Herbstlaub and Ohrwert its ethereal beings. But in recent times Other Heights has made out-roads from ambient and echo space dub to a sound catering for the club environment, and their introductory CD pressings now fetch collector’s prices on the internet. The Belgian label’s affection toward the various artist release continues apace on their tenth vinyl offering which is in fact spread across three separate 12″ and features some twelve artists. Label head Jorn Kerschot opted for a simultaneous discharge of all three EPs – deciding against a staggered release schedule or bundle package.

Willie Burns – Run From The Sunset

by Juno Plus on 17.05.2013 at 13:50pm

Great music is more about the ideas than the expertise with which they are executed. It’s no exaggeration to say that Willie ‘Burns’ Burnett has some great ideas, arrived at by accident than design. It helps that the general environment he operates in welcomes inspired ideas borne out of happy coincidence and a willingness to engage in a never ending guessing game. In that regard, Burns is staying true to house and techno form, following in a tradition that dates back to Phuture’s earliest experiments with the 303. Coupled with this approach is Burns’ willingness to apply the KISS principle – ‘keep it simple, stupid’ – to his ideas and concepts.

Archie Pelago – Sly Gazabo EP

by Juno Plus on 17.05.2013 at 09:51am

While Archie Pelago have been dilligently releasing EPs on a triad of international labels since 2011, it was last year’s release on Mister Saturday Night that seemed to catapult the Brooklyn trio into a heightened spotlight. Dan Hirshorn, Greg Heffernan and Zach Koeber have certainly made good use of the exposure, gaining exponential accolades with this winter’s Subway Gothic / Ladymarkers EP on Well Rounded Individuals, a stunningly complicated live recording session on Mary Anne Hobbs’ XFM Show and a slew of well-received remixes and re-workings.

Special Request – Vapour/Mindwash

by Juno Plus on 16.05.2013 at 17:23pm

When Paul Woolford’s Special Request project first appeared last year on a pair of hand stamped white labels, it only served to demonstrate how neutered the majority of modern bass music had become. Making an effortless move from techno to a hybrid of 4/4 and jungle, he drew inspiration from the music heard on pirate radio stations during his youth; although by no means the only producer doing this kind of thing right now – see also Pangaea, Pearson Sound, Beneath and Tessela – Woolford’s productions have more of a throwback feel to them which somehow make them feel genuinely like lost artifacts of the ’90s.

Laurel Halo – Behind The Green Door

by Juno Plus on 16.05.2013 at 13:48pm

After the success of her Quarantine album, Laurel Halo makes a welcome return to Hyperdub and she’s tackling that tricky premise of following up a widely praised release by veering off into completely new territory. The sunkissed lo-fi charm of the long-player has been buffed, scrubbed, pumped and delineated into a collection of four tracks that deal in nebulous stylistic traits somewhere between the ghost of dubstep and the half-life of techno, a world away from the winsome, folky tendencies Halo was readily displaying before.

Ste Spandex – EP#1

by Juno Plus on 16.05.2013 at 09:49am

While it may be somewhat lazy to refer to Manchester as the Capital of the North, it’s true to say that people from cities like Leeds, Liverpool or Newcastle are more likely to up-sticks and relocate to London to find their musical fame and fortune. Miancunians are generally less intoxicated by the auspices of ‘The Big Smoke’ and this screw-London attitude has led to Manchester rivalling the capital as a melting pot of cultures and ideas, and is why the city is one of the birthplaces of the Acid House revolution, via the much eulogised Hacienda.

Paula Temple – Colonized

by Juno Plus on 15.05.2013 at 09:00am

It’s time for a rewind. Back during the dark days of loop techno, Paula Temple stood out against the tide of one-note bores. Why? Because in 2002, she released The Speck of the Future on the Materials label. That may seem like a minor detail, but don’t forget that she was the only artist apart from owner Chris McCormack to release on the imprint and that the searing industrial fury of “Contact” was eventually licensed by Jeff Mills for his 2004 Exhibitionist mix.

Xosar – The Calling

by Juno Plus on 14.05.2013 at 09:00am

While her previous releases have stood strong on their own, when listening to Sheela Rahman’s music it’s hard to avoid that connection she has to her regular partner-in-sines, Danny ‘Wolfers’ Legowelt. Beyond the simple fact that they are a couple, with their continued touring together and shared outings as Trackman Lafonte & Bonquiqui and Xamiga last year, it’s perhaps not surprising that Wolfers’ extensive back catalogue is the most logical point of reference when mentally placing Rahman’s music in your own internal musical shelves.

Marco Shuttle – The Vox Attitude Remixes

by Juno Plus on 13.05.2013 at 17:34pm

In the hands of large scale labels, remix EPs rarely come across as anything but transparent attempts to milk a track’s popularity for all it’s worth, with the licensing of FCL’s ubiquitous 2012 cut “It’s You” by Defected accompanied by any number of unnecessary reworks the most overt recent example. At the other end of the scale there are 12”s such as this one from Eerie Records, a label founded by London dwelling Italian Marco Shuttle last year with the intention of loosely mirroring the Jeff Mills model with Axis Records.

Fishermen – Delirium Tremens

by Juno Plus on 10.05.2013 at 13:42pm

After the mind-flattening blow dealt by their debut appearance on Skudge White, Fishermen are back with another salvo of pitched-down brutalist techno for the undead dance at the end of the world. At least that’s how their clamouring concoctions feel, both on their first release and on this follow up for Kontra-Musik.

Svengalisghost – Vicious Circle

by Juno Plus on 10.05.2013 at 09:17am

Anyone who may have seen Svengalisghost performing live recently will probably have been surprised at just how unremittingly savage his performance was, especially if they were expecting the comparatively gentle analogue house he displayed on last year’s debut record for L.I.E.S. The fracas of monochromatic, jutting rhythms and serrated, mulched up synth lines that blasted out from his decrepit table of hardware seemed the antithesis of the Mind Control EP’s more vivid, rolling take on jacking hardware house.

Delta Funktionen – Sun Storm

by Juno Plus on 09.05.2013 at 10:19am

Is Niels Luinenberg the consummate multi-tasker? It’s a valid question because the young Dutch producer, much like his peer Conforce, appears to be adept at making a wide variety of styles without ever letting the quality slip. From the dubby grooves of his debut 12″ Electromagnetic Radiation  to the harder, jacking Set Up series and the deep elements of his Traces album – which also contains tough acid-laced tracks – Luinenberg’s production, like his DJing, conveys an impressive level of depth.

Hardway Bros – A/B Musique

by Juno Plus on 01.05.2013 at 09:30am

Hardway Bros aren’t exactly an enigma, but they seem to prefer the comfort of quiet corners and pitch-black basements to the full glare of publicity. They’ve never hidden their identities; we know plenty about Andrew Weatherall cohort and A Love From Outer Space co-pilot Sean Johnston, a bit about musical partner in crime Jake Davies, and next to nothing about mysterious third member Rico. But they’ve not played the media game much, either. We do know that Johnston and Davies started their musical careers as Flash Faction, making eye-watering techno oddities for Weatherall’s Sabres of Paradise, and Rico once released a brilliant rework of a familiar favourite on Pointless Edits. Aside from that, zilch.

King Midas Sound – Aroo

by Juno Plus on 30.04.2013 at 09:07am

It’s been a while since King Midas Sound graced our ears with some fresh material. While there was something of a stopgap from Hyperdub in the shape of the remix version of Waiting For You, it’s surprising to think that four years have passed since the trio of Kevin ‘The Bug’ Martin, Roger Robinson and Kiki Hitomi put together the heart-breaking collection of nourish lovers rock. Now a new single comes forth for Ninja Tune, and in true Kevin Martin style you can forget all previous form for KMS and start from scratch again.

Various Artists – Space Consortium Vol. 1

by Juno Plus on 29.04.2013 at 13:15pm

Flight Recorder Records launched last year and in a very short space of time it has managed to notch up some incredibly well received releases from Mushrooms Project, Cottam, Danny Dorado, Emil Strunz and Iron Blu aka Mickey Clarke. The latter runs Flight Recorder and is a bonafide veteran of music with a discography stretching back some 30 years – the fact Trevor Jackson included the 1981 track “Slipping Again” from his former band Naked Lunch on his Metal Dance compilation last year being a perfect example.

Kowton – TFB

by Juno Plus on 25.04.2013 at 14:05pm

Considering Kowton’s TFB is only the third release from Glasgow-based All Caps in 18 months, it seems remarkable that the label’s releases should inspire the kind of fevered online excitement usually reserved for their more well known peers in the crossover world of techno and bass. Retro 70s sci-fi typeface aside, the label’s hand-stamped aesthetic isn’t anything particularly unique, but more so than most low-key operations of its type, All Caps’ steadily increasing reputation lies in the high level of quality control that goes into the music selection process overseen by Ryan Martin, Matthew Muir and Bake – no doubt informed by their show on Glasgow’s Subcity Radio.

Gherkin Jerks – Stomp The Beat/1990

by Juno Plus on 25.04.2013 at 12:30pm

While this writer feels Larry Heard’s output has been hit-and-miss for some time – the superb 2006 cut “The Sun Can’t Compare” being the outstanding ‘hit’ in a relative sea of recent mediocrity – there’s no denying his immense contribution to the history and development of house. Of course, he’s most fondly remembered for his Mr Fingers and Fingers Inc productions, which almost single-handedly developed the blueprint for deep house as we know it today.

R-Zone – Houz Nation

by Juno Plus on 24.04.2013 at 10:30am

There’s a fine line between belief and passing trend out there in the insatiable whirlpool of names, tracks, labels, podcasts and forums which we so eagerly ingest on a day-to-day basis which is manifested through distinctive footprints of honesty and credibility.

Legowelt – Elementz Of Houz Music (Actress remixes)

by Juno Plus on 19.04.2013 at 14:30pm

Actress and Legowelt may not come across as very compatible at a glance, but they actually have quite the shared heritage. Both of their catalogues trudge through the difficult-to-pin-down territory between experimental and dance music, and each producer appears capable of balancing their introverted and extroverted sides by managing an eclectic output while retaining a hermetic loner mystique of sorts.
