Smearing The Edges with Ali Renault

by Juno Plus on 30.04.2012 at 11:43am

When faced with discussing the music of Ali Renault, it’s hard to choose where to begin. There is of course Heartbreak, his sizeable cadre of solo material and the various labels he is involved with, as well as a radio show and enduring DJ schedule. It’s perhaps for all these reasons and more that it took so long for this softly spoken cat enthusiast to release his self titled debut album – long overdue in many eyes.

A musical insight into the World Unknown

by Tony Poland on 07.11.2011 at 12:19pm

World Unknown’s rise has been well documented here at Juno Plus, with the club night recently celebrating two years of darkened dancing in a Brixton railway arch, eschewing the guest DJ route in favour of the depth of musical knowledge held by residents Andy Blake and Joe Hart. The more recent decision to launch an affiliated label of the same name has reaped rich rewards to date, with all three volumes proving to be popular amongst a vinyl buying audience hungry for more.

Despite showing support for the World Unknown endeavours to date, events have conspired to ensure the Juno Plus team are never available when the monthly party comes around. Intrigue has finally got the better of us and we’ll be attending the next party this weekend (more details on that here), so we decided to request an advance glance at what to expect from Andy and Joe at any given World Unknown night.

Anyone with a cursory knowledge of Mr Blake will know his humour and straight-talking combined with an encyclopedic knowledge of electronic music guarantees him hero status. Across the following ten selections that will be more than evident to the rest of you.

Various – Trax Re-Edited review

by Juno Plus on 07.02.2011 at 15:08pm

In the wrong hands, this collection of contemporary reworks of classic Chicago house productions could have been a distasteful mess. Indeed, the last time a similar exercise was tried – for Justin Robertson’s Art Of Acid compilation back in 2008 – the results were largely disappointing (see the Plump DJs breaks version of “Acid Tracks”).

Trax Re-Edited, thankfully, is in the right hands. Overseen from concept to delivery by the men behind the DJHistory.com website, it has the feel of a labour of love rather than a needless cash-in. You get the impression that everyone involved – particularly the vast army of producers and re-editors who’ve contributed – was acutely aware of the need to balance respect for the source material with a desire to satisfy the needs of contemporary dancefloors.

Of course, some re-edits are more successful than others. Justin Harris and Bubba & T-Bone offer relatively cosmetic tweaks on their versions of stone-cold classics “You Used To Hold Me” and “Baby Wants To Ride” (both, though, offer improved sound on the badly mastered originals). On the other side of the divide, Kink completely remakes Jack Frost’s “Clap Me”, offering up a breathless acid wig-out aimed squarely at peaktime floors. When it drops, madness will ensue.

With the quality threshold high throughout, picking individual highlights is tough. Hotel Motel’s strung-out version of Frankie Knuckles’ “It’s A Cold Cold World” is a late night delight, while JD Twitch’s pumping, peaktime take on Mr Lee’s rather silly “Pump Up Chicago” is worthy of repeat spins. Look out, too, for impeccable acid rinse-outs from Andy Blake, Leftside Wobble (whose version of “Face It” by Master C&J is a tracky bomb), Disco Bloodbath, Neville Watson and Chris Duckenfield.

Interview: Andy Blake

by Juno Plus on 22.10.2010 at 15:06pm

After manning the Dissident fort and being responsible for releasing a veritable slew of excellent releases on one sided vinyl, Andy Blake has secured a reputation as a no nonsense individual with an encyclopedic knowledge of electronic music, matched only by the massive array of vintage synths and analogue equipment housed in his South London studio.

The sadness felt amongst the vinyl buying community when Blake announced he was shutting down Dissident in December last year was palpable, though it was more than offset by his new venture, Cave Paintings, an imprint that acts as a conduit for his own stripped back house and techno productions. Despite Blake’s well documented reservations about the mp3 format, a recent decision to open  up the Dissident back catalogue in WAV format exclusively through Juno Download was met with golf claps by all. As a result Juno Plus writer Tony Poland decided to quiz Blake further on this, terrace funk and the future of Cave Paintings. We also coaxed out of him his top five Dissident releases.

Detachments – Holiday Romance review

by Juno Plus on 20.09.2010 at 09:46am

Having worked with some of the UKs foremost producers in Andy Weatherall, Trevor Jackson and Tim Goldworthy, there’s been an unerring sense of anticipation behind Detachments for some time. With a debut album produced entirely by SMD’s James Ford set for release next week, it looks like the band will finally deliver on this promise.

“Holiday Romance” is perhaps the most poppy track on a broody existential album that takes its musical cue from early 80s European Minimal Wave along with key UK bands such as Fad Gadget and Cabaret Voltaire, so it’s a perfect fit for lead single. Naturally ThisIsNotAnExit secure some brilliant remixes to complement the track, with Bitches Brew boss Cosmo shifting the sonic focus into an extended driving electro popper. Nice enough but it gets totally overshadowed by the colossal raw acid melt from Andy Blake. Clocking in at a monumental 17 mins 36 sec and delivered in one take, Blake’s remix is named in honour of the World Unknown parties he runs in Brixton. Remix of the year.
