Azari & III – Azari & III review

by Juno Plus on 25.08.2011 at 09:46am
Azari & III – Azari & III review
Artist: Azari & III
Title: Azari & III
Label: Loose Lips
Genre: Zeitgeist Capturing House Music
Format: CD, Digital

The hype around Toronto house outfit Azari & III has been steadily building a head of steam since two thrilling singles in appeared in 2009. In “Hungry For The Power” and “Reckless (With Your Love)”, the Canadian production duo of Alixander III and Dinamo Azari set their stall out as retro-futurists with one eye on the past and another on the present.

While there was little particularly fashionable about the impressive “Hungry For The Power” – a faintly threatening, bittersweet concoction that offered a bleak, almost dark take on early Inner City – “Reckless (With Your Love)” seemed to capture the zeitgeist perfectly. With its prominent pianos, sharp synth strings, turn-of-the-nineties house groove and sad-but-happy vocal, it was the sort of cultured escapism that had been sorely lacking in a house scene that was still suffering a prolonged hangover from the minimal techno era.

Given these credentials, which additionally seeped into an impressive amount of remixes, it’s perhaps no surprise that the hype surrounding Azari & III has remained on an upwards trajectory ever since. Listening to this long-promised self titled debut album – which sees numbers swell to a four piece with the addition of two enigmatic frontmen – it’s fair to report the hype and anticipation is well judged. For starters, Azari & III is unfussy, uncomplicated and unconcerned with high-minded concepts. While occasionally lyrically heartfelt and never less than sincere, this is an album concerned primarily with having a good time. Judged on this single criterion, it is nothing less than a triumph: this is good, old fashioned good time music for those who like their house heady and intoxicating.

That’s not to say it’s throwaway, though. It is impeccably produced and offers a zeitgeist-capturing take on house – the kind of knowing, contemporary revision of the late 80s/early 90s heyday of house and techno from Chicago, Detroit and New York – that should have serious longevity. Without wanting to sound too pompous, it sounds like a classic house album – and those are a rarity. The songs, in particular, are infectious. Their big dancefloor hits are joined by new, equally impressive forays into vocal territory; the tribal throb of “Lost In Time”, the half-whispered intensity of “Manhooker”, the claustrophobic new wave freak-out that is “Undecided” and the Kevin Saunderson-meets-Prince strut of “Manic”.

Then there are the forays into straight-up instrumental dancefloor territory, which invariably raise comparisons with such innovators as Virgo Four, Larry Heard and DJ Pierre – albeit blended with the sort of infectious piano riffs that used to be the preserve of David Morales (before he vanished into the pop-house ether) or Ten City (check the brilliant dark/light fusion that is “Indigo”). Yet for all these comparisons, Azari & III are no imitators – for all the classic house reference points (as well as nods to Italo disco, German electro and new wave pop), they have a fresh, floor-friendly sound all of their own.

Azari & III – Reckless With Your Remixes review

by Juno Plus on 19.08.2010 at 11:28am
Azari & III – Reckless With Your Remixes review
Artist: Azari & III
Title: Reckless With Your Remixes 1
Label: Permanent Vacation
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco
Format: 12"

The clamour and hype surrounding Tensnake’s remix of Azari & III’s “Reckless With Your Love” has surpassed the inner disco circle and spread as far and wide as Pitchfork and The Metro. That comes as no real surprise as both the remixer and remixee are certainly Premier League material. The liberal usage of C & C Music Factory splits audiences once the signature piano stabs are dropped in, but this remix alone is likely to secure Permanent Vacation one of their best selling 12 inches to date.

But yet, it’s not even the best remix on this record: that honour falls to Midnight Magic, who have already won many a heart via their debut single “Beam Me Up”. Employing a similar sound to that track, Midnight Magic’s remix has a vintage disco bump that submerged in cavernous echo, with the soaring string and horn arrangements laced over the chorus a true delight. Tuff City Kids aka Gerd Jansen and Phillip Lauer (Arto Mwambe/Brontosaurus) dispel with the vocal refrain and opt for some prime Muzic Box jack which brilliantly teases out an acid tinged variant on the original’s distinctive synth melody. The less than prolific German duo of Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt return from the wilderness with a brilliant burning deep house rework which rounds off a superlative remix package.

Runaway – The Fire Below (remixes)

Runaway – The Fire Below (remixes)
Artist: Runaway
Title: The Fire Below (remixes)
Label: On The Prowl
Genre: Disco/Nu-Disco, Deep House
Format: 12"

You have to take your hat off to Runaway – they’ve certainly been keeping themselves busy. Following hot on the heels of last month’s organ-riffic Broken Man 12” – a heavyweight chunk of NYC house that wouldn’t have sounded out of place booming out of the Sound Factory speakers during Junior Vasquez’s pomp – comes this impressive remix package. The original version of “The Fire Below” first emerged in December last year, backed by a Cosmo Vitelli remix of another Runaway track, “The Poltergeist”. While Vitelli’s remix got some props, it was “The Fire Below” that tickled most DJs’ fancy. Something of a slow burner, it fused the duo’s now famous tribal-influenced deep house beats with soft-centred piano chords, drawn-out builds and some delicious, starry-eyed synths.

This time round, they’ve asked current men-of-the-moment Azari & III and The Revenge – arguably the hardest working man in Scotland – to take care of the remixes. The former provide a trippy, late night version built around the original’s spiraling synth melodies and gratuitous use of FX. The beats are a touch more crisp than Runaway’s, but the effect is at times beguiling – hypnotic and understated in equal measure.

The Revenge, on the other hand, does his best to draw out the original’s retro-futurist leanings. His version is typically playable, fixing ultra-tweaked vocal hooks onto rock-solid beats and the sort of menacing bassline that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Belgian rave track circa 1992. Into the mix are thrown snippets of the original riff, echo-laden klaxon horns and all manner of subtle piano keys. It’s the winner here by some distance. As way of a bonus, digital buyers can get their hands on The Revenge’s ‘Bassline Dub’. Arguably even better than his exemplary remix, it strips the track down to little more than a booming old skool bassline, hurried percussion and the odd reverb-laden klaxon. As DJ tools go, it’s pretty darn handy. Matt Anniss

Interview: Cosmo Vitelli

by Juno Plus on 14.01.2010 at 13:42pm

Interview: Cosmo Vitelli

Cosmo Vitelli is a tastemaker extraordinaire (even if he’s reluctant to admit it). His boutique I’m a Cliché label has steadily built a devoted following in its first five years of existence, unleashing the likes of Yuksek, Simian Mobile Disco, Canyons, Azari & III and Runaway on the record buying public. On top of his work as a label chief, Vitelli continues to innovate and surprise with his own productions. The recent Blue Steel EP, released under the Bot’Ox moniker, was described by Juno Plus scribe Tony Poland as “that most difficult of achievements for electronic music producers – a finely crafted slice of three minute pop music”. With a Bot’Ox LP on the way in 2010, we spoke with Vitelli via email about running a label, why Paris is “annoying” and his potential career in A & R.
